That's awesome, you've experienced the benefits of why light rail pisses all over buses. I've followed the arguments against light rail in Canberra for a while, people are whinging it costs too much and they should use buses instead but this video shows why light rail is better. There's no traffic to get caught in unlike buses on Northbourne Avenue and the experience is so much better! I've heard the same complaints up here in QLD about the Gold Coast light rail and it's been a phenomenal success, they're now planning the stage 3 extension.

Thanks for this. It's a great real time experience. I want to go to Canberra just to have a ride in this. It's been a long time coming. It felt like the missing element to Canberra's streets. They were designed for this. Now they need to get on with the other stages. They could continue the line across Commonwealth Bridge and down to Woden and Tuggeranong. Some adjustment is needed on that "Doors Closing" sign. Of all of the announcer voices, my preference is for the mature female voice. The squeaky, high pitched voice doesn't do it for me. The etched glass barriers look like the glass has been shattered. Not attractive and not functional as it obscures the view too much.

I wonder why so many Australian tram systems have this exact model of tram (Urbos 3) In a very similar shade of red. Look at Sydney's trams and Newcastle's trams! P.S This tramway looks great, and I saw on the news that businesses are already moving in as a result!
@abdulkareemh5 жыл бұрын
That red and white is very Deutsche Bahn colour... these rakes could also sit well in Toronto ;-)
@mrmoomooface16625 жыл бұрын
@@abdulkareemh I think Ottawa's metro is like that too, but that's probably because those are the colours of Canada's flag. I don't know why Australia's trams have so much red.
@sgbuses5 жыл бұрын
To be fair...the Canberra light rail is indeed operated by Deutsche Bahn!
@c.d.c94255 жыл бұрын
It could be down to the fact that Sydney and Newcastle's tram systems are operated by the same state government, where all trams are branded under the same red theme. Canberra's a slightly different story but I'm gonna guess that their transport infrastructure is influenced somewhat by NSW's with their location, hence why they may be in the same shade of red (ie. lower costs for liveries)

CAF is very competitive on price, particularly for their Urbos 3/100 trams. They are basically the same tram as used in Birmingham AND Edinburgh in the UK.

@@PCLoadLetter i dont live in Canberra so dont know how much traffic congestion there is in peak periods, obviously much, much less compared to light rail routes in melbourne and sydney. Light rail is most beneficial around populated areas with high dense traffic. they are planning obviously for the future with this project, your comment makes me think it was not needed at this point in time and buses would have been adequate for a period.

as you would expect a lot of similarities with the sydney light rail - vehicle, the font on station names and the emergency help point looks to be identical to the sign in sydney. the various accents is nice although the young girl voice as mentioned could be annoying over time. its a good time for canberrans and you can see the spirit with the various staff on the stations in happy mood.

They had this debate before. Officially it's called light rail in Australia except Melbourne, but the distinction isn't great here.
@tacitdionysus32205 жыл бұрын
If its mainly running on a road it's a tram. if it's mainly running in its own right of way, it's light rail. Looks like a right of way up a parkway between two sides of a road. That's light rail.
@lukei62555 жыл бұрын
@@tacitdionysus3220 where did you get that info from? It's tram - in Europe light rail is used to call a transportation mode that is neither suburban train nor tram. Different design. Often with varying standing and seating levels, able to reach 90km/h. As the stops are also less often than for the tram.
@tacitdionysus32205 жыл бұрын
@@lukei6255 Hi Luke. That would be consistent with what I stated as the (mostly) segregated running is associated with fewer stops, larger vehicles and higher speeds than mostly on street trams. To me it is more a spectrum of differentiating light rail not only from trams but from heavy rail (and dedicated busways for that matter). Some sources I am aware of that cite the segregated running differentiation include Wiki (light rail), humantransit.org , lrta.org, and thetrams.co.uk . The last shows such a spectrum diagram. Sydney once had one of the world's largest tram systems but dismantled it in the 60s. Therefore the term 'light rail' tends to be used politically in some parts of Australia to distinguish new proposals from 'old fashioned' trams. New light rail systems in Australia include in Sydney, the Gold Coast, Newcastle and Canberra. Melbourne (and to a lesser extent Adelaide) on the other hand retained and modernised old tram systems and are very proud of them as a distinguishing feature of the city. I've not heard of Melburnians referring to it as 'light rail', even though parts of it have their own right of way, as 'trams' is a positive (or at least neutral) marketing term there. Australia is not a part of Europe so, (like it or not), Sydney, Gold Coast, Newcastle and Canberra call their systems 'light rail' and Melbourne and Adelaide call theirs 'trams'. We are not part of the EU (thankfully) and none of us would care less if some euro-definition disagrees.
