You know I think about the stuff the African Americans go through in this country and I have determined yes black children need to know their history but white children need to know our history even more! Because they are being lied to they don't know our contributions and especially they don't know what we go through on a daily basis they are the ones that need to learn about our contributions to this country as much as we need to learn about our contributions to this country it's not what the Republicans try to make it out to be you know make them feel bad about themselves it's not that at all

@@davidshareefChTPhD that is exactly the purpose of 1619 - shame whites into feeling bad about themselves. I have no problem learning history and in fact I find it enjoyable. But 1619 is a unique phenomenon that is only found in the Industrialzed West . That phenomenon is a revolution to dismantle the foundation myths and traditions of the culture in order for it to be replaced. This is very different from objectively learning history. These are political objectives that are carried out under the guise of learning true history. Unfortunately many have and will be deceived by Jones and others of her ilk. If we want to discuss the Trans Atlantic trade and the settling of this country let's do objectively without political agendas. History is a written and sometimes oral record of the past. It has been said that history is written by the winners. That is generally true. Jones and 1619 is an attempt to rewrite that history as part of a cultural revolution.

She is brilliant to say the least. She read those questions like books and pointed out the biases in even the smallest of phrases used to question her information. Many Americans wouldn't catch on to half of his suggestive wording which, on it's own, harbors a separation of parents by race. I perceived absolutely no malice on his end, yet he was devicive in speech. I think this is a great example of why banning books and writing history from a single perspective is leading us towards authoritarianism. Many of the regressive laws we see passing today seem to be television fodder to distract from the big picture which is that America can afford billions on a whim to a country on the other side of the planet, yet even the chosen Democrat of the DNC refuses to truly address the inequities of his own country.. Listen, we know republican representatives are going to be willing to end the world to stay in power. You would too if you had to lie, cheat and steal to pervail amongst liars, cheaters and thieves. Their role will not change. Bernie would have created that polar opposite position. A man who walked with King is not only still alive, but offered the rest of his life to equality and we let the news quiet his fight, This station was no different. I can only attribute this to your collective lack of multiple historical perspectives.

"So, the question becomes why they don't want their children to learn about true history of this land?" Which is the typical liberal retort. I wonder if the modern American liberal is a troll, obtuse, or just bad with English. The slave trade, racism, MLK Jr, Jim Crow, and related topics are taught in today's schools. No one has a problem with that. When CRT is taught, some people are objecting to it, explaining explicitly why, and the modern American left goes "why don't you want kids learning history?" Not just this topic... EVERY topic. Tell a modern American liberal "I'm against illegial immigrantion," and they will oftne reply with "Why do you hate immigrants?" or "We are all immigrants!" The interviewer could have been better prepared going up against a power house like Nicole Hannah-Jones replete with enough intellectual fortitude to redress some of his questions which at times came off as clumsy and ill conceived...I was glad for this because it proffered me the opportunity to learn even more about misconceptions & American historical thought patterns...which is certainly open for discussion..to that end, I believe that DISCUSSIONS are imperative in extant & in posterity in our country.

