This is a *pitch perfect* intro to act 2. The final barracks scene with Pyle is just so nightmarish, Kubrick obviously knew he needed an immediate pick-me-up after all that grimness.

@@gregbors8364 100% When we were kids, my neighbor and I used to watch the first half because that was the “crazy part with all the cool swearing”. As an adult, I can’t really do that anymore. They still feel like separate halves but this scene is a perfect reset that launches you right into act 2

@@gregbors8364 actually, it is a second part, indeed - the original novel, "The Short-Timers", by Gustav Hasford, is divided into three separate parts - and movie script uses first part as a basis for the training camp story, and scenes from the 2nd and 3rd for the rest of the plot.

Low kicks are very useful and very commonly used both in and out of professional fights very obvious reasons.

Funny thing is, this is still an ordinary day in Vietnam. If you walk around with an expensive camera, it's very that you'll get robbed. I saw a lot of vloggers robbed in Vietnam. @@Geckotr I agree. I was in Montreal Canada once - walking around with my wife. It was daytime and I had my camera. We walked down a secondary street that wasn't busy. I noticed (using reflections in glass windows as I passed) a guy had made me his mark and was closing in behind us. I wrapped my camera strap tightly around my fist and brought the camera in close. I told my wife we were being followed and to walk up ahead of me. I quickly looked over my shoulder and he stopped suddenly and acted like he was interested in something. I was waiting for him to try to grab it so I could use his momentum to smash him in the face with my free fist, or smash him in his face with the camera if he wanted my wallet. When we got to the corner there were more people there. He was still behind me. I quickly spun around and looked him right in the eye. He was startled and turned right around and high tailed it into the McDonald's right there on the corner... creepy. He must have seen how I was carrying the camera, but he wanted it or my wallet, but for some reason he never made the "spring"... I think he was new at it. A short while later we were in a small park. Some crazy guy was screaming obscenities at nobody. We decided to leave. I never had any issues in Toronto. Anyway... like you said... poverty often leads to crime.

To this day, I can’t believe R. Lee Ermey didn’t get an Oscar nom for his performance. He set the platinum standard for deranged but fair military drill personnel. His performance has been copied, lampooned and parodied over the years. Hell, Ermey himself, parodied his own performance several times including the Toy Story Movies and in an uncredited and unseen role in X-Men 3. And to think…. He was only hired as a consultant. He had to make a video of him in character on his own dime to impress Kubrick

It seems mad that Kubrick made all of his films from the 60's onwards in England, near his home. You wouldn't think you could make the English landscape pass for Vietnam yet if you didn't know it wasn't actually there you'd never suspect otherwise. Fun fact - I lived 5 mins down the road from Kubrick, near his mansion in Childwickbury where his widow Christiane still lives. It's on the very edge of St. Albans as you drive onwards to Harpenden. Back in the 90's shortly before Eyes Wide Shut my brother worked in a pub (now a Thai restaurant) in the town called the Tudor Tavern. On the Sunday evenings, Kubrick would sit alone at a table near the end of the bar for a couple of hours. Kept himself to himself but was always really polite when getting a drink. Nobody in the pub had any idea who he was apart from my brother who was a fan but never said a word to anyone or to Kubrick himself that he knew so that it didn't put him off coming in. He eventually stopped his Sunday night visits once filming for Eyes Wide Shut started and of course sadly passed away before the final cut had been edited.

Yes - in fact the area around the Tet Offensive was so bombed-out that there was no location anywhere in Southeast Asia that looked like that any more - by getting permission to partially destroy a British complex of buildings slated for demolition, Kubrick was able to recreate it almost exactly.

@@jossym Right. What I love is that Kubrick (who started out as a still photographer) has such an advanced understanding of film, lenses and cameras that he knows exactly how to make things look real - the front-projection system for the prehistoric Africa sequences in 2001; oil smoke, salt and styrofoam for the snow in The Shining; the Gas Works for Hué. People object on principle - "That's absurd, you can't make Borehamwood, England look like Colorado or Africa or Vietnam" - rather than using their eyes and realizing that he pulls it off perfectly every time.

TRUE STORY: I loved this movie from the first frame on. I attended Marine Military Academy during my three school years 1976 thru graduation in 1979, and it saved my life. Later on when Tipper Gore went Full Retard on 2 Live Crew for, among other things, their song "Me So Horny," the title taken from this scene in Full Metal Jacket, the phrase stuck in my head for years. Then in the early 2000's I became seriously involved in both Japanese and Korean cuisine, especially Kimchi and soups. So when I created a truly delicious Miso soup that by complete happenstance turned out to be Tawny in color, I had no other choice than to name it "Miso Tawny." I absolutely LOVE it when only a couple of people at the table get the joke, and all the others look all around trying to figure out what's so effing funny.

Papillon Soo was born in 1961 in England, UK. She is an actress, known for Full Metal Jacket (1987), A View to a Kill (1985) and Split Second (1992). Actress who says "Me So Horny" from Full Metal Jacket Papillon means "butterfly" in the French language. Her parents are French and Chinese. She is a former law student who turned to modeling. 2 Live Crew wrote a song sampling her voice/famous line from Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, and in fact named the song after the line of dialogue, that has since become iconic. As a prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, about the Vietnam War, her line "Me So Horny" has become legendary, especially after it was used in a rap song.
