Those other two people on horseback are the pickup men. Their job is to help the rider off the horse to prevent any sort of injury, but their job is also to remove the flank strap from the horse before it leaves the arena. They're also in charge of slowing down the horse in case a rider hangs up.

It's great to learn the true origin of cowboys. It began with Capitán Blas María de la Garza Falcón, the original colonizer of Texas. Search for "Mexican Rodeo" and you'll see many other cowboy skills never adopted by the Americans. Vaquero culture was Anglo-washed by carpetbaggers after the Mexican-American war, in particular a New Yorker, steamboat Captain Richard King.

Pit Groove suggests that the flank strap is as a person might use a belt. A belt is to hold up trousers, what does this flank strap do? It doesn't hold anything up, its doesn't keep the saddle on, the cinch does that. It has no other purpose than to irritate the bull or horse and if the aninmal isn't irritated or in pain enough to buck then the flank stap can be easily tightened until it does. Pit Groove recommended another video in which a very calm, very well handled horse in a calm situation had a very loose, sheepskin flank strap fitted. Surprise, it wasn't bothered and quite insulting to think it demonstrated anything other than contempt for the viewer.

Looking at the above video for eg at 19.12 the thin rope can clearly be seen around the bull just before its stifle, not around its girth, no leather, no sheepskin and if you look at the shadowing ealier on it's tight, the flesh is squeezed. So what is the this rope for? It doesn't hold anything in place, the rider can't use it to hang on with. It's to inflict pain in the most sensitive of places, the genitals, and hence the bull bucks frantically to rid himself of it, not the rider, the rider isn't causing him pain otherwise he'd stop bucking when he fell off.

People are asking why the bulls and horses buck, its nothing to do with the rider, they continue to buck after he's fallen off, its because there is a thin rope tied tightly round their lower back which pinches their penis and is very painfull so they buck to try and get it off.

It sounds to me like you know nothing about the sport of rodeo at all. The flank straps are either leather straps covered in sheepskin or soft cotton ropes, and they go around the animal's hips the same way a person puts on a belt. In no way shape or form does it inflict pain on the animal's private parts.

Mr Pit Groove, I was puzzled by your reply so I asked an open question on some YT rodeo videos about the flank strap and the reply has been, obviously by rodeo fans, that indeed, the flank strap is, to quote, 'Yes they make em buck .....make em madder than mad....s port...but ???yes it hurts' 'Forget the myth of rodeos as all-American sport. Modern rodeos are cruel and deadly for animals. Traditional ranch work has been perverted into a spectacle of animal abuse disguised as “western tradition.”' is another quote. Bear baiting was finally banned in the UK in 1835. I should imagine that rodeos will be banned in all us states by 2024.

@@protectanimals6083 how many times do I have to tell you roping calves is something that takes place on farms and ranches all the time, and in the rodeo they don't stay tied around their neck for anywhere near as long of a time as they do when having branding done or a procedure, and they still use that soft grass rope which you still don't seem to understand how it works. Second of all the Bulls in bull riding can already Buck without the flank strap on their waist, but it's only there to encourage the bull to Buck higher. The Bulls know their job! I'm pretty sure I actually know the true reason why they use a prod in the sport of rodeo, and that's only as either an act of encouragement or just a little reminder that it's time to perform! And yeah, I did defend that cow in the SHARK video because it's another thing that takes place on cattle farms and ranches just as often as roping calves does! What you need to get into your tiny brain is that rodeos are derived from normal work that takes place on ranches, whether that be breaking in horses and training them to obey their riders commands or simple work that involves branding cattle, doing medical procedures on cattle, and the rest of the long list of chores that take place on farms and ranches that have cattle. What else do you need to know!
