There are a lot of Scandinavians in MN, but last I checked there are actually more Germans. That said, in my experience one has to travel west towards Jamestown, ND, to really start getting a feel for German heritage in food and culture. Although I'm not disagreeing with El as I'm sure there has been influence from many heritages to make the MN accent, I will say, having studied both Norwegian and German languages a tad, it felt surprisingly natural to pronounce the Norwegian words and not as natural to pronounce the German words I was learning, but it should be noted that I grew up in a very Norwegian county of MN. The older generations there sound a bit like the mom from Bobby's World.

I'm here because I didn't want to forget anything when I joke with my friends of our accent and sayings. I love it, it's hilarious and unique. But I tell ya, up there in the far North East coast. Their accent is similar and a little more stronger with the O's. Wisconsin and northern Illinois really drag out their vowels. Having lived in Puerto Rico now for like 15 years working in the service industry, its fun meeting customers and guessing where their from, from their accent. Uff da can be used as an expression of surprise, astonishment, exhaustion, relief and sometimes dismay. Within Scandinavian-American culture, Uff da frequently translates to: "I am overwhelmed", somewhat similar to the Yiddish phrase oy vey. Uff da can often be used as an alternative for many common obscenities.

Wisconsinite here. Of course you say “the ditch”. The ditch is the thing that runs alongside the highway. A ditch might be a hole in the lawn somewhere.
@lj.35894 жыл бұрын
Yeah, "the ditch" sounded fine to me. It is "the ditch that runs along the side of the road". Thus, I drove into the ditch. I think it's seen as a component of the road. There's the center, the lane, the shoulder, and the ditch to name a few basic parts. Makes total sense. One doesn't say, I pulled over onto A shoulder of the road. I pulled over onto THE shoulder. He crossed THE median. I went into the ditch in that area of the road where I hit black ice and lost traction.

I've lived in the Midwest my entire life; Wisconsin, Iowa, and now Minnesota for the last 5-6 years so i've heard plenty of Midwestern accents. I have no idea where the stereotype of Minnesotans saying "you betcha" comes from i've maybe heard it once or twice and that's it but every movie or tv show that has Minnesotans has the "you betcha". The only person i've ever heard really use that phrase is Sarah Palin. I've been lucky enough that despite my Midwest upbringing i've not picked up the Wisconsin/yooper accent or the Minnesota accent.

I just figured my family didnt eat them lol. I meet a lot of people from around the country and world and they look so confused when I say, "oh Im going to the cities" versus "the twin cities" or when I just say Mayo versus, "The Mayo Clinic". That's a good example of when we say uffda in Minnesota. Another way we use it is "Uffda, it's cold out." Or you almost spill a glass of water at the table you say "uffda", or you lift something you can say "uffda that was heavy." Or "Do you smell the lutefisk? Uffda. "
@joshuamclean89139 жыл бұрын
The term actually comes from Norwegian settlers, so it makes a lot of sense. During some time a lot of them moved to that region, I don't remember when.
@lj.35894 жыл бұрын
It's typically spelled "Uffda" here too. They are the same. There are various unofficial spellings though. I see "oofda" often too. Don't even get me started on Uffda tacos which, in their case, have nothing to do with Norway but are just another excuse to say "Uffda" in MN.

great last question :P most people I know, including myself, call them bobbles. But I so rarely hear that anywhere else!
@thriftthick11 жыл бұрын
Haha I feel like I hear bobbles from UK people all the time :p Here in the states though they're a completely different hair accessories… bobbles are the elastics with little plastic balls on the ends that little girls wear in their hair!

Yay I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Also happy that you answered one of my questions for me I seriously had no idea :) I can't believe people don't know what oofta means lol!!!! So strange since it's so second-hand nature to me... almost like if someone asked what "ouch" meant haha. Which is kindof how you would use oofta; it's a noise you would make if you were lifting something heavy, maybe if you were getting out of bed in the morning and were really tired sill, etc. An exasperated expression! :)

We say 'the ditch' too in Ireland! We come into contact with them a lot on our one car width country roads. There's actually a good few similarities. Long goodbyes, even on the phone, 'bye, g'bye, byebuhbyebyebuhbye'

Soda. Roly-poly is also called a potato bug I always called or known it as roly-poly. Nana and Grandad for grandparents. Hair ties. Moving to Grand Rapids soon from Cali. About is a perfect tag word for MN folks
@thriftthick11 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, that's crazy! We have bobbles here as well but they're a specific kind of hair tie that little girls wear with two plastic balls on the ends of the hair tie loops... they're pretty peculiar to describe but I think every little girl I knew (including myself!) growing up wore them!! :)
