There are a lot of Scandinavians in MN, but last I checked there are actually more Germans. That said, in my experience one has to travel west towards Jamestown, ND, to really start getting a feel for German heritage in food and culture. Although I'm not disagreeing with El as I'm sure there has been influence from many heritages to make the MN accent, I will say, having studied both Norwegian and German languages a tad, it felt surprisingly natural to pronounce the Norwegian words and not as natural to pronounce the German words I was learning, but it should be noted that I grew up in a very Norwegian county of MN. The older generations there sound a bit like the mom from Bobby's World.

I'm here because I didn't want to forget anything when I joke with my friends of our accent and sayings. I love it, it's hilarious and unique. But I tell ya, up there in the far North East coast. Their accent is similar and a little more stronger with the O's. Wisconsin and northern Illinois really drag out their vowels. Having lived in Puerto Rico now for like 15 years working in the service industry, its fun meeting customers and guessing where their from, from their accent. Uff da can be used as an expression of surprise, astonishment, exhaustion, relief and sometimes dismay. Within Scandinavian-American culture, Uff da frequently translates to: "I am overwhelmed", somewhat similar to the Yiddish phrase oy vey. Uff da can often be used as an alternative for many common obscenities.

When I went to the doctor in MN (NY native) I spent forever looking for some sort of gian asphalt ramp because I was told to park in the "parking ramp". After half an hour and several phone calls to the office I finally realized the receptionist was describing a parking garage. Looks like a building not like a ramp, granted there are ramps within the parking garage. LOL. Confusing to non-natives.

I think the MN accent is one of the most musical and beautiful the English-speaking world has. And I’m surprised to hear that it’s so much like how we talk in the NW of England! We say “daddy long legs” and “pop”...or “fizzy pop”! And our vowels are very similar. Don’t alter your accent to adapt to anyone. It’s gorgeous. And we say “bobble” for your “hair elastic”...why?!

So strange since it's so second-hand nature to me... almost like if someone asked what "ouch" meant haha. Which is kindof how you would use oofta; it's a noise you would make if you were lifting something heavy, maybe if you were getting out of bed in the morning and were really tired sill, etc. An exasperated expression! :)

I'm strongly Minnesotan people mistake me for being canadian and Canadians think im Canadian. it all matters where your from and how strong your family heritage is. Other minnesotans say i have a accent its just how i was raised and what part of minnesota im from. i grew up in a small town there was only one black guy in my school that was it. rest were white so not a lot of diversity if you grow up in the cities or around it theres a chance you picked up other ways to talk. Im the perfect stereotype minnesotan how i talk what i say my attitude towards other people is spot on.

I've lived in the Midwest my entire life; Wisconsin, Iowa, and now Minnesota for the last 5-6 years so i've heard plenty of Midwestern accents. I have no idea where the stereotype of Minnesotans saying "you betcha" comes from i've maybe heard it once or twice and that's it but every movie or tv show that has Minnesotans has the "you betcha". The only person i've ever heard really use that phrase is Sarah Palin. I've been lucky enough that despite my Midwest upbringing i've not picked up the Wisconsin/yooper accent or the Minnesota accent.
@thriftthick
@thriftthick 10 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah I feel like the whole "you betcha" thing comes from living very far up north… at least that's where I got it (from my family who grew up there) and know of people saying it. It's not a common thing but it definitely comes out from time to time :)

Thrift Thick I loved this tag! I'm actually from Grand Forks, ND but for now I live in East Grand Forks, MN "sister city". Like, "Before homecoming, my house got rolled." When it rains while the sun is shining, we've always said "the devil is beating his wife." NO clue where that came from lol. I love Minnesotan accents! I loved this video! It's great hearing accents from around the country and the world. It's strange because I'm from Denver and I've heard countless people say that Denver is the land of "no accent." I try and refute that, but I really can't. I mean I know it's hard to do since you grow up with your way of speaking and can't discern what exactly you say differently. I guess it's just Standard American English? Haha! The only thing I've noticed we say differently here is some of our A's. Like I can tell if someone isn't from Colorado if they say Colo-raaaaah-do. We say it more nasal like Colo-rad-o. Anyway, loved the video! Stay cool! :-D

@lj.3589
@lj.3589 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, "the ditch" sounded fine to me. It is "the ditch that runs along the side of the road". Thus, I drove into the ditch. I think it's seen as a component of the road. There's the center, the lane, the shoulder, and the ditch to name a few basic parts. Makes total sense. One doesn't say, I pulled over onto A shoulder of the road. I pulled over onto THE shoulder. He crossed THE median. I went into the ditch in that area of the road where I hit black ice and lost traction.

