Late to the party, but I also have the same axe. Hitting a hidden screw is my worst nightmare! I don’t have the fancy wheel so would have to do it all on the Japanese Waterstones. I suppose I’ll need to think about how to create the concave profile. Thanks for the video!

Hi there! You don't have to create a hollow, a scandi grind is how Kalthoff's come, and it's a wonderful bevel style for carving. The hollow only comes up because I am working on a wheel, so it will happen no matter what

I saving up for a Kalthoff axe, would you recommend it based on your usage? I have experienced a similar issue where a tree had absorbed a barbed wire fence! Great videos and helpful tips.

I would say that the Kalthoff is the most well balanced axe I have carved with. It is a little light for my daily use preference, but it always feels wonderful to use 🙂👌

Similar question - I've got a Robin wood carving axe that hit something right on the bottom corner and turned the corner sideways - how should I work that out? is it best to grind off the corner and then just reset the scandi grind, or is there a way to pull the metal back into place?

A great question, so that steel will be compromised, you will have to grind back behind the compromised steel and reset the bevel

Hello Andy!!! I have the same ax from Julia. As far as I understand, there were chips due to sharpening the CONCAVE LENS, but you made straight descents?

Sorry, I'm not sure I quite follow you? I was creating a "concave" and then flattening either side of that hollow, I can't remember if that's what I said in the video 😂

@@andyspoons But you can’t write right away through a Russian translator? I don’t know English, but copying from KZbin is a problem

I'm sorry there is a bit of a loss in translation here, but it's great to hear you have the same axe! It's a wonderful tool 👌