If you want to standardize what is taught about slavery, it will happen. They do it anyway. They teach American History and break it up in high school at 1877... it's history up to 1877 and then history after that, as I remember it. They have Social Studies and other classes before that... and they could discuss slavery and all that goes with it in a thoughtful way if they wanted to. It's 244 years of history. It's consequential because it's the majority of the history.... but it's also a continuum to it in that legal segregation followed for another 100 years, and even to this late day, the behaviors and practices are still observed. It's not like all of the very racist people all died at the end of each of these eras. The teachers can find ways to standardize how these things are taught. I mean, it's not like we can't memorize dates. We know 1607, 1620, 1676 (Bacon's Rebellion), 1770, 1773, 1776, 1783, 1812, 1850, 1861, 1863, 1865, 1877, 1895, etc. We can memorize what we want to. We can talk about eras, we can talk about dates, we can look at all of the subjects we currently care about but with additional information on how this actually affects everyone, or look at the new subjects that will and must arise to understand the country as it is today. Chuck asking about children age starts.... and not feeling guilty.... that sh*t is always funny. I'm sorry, have you heard of the doll test? Black kids are already subjected to racism through media, everyday... that's why the doll test is what it is. We don't get to protect them, which is nothing new.... but as always, we need to protect white kids. Protect them from their own ancestors' past. How ironic. You want to teach them about Washington to blindly be patriotic, but not to teach them about how he was able to become rich and become president. That was because of slavery. Jefferson and all the rest of them. It isn't to disparage them, but to show who they really were, and show that they were not these perfect figures, these almost mythical people "the Founders". The Founding Deadbeat Fathers, if you want to be honest, in that they ignored the pain of their black sons and daughters, literally and figuratively. This said, I don't think anybody is suggesting to teach white 6-year-olds that they have white privilege that came from slavery. I think it makes sense if you're teaching children about history of America, that this is when you start teaching them about what was here and why. If they are old enough to understand history, then they are old enough to know some of the bad parts of it, too. It's very curious to see a white person complain about kids learning real history.... but not just that, I think it says a lot that they don't want kids to know right from wrong, or be able to judge good and bad behavior. It might actually have them because decent adults. Have them question whether slavery was good or bad. It certainly is clear that people did not have to be slaves in order to come to America nor was it ever a good thing or necessary to have formed such a country. It wasn't. It could've been a bunch of hardworking white people who built it, but it wasn't. By the way, stop looking for the endpoint. How do we get over this hump? Why is that the question? Why aren't you talking to these racist governors who ban books and bother folks who want to improve education by digging into this history? It's not for Nikole to explain how white people can fix themselves. Why don't you have the answer? Why have you not had to think about the answer by this time, even yet?

Hannah-Jones is brilliant. She says professional teachers are best equipped to teach American history, and she is right. As a high school history teacher your job is to tell all of America's story--and that includes Indigenous peoples and African Americans, from the very beginning; other groups as we drove into their territories, such as Hispanics; and immigrants from around the globe, including Asian-Americans. Women's history is everyone's history, too. Did you know that the first women to be "sold" as brides in America came on that first ship with Africans for sale in 1619? They were auctioned off just like the slaves, to pay their passage, by becoming wives or indentured servants. It's a big responsibility to show students a fuller picture of America. Yet virtually all of my students became prouder of their country after their year of American History, not ashamed of it. They discovered that even when America hasn't lived up to Jefferson's statement that all men are created equal. we continually strive, even with setbacks, toward this founding ideal. America's is an ongoing story, one of great hope, as my students were allowed to discover for themselves. That's why you need real history teachers to teach and design the curriculum. And don't get me started on trying to cover all of American History in just two classes, all that most high schools require.

I think the bit that confuses me is I’m pretty sure I was taught in my public high school that slavery was not only a part of the US during the signing of the declaration but that the signers of the declaration did so *knowing* about the obvious contradiction between the declaration and slavery. After all… I always remember the scene from the movie 1776… “molasses to rum to slaves”, which we talked about. I graduated in 1984, and I’m sure my teacher taught us this in junior year US history in 1982-1983. I’m not seeing what’s new here? Not so. First, there is no "antifa" as an organized movement. It's just an epithet directed at certain people. Any more than all conservatives are Birchers or Nazis. Second, BLM has done nothing to deserve any push back or accusations of hypocrisy. Name a single BLM person who has been arrested and accused of destruction of public property or worse. Please.

She’s a journalist and Not An EXPERT in Education. Why should anyone listen to her about educating other peoples children. This forum Meet The Press is a minuscule of its former version. Chuck isn’t ( never was ) qualified to be the face of this program. It’s proper name should be We’re The Liberal Press, that he’s qualified for. If people weren't being so nosey in the affairs of others and clearly each person's business is their own, we need to remember being observed without consent of a person in a private setting in their own home is illegal, and worse to have an opinion about that person your sitting illegally judging without their knowledge for lawsuits, violation of due process, violation of rights.

@@thesacredibis6723 When this country breaks apart, and it will, remember all the accolades that laid the foundation for the fall of the US. No group can survive when 1/2 it's members seem to loathe it. The 1619 project is not about history, it's about idealogy. It's no different than Howard's Zinn's work. It's basically a holy document for the new identity based religion progressives have adopted. Every fundamentalist religion needs a root cause for their fanaticism.