When I heard the phrase "car park" and/or "parking ramp", I literally said "what the serious fuck are those." Then I proceeded to research those phrases and found out she meant a parking lot. A "car park" at least makes some sense, but a parking ramp? People don't park on ramps, they park on flat surfaces (unless in a mall garage).

Fellow Minnesotan here! I can them ponytails. Like, "hey do you have an extra ponytail?" Or to a child I'd say, "do you need a pony?" Also one that I say ALL THE TIME is, "ope just guna sneak right past ya" i didnt know this was a think until recent. Also, i didnt know hotdish and casserole are the same thing. I just figured my family didnt eat them lol. I meet a lot of people from around the country and world and they look so confused when I say, "oh Im going to the cities" versus "the twin cities" or when I just say Mayo versus, "The Mayo Clinic". If youre from the area, you just say, "my friend works at Mayo"

Oh interesting. I call the actual hair in the holder a pony tail unless there are two, then they're pigtails. But the actual elastics that holds the hair I call ponytail holders or hair ties. I start many sentences with "Oh" and yes, when I'm being careful or tip toeing around something I might start out the sentence with "ope".

I've heard it called a "grand-daddy long legs," though I'm not sure if that's actually the same sort of spider. As for "sunshowers," in Arkansas/Oklahoma, we'd probably just call that "rain" (and probably a sign that it's about to get miserably hot and muggy). I haven't had long hair in so long that I'm scratching my head to remember what I called those things, but I think it was a "ponytail holder." I enjoyed your video. You have striking eyes and a cool accent. :)

Oofta, sounds like the Nprwegian 'uffda :) Uffda means, for an example: when someone falls of their bike (unless it is serious) and hit their - well, knee - (again not an serious injury or anything) you can say - uffda, are you okay? Not sure if the word, Oofta, means the same, but it would be interesting to know! :)
@thriftthick
@thriftthick 9 жыл бұрын
Yup it's pretty much the exact same thing here!! Or you can use it in instances like if you lift something heavy, when you're struggling to pick/lift it up and then finally do you exclaim "oofta!" :)

That's a good example of when we say uffda in Minnesota. Another way we use it is "Uffda, it's cold out." Or you almost spill a glass of water at the table you say "uffda", or you lift something you can say "uffda that was heavy." Or "Do you smell the lutefisk? Uffda. "

The term actually comes from Norwegian settlers, so it makes a lot of sense. During some time a lot of them moved to that region, I don't remember when.
@lj.3589
@lj.3589 4 жыл бұрын
It's typically spelled "Uffda" here too. They are the same. There are various unofficial spellings though. I see "oofda" often too. Don't even get me started on Uffda tacos which, in their case, have nothing to do with Norway but are just another excuse to say "Uffda" in MN.

I'm late to the comments because I'm a new subbie, but I had to say I love hearing your accent. You can certainly hear the Scandinavian influence in Minnesotans' speech. I'm in Arkansas, and your accent would definitely be noticed here! I'm shocked to hear that you use "our" word- y'all. I guess it's taking over the US because I've heard West Coasters use it too. Yayyyyy I'm so glad Minnesota isn't the only place that says "the ditch"!! :D It really must be the small-town-country-bumpkin in us hahah. I also didn't know that people didn't call sun showers.... well, sun showers! Very different from raining/sprinkling since both of those are times when the sky is overcast or very cloudy... though that's just me being pretentious lol. And yes, hair bows that one also weirds me out! So strange since you don't tie them in a bow unless you're using ribbon :)
