I had a dentist who retired around 1990, and sold his practice to another sole-practitioner across town. The new dentist recommended complete replacement of the two crowns the previous dentist had done years earlier. Wouldn't quote a price, but referred me to the office manager. I left and never went back. Found another dentist closer to home, and didn't mention the recommended crown replacements when I first visited. The dentist found no oral problems on that exam other than a need to "fill in" the cementation of those existing crowns. He did that, and I have had no further dental issues since then, just routing preventive visit. Undoubtedly saved me a lot of money and from having to go through an unnecessary procedure. Still have those two crowns that supposedly needed replacing 34 years ago! It pays to get another opinion, sometimes.

I'm glad you mentioned about dentists. It seems they are only out to make a buck and are not remotely interested in your actual health. I now have a real distrust whenever I have to go because they try and upsell you things you clearly don't need like a deep cleaning, fluoride treatments, gum medicines(which you will swallow away). I've had hygienists get mad because I refuse these things and they try and instill fear in me. Well they get a cut for all these upsell items. I know my teeth don't need this but it must work on a lot of people who trust them.

I have had a similar experience with dentists since my long time dentist retired about 15 years ago. Unfortunately, I have never been able to find a new dentist that does not want to do a "master plan" for my mouth. Thank you Clark, for talking about this today.

My dentist of years recently dropped my insurance. I didn't know until I had a visit and got a bill afterward. When I called about the bill, they said they made a "business decision" to drop my insurance. Then they tried to sell me on joining their concierge club to save money. I made a business decision to find a new dentist.

Educating yourself is key to financial investing. A flat fee Fiduciary is the best way to go if you’re not doing it yourself. When it comes to the dentist for major work I go abroad (medical tourism). I went to Costa Rica had a vacation w me and my GF and saved over $10K compared to the U.S. cost and never had a problem with the work they did plus the dentist graduated in the U.S and started a practice in Costa Rica. I highly recommend it.

I had gone to a dentist since 1978 and he had yo relocate his office. I followed him to a corporate dental office. When he relocated his office, it wasn’t long after that his office staff retired and about 1-1/2 years later, he retired. I felt as if they were pushing procedures and products I didn’t need. When he retired, I started looking for a dentist. Now I go to the UT dental school. It takes a lot of time and patience; however, I’m happy with the service, costs and work.

No kidding. My son , age 29, had not seen a dentist for 3 years. I took him over to my local corporate dental office. Saw a dentist was told he had 12 cavities. He has never had a cavity before, so we were shock. He then went to a dentist with his own practice recommended by his aunt. New dentist said he has no cavities!

Our dentist of 25 years recently retired and sold the practice and the new dentist has jacked the prices on everything. With our insurance we never had an out of pocket expense for cleanings now we are getting $100 bills. Time to shop for another. Also, are we over obsessed with teeth in the U.S.? How do dentists in Britain stay in business?

@Deutsche89
@Deutsche89 7 ай бұрын
The fee increase is because of the added cost from the new dentist buying the practice. The new dentist has all the overhead of the old dentist plus the payment for the practice purchase. In addition to that the new dentist probably has 500k in student loans. So your 100 bucks is paying off the old dentist and the education of the new dentist. He would go out of business if he didnt raise fees and there would be no dentist to go to.

Wish I'd seen your article about the dentist before. A 'new' dentist I recently got caused me tremendous jaw pain that lasted for weeks. My primary doctor after my begging, did an MRI. It was discovered that the dentist anesthesia needle, cause a blood clot. Emergency surgery had to be done to fix the problem. Consulted an attorney who said, the fact that I am healing so well, makes it expensive for them to present a case of malpractice. Told me I had 2 years to file, if something gets worse. So bottom line if a dentist injures you, you need to stay disfigured in order for it to be worth a lawyers time. Yes, after this is all over I'm going back to my old dentist, whom I only left because she did not take my insurance plan for the crown replacements.

Talk to brokers instead of company salesmen ! Not only that Humana in certain zip codes help people of low income with money for mortgages, medical needs, food, water bills, electric and gas bills. This all helped me during a death in the family and saved my home !

Blood pressure taken by Cardiologist is BY FAR the most accurate. Dental assts use inferior bp tools (usually wrist cuffs) and only do this to "check a box" on the form so the dentist can bill insurance for the "exam" portion.

Just had a cleaning too and the price was very close to yours. You should not need xrays and a dental exam every time you get a cleaning. I go about 3x a year for cleaning only but definitely don't get xrays or dental exam all 3 times. I had a lit of xrays at one point last year. I am sorry I can not remember the price. But the office said I should need those xrays done about once every 3 years. If a problem comes up you may need an xray for a specific tooth or area. Hope this helps.

I have spent a good amount of money at this office , however they are a great dental office. Also no insurance that I know of covers fluoride treatment for adults , yet every office will offer fluoride treatment to an adult patient and upon reading about fluoride the treatment is not necessary for adults. I should add I have gotten the fluoride treatment as an adult but have passed on it my last few office visits.

This was a major fail on Clark's part today when describing flat fee financial advisors. And, no, I'm not writing a Clark Stinks or Ask Clark. This is what this comment section is for. Please pass along to Christa. He did not give any information on how to find one of these planners. So, I let the AI loose and it also did not provide any names, firms, etc. Just more generic useless information. Here is part of it, which made my head explode: a typical flat fee for a comprehensive financial plan can range from $1,500 to $3,000, while timed or retainer rates can run between $150 to $400 an hour and between $1,000 to $7,500 annually.

Fiduciaries may be legally required to operate in our best interests, but who holds their feet to the fire? Their clients? It may take years for a client to figure out they’re getting bad advice, if ever. Their supervisors? If they’re making money, that probably won’t happen. I’m skeptical of anyone who has their hand in my pocket.

I lost hundreds of thousands of dollars because a fiduciary financial adviser mismanaged my retirement investments. Finding an attorney willing to sue was difficult and ultimately I settled for a fraction of the financial damage done. It will take me a decade to recover my losses, even after the settlement. And to your point, I had no idea about the mismanagement for years, until it was accidentally discovered by me one day. Proceed with great caution.

A rotten 401k plan is rotten but the employer picks that company because he is shifting the costs of the plan onto the employees, at the expense of long term returns, which will be rotten.
