Will a student receive stipend during coursework i.e. before comprehensive exam ? Because you said registration takes place after comprehensive exam? And PhD fellowships are offered from the date of registration. Please clarify

Yes you will get the stipend from the beginning . But your actual registration of PhD would be after the registration seminar. suppose you failed to clear the comprehensive exam, then you will not be eligible for registration seminar. And if you failed to clear two times then your enrolment will get cancelled.

Your focus should be on basics like fluid mechanics thermodynamics and fundamentals of CFD. Software you can learn according to your need while doing PhD. For example if you want to pursue your career in CFD, you can learn Ansys Fluent, OpenFoam , Matlab etc.
