I started using "private label" that we called generic way back when I was in college. It all started with the brand EX.......N that I was taking for cluster headaches. I stumbled onto the generic equivalent which was about half the price. So... I started looking for generic replacements for everything. Basically it appears that mostly what we are paying for in the brand name products is their ADVERTISING. Sort of a waste of money as far as I am concerned. Thanks Howard. Take care...

Short-term rental owners, typically high income professionals looking for a tax write-off, are killing the Golden Goose with poor business practices. Recently had a personal experience with this. For the past year and a half, our son has been renting a home in a lovely, quiet area in a rural town along a river. He's loved it and has a great relationship with his landlord. He's now fleeing the spot, having given the required notice, after the property next to him sold and is being poorly managed. Drunk and loud groups of renters and family members have the neighborhood up in arms and seeking legal redress. Local law enforcement has been called out multiple times. It's really awful. We've been Airbnb renters and we strive to respect the nearby homeowners, but this is not always the case.

I only have a Walmart for food in my rural area. I do not like any Great Value food. Once I got some GV Half n' Half. I figured it must have meant half milk, half water.

@karinchristensen220 Yeah, it's cheaper for a reason beyond not having a name brand on the label. I have never had much luck with generics beyond OTC medicines.

Who else remembers those crappy black & white label generic products of the early 1980s? They were good for one thing: starting the tend of store brands that we rely on now.

At Chili’s in California, you can get a burger, fries, drink (free refills) plus a side salad or cup of soup for $10.99 all the time. Better deal than you can get at a fast food place.

I grew up on Miracle Whip and stop purchasing it when they started using HFCS. I’ve easily tried half a dozen store brands and nothing compares. Food that is very specific in taste is difficult to replace with generic.

Not that Walfart needs help but, I take umbrage with Clark saying Great Value does not taste good. I have found for many decades, it is often better than the brand name version. It is also cheaper! Clark should be on board with this! Some of the GV stuff I buy: - GV Mini Bear Choc. Graham Cookies (warning, highly addictive! I need to stop those…) - GV Chocolate Fudge Fiber Brownies (way better than the well known brand and, do not contain some dangerous sweetness and chemicals in the bran name) - GV Peppermint Tea (the cheapest of all) - GV Greek Plain non fat yogurt (no better and no worse than store brands from Lidl, Aldi, Giant, etc. but the best store brand yogurt is Costco) - GV Greek Yogurt in cups with fruit on bottom (just like other store brands, maybe better) - GV Almond Milk (same) - GV Wonton Strips (same) - GV Almond Crunchy Honey Oats (way cheaper than most others, better) - GV Wheat Sandwich bread (this one is not the best but there is no best for this cheap as heck bread from ANY store, might as well save a buck) - GV Pitted Dates (very good but some variation in quality, probably from CA which has the best dates, Costco has the best dried dates - also CA grown) - GV Light Red Kidney Beans No Salt Added (for Clark, this is one he should be eating, for his heart health, BTW: Lidl has a big line of no salt beans now, red, black, chick, etc.) - The GV toilet paper (Walmart bought a TP brand/factory a few years ago. I forget the name of it but, it was the best TP. Top rated by CR too. Walmart now sells it as GV but, it is not the same. Not good. So now, like the cheap bread, there is no good store brand TP now and I can't join two clubs like Clark does just to get better TP. It is sufficient but cheap.) Also like bread slices, TP from any brand is now smaller sheet sizes! Concerning Target abundance of in house brands: - Why the heck is Clark shopping at Target? I thought he did not? ;-) - Seriously though, this is not a problem. A decade or more ago, I figured out that, in most cases, if you see a new brand, it is most likely a Target in house brand. Target has always been into this approach back when it was called Dayton Hudson. I look at it like Trader Joes! Just go with it. Have fun. Try them out. The only bad thing about Target in house food brands is that they tend to be sodium bombs since, most are highly processed foods. BTW: Even TJs carries some name brands here and there. OK, some are from South Africa or New Zealand but, they are name brands!

Okay Clark I give up! I bragged before that I never had rental car issues. Just got permanent two charges from Hertz, for cars that I reserved, but 'did not' pick up at the FLL airport. Got to the airport and HERTZ didn't have any EV's on the lot like I requested, so I rented from Avis instead. Tried to cancel the rental at the Hertz counter and was told, "we do not do that here, anymore, don't worry, the reservations will just drop off since you didn't pick anything up". I called the customer service anyway to cancel, no one ever picked up. Saw the 'hold' charges on my credit card, and thought they would drop off. Nope, they turned into real charges. Sending letter to the CEO of Hertz in Florida NOW, showing my completed rental receipt from Avis at the same airport for the same timeframe. Geez. So I will never brag again.

@chuckinhouston9952 What a way to live your life wrapped up in worrying about passing culture wars. I remember when my brother freaked out a couple years ago after Fox News told him he should be mad whenever the Mr Potato Head toy made some sort of change. His kids are grown adults and he is not buying toys. So stupid.

Actually, it depends. Sometimes things are cheaper at Target than Walmart but, Walmart is just so bigger that, for the $5 or so you save on the cart, might as well go to Walmart. Which half the time, depending on the mix, might be a few bucks cheaper anyway. But I always check Target and Walmart online if it is a specific item I am looking for. However, again, Target is so thin, I rarely find it at both. However, the Target web site sucks and has always sucked. That alone kept me away from ordering from them for years. It is still terrible. They just never could figure out that end of the business. Even Walmart struggles too with its UI and UX. Especially for pick ups. So even if Target is cheaper sometimes, it is not worth it because of all the issues with the web site, pickup, store lighting, etc.

🧐 I think people should start if they’re not already, videoing the place they’re staying at as soon as they arrive, I could just see rentals coming back on people on things that they weren’t responsible for just like they do with car rentals 🤨

The sooner short term rentals are made illegal the better. We have one right behind us. Most of the people that rent these units are inconsiderate, loud annoying assholes. They have absolutely have no consideration for the full time neighborhood residents. Screaming kids, loud music, screaming obscenities, barking dogs, loud parties, etc., etc., etc. We have written many letters to our local City officials, State officials, Law enforcement, Governor, AirBnB, Vrbo, etc. I will continue to do my part to shut down these rentals.

I basically did. I used to go to a major grocery to just get it done and just went to cheaper for specific things. But the major became so expensive, I now go to the cheaper one, then drive to the expensive for the 4 or so items only a full size grocery store sells. My spending with the full size went from $400± a month to zero in 2023 then up to $40 a month recently to get just those few things not found at Lidl or Walmart - which has all the rest I need cheaper. In 2023, I just went without from the big store. Just what I needed to live. Mostly from Lidl (a big one with a bakery).

Your "power" is to not vote for politicians who cause inflation by government spending.
@jdm1039
@jdm1039 8 ай бұрын
Worldwide inflation, such as we have recently experienced, is caused by many, many factors. It is never just one thing. With that said, there are not very many politicians to choose from if that is your litmus test. The last time we did not have a budget deficit was under Clinton. The debt has climbed consistently under every president since.

Some of the increase in restaurants is directly the rebound from states mandating raises in wages. Businesses are not charities and we the consumer end up paying.

There is a danger that a buyer strike can lead to lower prices through cheapening or adulteration of the product, and of course, further shink-flation. Consumers need to be aware of this and complain if it happens.

What they're going to end up doing they're going to replace their Great value brand with their more premium brand which is going to be almost as much as the name brand stuff and it's going to price out a lot of the people that count on the Great value brand to fill their baskets up
