Put down some landscape fabric between the beds to keep the weeds from growing there. You could also plant onions & radishes in the holes in the blocks. If you plan on planting carrots & potatoes, you might want to add another row of block on an existing bed or build some more beds that will be deeper. Have a great day 😊.

awesome job. FYI if you will plant marigolds in the holes in the blocks around the plants you get several big time benefits. 1. The garden will look amazing 2. Mosquitos and rabbits won't come near. 3. Japanese beatles will go after the marigolds and leave your vegetables alone. They are easy to get started, and are a great way to avoid insecticides. kudos

hi, i wanna give you a tip about the soil, i wanted to grow some things in my apartment so i needed dirt to it so i sat down and researched some dirt, the ones you have is called Loamy soil i think, there is 6 kind of dirt and diffrent things grow in diffrent kind of dirt the best, the 6 dirt kind is called 1, Clay Soil "Clay soil feels lumpy and is sticky when wet and rock hard when dry. Clay soil is poor at draining and has few air spaces. The soil will warm up slowly in spring and it is heavy to cultivate. If drainage for the soil is enhanced, plants will develop and grow well since clay soil can be rich in nutrients. and this is the best thing to use for it Perennials and shrubs, such as Helen’s flower, aster, bergamot, flowering quince, do well in clay soil. Early vegetable crops and soft berry crops can be difficult to grow in clay soil because of its cool, compact nature. Summer crop vegetables can be high yielding vigorous plants. Fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubs thrive on clay soils." 2, Sandy soil "Sandy soil feels gritty. It drains easily, dries out fast and is easy to cultivate. Sandy soil warms up fast in spring and tends to hold fewer nutrients as these are often washed away during wetter spells. Sandy soil requires organic amendments such as glacial rock dust, greensand, kelp meal, or other organic fertilizer blends. It also benefits from mulching to help retain moisture. and this is the best thing to use for it Shrubs and bulbs such as tulips, tree mallow, sun roses, and hibiscus like sandy soils. Root crops like carrots, parsnips and potatoes favour sandy soils. Lettuce, strawberries, peppers, corn, squash, zucchini, collard greens and tomatoes are grown commercially in sandy soils." 3. Silty soil "Silty soil feels soft and soapy. It holds moisture and is usually very rich in nutrients. This type of soil is easily cultivated and can be compacted with little effort. It’s a great soil for your garden if drainage is provided and managed. Mixing in composted organic matter is usually needed to improve drainage and structure while adding nutrients. and this is the best thing to use for it Shrubs, climbers, grasses and perennials such as Mahonia and New Zealand flax like silty soil. Moisture-loving trees such as willow, birch, dogwood and cypress do well in silty soils. Most vegetable and fruit crops thrive in silty soils, which have adequate adequate drainage." 4, Peaty soil "Peaty soil is a darker soil that feels damp and spongy due to its higher levels of peat. It is an acidic soil which slows down decomposition and leads to the soil having fewer nutrients. The soil heats up quickly during spring and can retain a lot of water, which usually requires drainage. Drainage channels may need to be dug for soils with high peat content. Peat soil is great for growth when blended with rich organic matter, compost and lime to reduce the acidity. You can also use soil amendments such as glacial rock dust to raise pH in acidic soils. and this is the best thing to use for it Shrubs such as heather, lantern trees, witch hazel, camellia, rhododendron and azalea. Vegetable crops such as Brassicas, legumes, root crops and salad crops do well in well-drained peaty soils." 5, Chalky soil "Chalky soil is larger grained and generally stonier compared to other soils. It is free draining and usually overlays chalk or limestone bedrock. The soil is alkaline, which sometimes leads to stunted growth and yellowish leaves. Resolve this by using appropriate fertilizers and balancing the pH. Adding humus is recommended to improve water retention and workability. and this is the best thing to use for it Trees, bulbs and shrubs such as Lilac, weigela, Madonna lilies, pinks, mock oranges. Vegetables such as spinach, beets, sweet corn, and cabbage." 6, Loamy soil "Loamy soil, a relatively even mix of sand, silt and clay, feels fine-textured and slightly damp. It has ideal characteristics for gardening, lawns and shrubs. Loamy soil has great structure, adequate drainage, is moisture retaining, full of nutrients, easily cultivated and it warms up quickly in spring, but doesn’t dry out quickly in summer. Loamy soils require replenishing with organic matter regularly, and tend to be acidic. and this is the best thing to use for it Climbers, perennials, shrubs and tubers such as wisteria, dog’s-tooth violets, rubus, delphinium. Most vegetable crops and berry crops will do well since loamy soil can be the most productive of soil types. However, loamy soil requires careful management to prevent depletion and drying out. Rotating crops, planting green manure crops, using mulches and adding compost and organic nutrients is essential to retain soil vitality." hope this helps a little :)

