Wow. . .I am going through it with the rack and pinion on my Gen 3 4 Runner! I just went the way of the Replacement unit!! Looks like I dodged the wild rebuild route!! You are brave to take this bad boy on!! Glad you are back!!

Great work and nice videos. Thanks a lot for the series. I had an R34 25GT myself in red between 2010 and 2014, right before I got myself a black 25GTT. I did some work on them myself as well, belts, plugs, injectors etc. My steering rack is currently leaking at a rate of the cylinder going from high to low measure in about 30k km, so I will not be rebuilding it anytime soon, but when I will your video is going to come in handy for sure. Thanks a lot!

Thanks, glad you liked the vid. If you're only going high to low over 30,000kms you might find just some fluid with sealant additives might keep you running for a while longer.

I didn't miss a minute of this episode although I don't even have an R34! 😁Great job as always, and kudos on persevering through the hurdles. Can't wait for the Celica content! 👍

great walkthrough. i'd have used a low viscosity grease for closed gears (EP/NGLI 0 or 0,5). EP/NGLI 2 squeezes out of the gears and they can end up running dry, also marginally increases friction in the system. another tip is to put the seatbelt through the steering wheel so it doesn't move off centre.
@TheBuildRoom9 ай бұрын
Interesting - haven't had any issues with it so far and have done a fair amount of kms but will keep the grease info in mind for the next one. Thanks

Do you have a parts list for the steering rack. Specifically the pinion bearing and what not
@5iibee5 ай бұрын
Helpful video, just done my rack. You don’t need a tool to get the seal out though, you can knock it out from the pinion side with a socket and extension 🤙🏻
@TheBuildRoom5 ай бұрын
Wasn't enough left on my seal to catch the edge with a socket, but good info for people that might not have too much wear and can get it out an easier way 👍👍
@5iibee5 ай бұрын
@@TheBuildRoom I wonder if I have a didn’t rack version to you because mine had a thick metal washer behind the inner seal which is what helped me knock the seal out from the other side 🤷🏻♂️

Many thanks for this informative video. Would a suitable sized socket + extension in the rear end push out the recalcitrant seal?
@TheBuildRoom Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it. Doubtful any socket would work to push out that seal. The seal seats down onto a metal lip and the internal diameter of that lip is only a hair wider than the ID of the seal, so it wouldn't have enough meat to push on. The seal removal tools come from the other side and expand into the seal to pull it out.

Hey great video. I don't really have the space, equipment or knoweldge on rebuilding a rack. But i bought one off ebay and while it does not leak it makes a bunch of noises and pops, and it makes that thumping noise when you turn the steeringwheel left/right very fast. I took it off my car and put the original one back on as they both seemed similarly worn The ebay seller let me keep the rack for free when i tried to return it. Since then though my rack has developed some play on the rod part and a clicking noise and starting to cause weird suspension problems. I was thinking of taking my ebay one to a rack rebuilding shop. I was wondering if the issues I mentioned would fix this rack since there is no leaking issues. Or will changing all these parts make it function like a new rack?
@TheBuildRoom6 ай бұрын
Are you sure the play and noises are coming from the rack and not the tie rod ends? If it's just worn out rod ends you can replace pretty easy with the rack in place. Otherwise you'd need someone to inspect your rack, it could be a bust bearing or something. Seals and bearings are fixable, damaged gears not so much.

So where did you source the upper pinion gear seal? part #? need to replace exact same seal on 2015 Q50 V37

A local power steering company sourced for me, wasn't expensive and they had it listed.

How about using an electrical conduit, which is plastic, and push the seal out from the other side? Would that work? How long did the rebuild take approximately I have a leaking 350z steering rack I’m thinking of rebuilding?
@TheBuildRoom9 ай бұрын
Nah i don't think the lip of the seal has enough strength to transfer enough force to shift the seal - its a tight one. I'd recommend just hiring a tool.

Where is the solenoid on your ps rack? I have an r34 gtt and my rack has a solenoid on it.. What is the difference between the 2 racks?
@drnc8770 Жыл бұрын
Nobody know?
@Glock18Kid Жыл бұрын
Yeah mate, that is actually a difference between a non turbo and turbo r34 steering rack. The solenoid on the gtt is for variable steering assistance, so at low speeds it will assist the most, and at higher speeds it will be very little assistance. Apart from the solenoid, the racks are pretty much the same @@drnc8770
