how much of the original steam locomotive survives in Tom Rolt did they just make a few changes for it to run on the Talylyn railway like fitting a better cab suitable for Welsh weather?

The original locomotive was an 0-4-0 WT, so there is that.

Tom Rolt was a newly built locomotive in 1991, using donor parts from an Andrew Barclay (boiler, wheels, cylinders, motion etc) - it is wholly different and very much it's own thing!
