This is my "Full Moon Silhouettes" short, as seen originally on Vimeo. It is a real time video of the moon rising over the Mount Victoria Lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. People had gathered up there this night to get the best view possible of the moon rising. I captured the video from 2.1km away on the other side of the city. It's something that I've been wanting to photograph for a long time now, and a lot of planning and failed attempts had taken place. Finally, during moon rise on the 28th January 2013, everything fell into place and I got my footage.
The video is as it came off the memory card and there has been no manipulation whatsoever. Technically it was quite a challenge to get the final result. I shot it on a Canon ID MkIV in video mode with a Canon EF 500mm f/4L and a Canon 2x extender II, giving me the equivalent focal length of 1300mm.

I always picture the first two people you see walking up as my wife and I. It's what we do together. You can see she is wearing her Jacket and walking with her hands stuck in her pockets like my wife would . The music is Beautiful , Melodic, and slightly sad. I've watch this many times, maybe 20 plus. My wife passed away in October of 2009 from Cancer at the age of 49 but this lets me Dream. ..........Well, it's been 4 years since I posted. I've watched it to many times to count. I still can't stop staring at her silhouette and tearing with the memories we had together. 143 my sunshine. 143 are the letters in I LOVE YOU. a little loving code we would send at random times to let each other know we are thinking about each other.

Matt...... She is there waiting for you !! You shall walk again together for all eternity !! The pain of loneliness is but a temporary thing. The joy of your reunion with her and Our Lord Jesus cannot be described in our earthly words. A prayer this day, will I say for you and her!! God Bless!!

The silhouettes look close to us. I’m 6 foot and she’s 5’3 .;She had beautiful long red hair that sparkled in the Sun. The only thing brighter was her smile when it was aimed at me. She passed away from Pancreatic Cancer just 2 days shy of our 25th Anniversary . She was the only woman I have ever, or wanted to kiss. That makes an Incredible bond. Thank you for your prayers Dennis

Well, I almost never post comments, but here goes. I'm a 40-year professional photographer, an amateur astronomer, and an artist, so I know the technical difficulty of getting this shot, and I connect with the aesthetic "need" to make something that communicates the joy and reward of a moonrise. I've been re-running this piece for about a month now, and am hooked on it. It buoys my mood every time I watch it. Thanks for an inspiring work of art. (dead-on choice of music, too)

I commented on the blog too and I'll not shy away from saying here that this is one of the most inspiring piece of art of our times. While the world is busy seeking help of virtual technology to beautify and enhance visual experience, one man with his skills and dedication captures nature's beauty for all of us to experience which we all manage to miss every single day, rather night. Thanks, Mark. Glad that you not only have a kickass camera but also a vision.

As Gary Player once said, "the more I practice, the luckier I get". Everything about this is simply stunning; composition, the blackness, colour of the moon, speed of the moon, track of the moon, people moving almost as if on cue, with a great choice of music too.

I completely understand what you mean. The best shot is the coming together of the right equipment, best lighting and - most importantly - OPPORTUNITY. I am so glad it all finally came together for you. Awesome video! The best I've seen on KZbin of the moon - by far. Gives me something to shoot for in my quest to get the best shot of the moon.

The ripples you are noticing is atmospheric refraction, I've got a bit of info on that in my blog. The focus was set manually to infinity, so both the people and moon is in focus, but the moon looks soft and out of focus due to it being low to the horizon and effected by the earth's atmosphere.

When i looking this video.. It has recall my memory when i was a child which is in year 1999. I still remember on that time, i saw something wierd behind Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. It just like a bright light same like sunlight. Then, the moon slowly rised up to the sky. Once it rised up to the sky, that moon lights becoming more brightly untill to the top of Mount Kinabalu peak.

Hi Amy - I started in photography at school, and went on from there. I did study, but not really photography/filming so most of what I know there is self taught. It's great you are reading up on photography on the web - there are some great resources there, but with knowledge you need to practice, which is pretty much what it's all about. I have learnt so much this way and still learning today. My biggest tip is just to go out there and shoot as much as you can and learn from your mistakes :)

Hi Charles, and that is a good question which I had to research a little. From comparing the image of the video at moon rise, and a image I took of moon set a few days before, it does rotate, but only looks like it rotates around 45 degrees in the anti-clockwise direction. So no you still don't see the "Man in the Moon" face upright at moon set in the southern hemisphere.

This is mainly due to chromatic aberration, which is an artefact from the failure of the lens on the camera focusing all colors to the same convergence point. It's quite common in photography and probably worth googling it if you want more details.
