"We are never less authentic than when we're trying to be real, and we're never more real than when we're embracing our inauthenticity." A properly dialectical conclusion, thanks as always Julian!

When I am Alone, I always push myself to imagine there is an imaginary person to whom I have to perform. When this imaginary person exists, life improves because I feel a better version of myself. When I am with others, that I know of, I try to be less authentic as possible because the idea of authencity feels precisly fake. Calling authenticity a way of fascism was a wake up call for being fascist towards myself. 🤣 anyway, always a great pleasure to listen to your lecture. And congratilations Brazil.

That was incredibly thorough provoking! I am now thinking about, if having Makeup on makes you more or less authentic. You could argue that it is a façade you are portraying, but on the other hand you could argue that actively not wearing makeup, to show your “authenticity”, could also be used to hide your true motive.

Another very enjoyable talk! Personally, I find Byung Chul Han with Psychopolitics and Burnout Society interesting to point out here in this context. To me, and I think to Han, the main criticism is that the processes that are being described are indeed symptomatic as you describe but that there is STILL something pathological in the phenomenon in ways that I don't think were discussed. In other words, this analysis, while excellent, sort of sidesteps the uniquely outsized effect that utilizing technology in the manner and for the ends that we do has on our affect.

Fascinating discussion. Through the Buddhist lens, "Authenticity" is a pretty extreme form of delusion. After all, there is no fixed Self or thing that is truly unchangingly "You" underneath the ever-changing phenomena of your material body, senses, cognitions, etc. The belief that there is a "True Self" only leads to further suffering and alienation from the world around you.

Ok. I like the idea of embracing Inauthenticity but this leads to the question: If everything is a mask what should we do? Even if everything is a mask we can't escape the fact that in our world these masks are fighting against each other on who gets the upper hand. And what are these masks supposed to be anyway? Ways of living like hedonism or asketism? Different branches of a culture like catholizism or protestantism? Schools of thought like the Enlightenment or Irrationalism? Political positions like left or right or different social classes like worker and capitalist? If everything is a mask by which standard do we measure what to do? Waht is human progress? What is beautiful? How should we live together and so on and son?

@@Steini9900 yes, the movie is great. The book also , and it is mentioned in the movie. They are different versions of the same. The idea of looking for and when you stop Chasing the mirage ( an illusion) that is when you truly find love. Great metaphors. And finally there is this artwotk by tacita Dean the green Ray. An inspiring art piece.

Idea of performed authenticity and how this plays with the working class people: they are honest, intuitive. But isn't this honesty + intuition the basis of psychological, rather than ideological, authenticity? Being real surely is being upfront and transparent. Rather than a simulacra of honesty, a mask of authenticity. Or perhaps we are kinda talking about semantics around 'authenticity'? I'm very curious 🙏
