Italian here, I wanted to add some fun facts about the five teams representing my country. 1) Inter Milan had a troubled past due to its name, back in Fascist Italy. Having a team named "Internazionale" made it sound too Communist for the government, so they had to change their name into Ambrosiana (after Saint Ambrose, the Patron Saint of Milan). They even had to adopt a more Fascist logo (which is reminiscent to how Bayern Munich had to adopt Nazi symbols during WW2). However, fans were still calling it Inter, so it was still called Ambrosiana-Inter 2) Due to its connection to Greek Mythology, Atalanta is nicknamed "La Dea", The Goddess. They also hold the record for the farthest a team made it in a European competition while playing in the 2nd division in their country. Back in 1987, they were relegated to Serie B, but, since they made it to the Coppa Italia final (which they lost against Maradona's Napoli), they got to be in the Cup Winners' Cup, and made it to the semi-finals 3) Juventus has its name because the founders wanted to highlight just how young they were. Rivals started mockingly saying that they weren't youngsters, but an old lady, and that's how Juventus became "The Old Lady" 4) AC Milan once did try to use this name to become a multi-sport brand. In the 90s, they acquired many sports teams in Milan, and named them "Athletic Club Milan" to keep the name as AC Milan. It was short lived, but every team won its fair share of trophies 5) Bologna has a curious story. Between the World Wars, it was seen as an actual footballing powerhouse, to the point of being known as "La Squadra che Tremare il Mondo fa" (the team that makes the World tremble) I loved this video, and thanks for covering up all teams

Hi NIDELLANEUM, and thank you so much for sharing even more insight! I am not sure if you have watched my videos before - previous years I only said the names but wanted to get into the history this year. If I do this again in the future, I definitely will integrate your notes!! Anything you have to add about the Italian clubs in Europa or Conference? I can add it to what I am working on for Roma / Lazio / Fiorentina. I appreciate you not criticizing my (very beginner level) Italian pronunciation as well 😄 Graze mille 👏

@@jackgrimse I admit this is the video that made me discover you, so I'll check out on the others. As for the other teams, well, I do. 1) AS Roma. Have you ever noticed how SS Lazio, the older of the two teams in Rome, was founded 27 years before Roma (1900 VS 1927) yet it's the *newer* one that bears the name of the city? I mean, why couldn't Lazio take dibs on being named after Rome, instead of using the name of the region? Well, that is because Roma was created by the merger of many teams from the Eternal City, and some of them are actually older than Lazio. It's similar to how Juventus' local rivals, Torino, bear the name of the city even though the team is newer: they come from a merger of older teams; 2) SS Lazio. It is actually a multi-sport association (which is why it's called Società Sportiva, Sporting Society), with multiple division. A curious case is that, for their swimming division, they also fielded western legend Bud Spencer, who was a trained athlete before becoming an actor; 3) AC Fiorentina: the reason why the main team from Florence wears purple is that, like Roma, it comes from a merger. One team wore white and red, the other wore blue, so they came together by becoming purple. By the way, Roma and Fiorentina's mergers are connected. In the 1920s, Italian football was pretty much one sided: only teams from Piemonte, Lombardia and Liguria won titles (like Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Genoa and other "fallen giants"). Thus, in an effort to make other big cities around central and southern Italy competitive, some mergers took place. Roma, Fiorentina and Napoli were all born this way, and they did end up becoming quite competitive, over the next century. Hope it can help, and good luck with the video

Regarding name changes of Austrian teams: it is allowed and very common for teams to change names for their sponsor - Wüstenrot is an insurance company based in Salzburg, and Casinos is the national Casino monopoly basically. Sturm Graz was for a while called Puntigamer Sturm Graz after the brewery in Puntigam on the outskirts of Graz. Have to say great pronounciation for someone who doesn't speak the languages!
@jackgrimseАй бұрын
Thank you Jimmy! I studied German for 4 years in school and spent 6 months in Berlin which helped a fair bit. I actually have a Casino Salzburg 90s jersey, it is one of my favorites in the collection! Very interesting to see how the sponsor is folded into the name. Kind of similar to a lot of stadiums, especially in American sports. Appreciate you watching and sharing some knowledge! 🙌

man your german pronuciation was exceptionally good. btw rb leipzig is only called rasenballsport bc in germany clubs can NORMALLY (see Leverkusen) not be named after companies, so they had to use sth that also stands for RB
@jackgrimseАй бұрын
Thank you!! Yeah the RB one is so interesting. I visited both Leverkusen and Leipzig this spring and still have a lot of content to work on from RB!
@philw6056Ай бұрын
@@jackgrimse Many german fans call them "Rasenball" to acknowledge their status as a normal club.

1:56 That's actually the logo of the current version of Paris FC, which was founded in 1972 And yeah I don't like when people say Stade Brest to talk about the club. It's not the name and it makes no sense. Just say Brest, Stade Brestois or SB 29. Pretty good video overall

Fun fact about Slovan: Back in commies era, one of the previous full names was Športový klub Slovan Chemické závody Juraja Dimitrova Bratislava, "shortened" to ŠK Slovan CHZJD Bratislava. While Slovan means Slav (not slave!), Chemické závody Juraja Dimitrova means "Chemical plants of Georgi Dimitrov", Bulgarian communist leader. Idk why they choose Bulgarian instead of Slovak or at least Czech personality but it was, what it was. Try to pronounce that, lol. 😂