With the blocks turned up the way y'all have them, you could fill them with dirt as well and plant like marigolds in those holes to help with the pests. Here is what I found on the internet of what it says about it. We used to plant them all the time around the garden, but alas, I am too old for stuff like that anymore therefore live my "younger" life via y'all and the framily. The marigold is one of the most well-known insect-repelling plants and with good reason - they have a scent that will keep pests like mosquitoes, nematodes like cabbage worms, and other pests away. Plant marigolds to attract beneficial insects that attack and kill aphids. Ladybugs are especially fond of aphids.

Good suggestion from M D below, and Stacy Hunt's suggestion within it, being a gardener myself for many years I have used blocks and done as they suggest it works well, plus it will help keep the blocks in place with the extra weight and any roots will grow into the ground below, as for the exterior ground soil that is good but has many stones and debrey in it, build yourself 6ft by 3ft riddle with 1/2" square HD mesh nailed /staples on it add 2 legs/struts so you can put it up at an angle, then through shovel fulls of that ground soil at it whilst someone else gently rocks it, the soil will pass through through to the rear for collection and the stones and debrey will be left at the front for disposal, it's hard work but worth it to reclaim the good soil only, mix this with your compost to make it go further.

Don’t worry too much about the rocks in the beds, just Chuck out the big ones and the weeds. it’s more important to get depth of compost in the beds so that your produce can get their roots down so you probably need to raise the height of your beds by one block. Some produce really need soil goodness and are greedy for nourishment and the nutrients in the soil. But it all depends on what you want and are able to do.The raised beds look great. Can’t wait to see the veggies growing! Its gonna be great!Great work!

Tomato cages are great for cucumbers! I used t-posts and string for my tomato plants. You place a t-post every 2-3 tomato plants, then run string between the posts and then you weave your plants in and out of the string as they grow. I had 27 plants and canned 186 quarts, not including what we ate fresh and green tomatoes.

On the rake handle. Been there, done that, so here is a hopefully helpful tip. Split the end of the handle, rake side. Put a carefully carved shim into the split end. Add either a waterproof glue or an epoxy (but I trust water resistant wood glue in that particular application.) Bang it home with the adhesive in place, and let it rest the required amount of time. Hopefully good to go from now on. Glad to see y'all planting, looking forward to some crops.

When the take head comes off pour a bit of linseed oil in the hole, and put the head back in. Jam the handle on the ground a few times to seat the head in. Let it set over night. The 'moisture' in the oil will expand the wood a bit, this holding the head in. I have drilled a hole thru and put a small bolt thru to hold it. If I remember right, that small portion of take head (that goes back into the handle) is tempered which makes drilling hard. Heat it up to break the temper.

Rocks will continually rise to the surface, especially after thaws. If you just get the surface rocks off the garden and then fill with good soil, etc. you can (when tilling for new season) just pull the surface rocks. This will be a seasonal prep. Clean the inside of the rake (or any tool) head and the wood or plastic handle and use super glue. It should hold for the life of the tool.

Next time, kids... Back the truck up to where the tailgate has passed the cinder blocks. Then lower the tailgate and push the dirt out. You'll move a heck of a lot more dirt in a blink. Doing it shovel by shovel is a huge waste of time and energy. Also, in the future, lay down geotextile fabric on the ground under the dirt. It helps prevent weeds from the dirt below and it helps keep the roots of your vegetables from rooting into the crappy dirt below.

The garden beds look great. If you fill the blocks with dirt you can plant basil and smaller plants in there. Use basil and marigolds around where your tomatoes get planted and it will keep them free of some of the stuff that eats them. The kids did a great job and seemed to be having fun in the dirt especially Mr. Abraham.

Looks great guys. You should plant Herbs mums and marigolds in the cinder block holes for insect repelent. The block walls will discourage them from invading.
