Nintendo should totally do a Gameboy Classic release! Maybe model it after the Color or Pocket but have a modern screen and other features. It could come preloaded with a bunch of GB/C/Adv games! I would hope they would leave it open for us to put our own roms on it but if not I am sure modders would figure it out.

That's a beautiful build. I'm so impressed at how you matched those colours, and on the white shell too. Looks great! I'm slightly gutted though. I did the whole LOCA front light mod years ago to the GBC; and am current fitting a panel a bit like you one you fitted here. Unfortunately mine is one of those 4x4cm square screens with a modified Lense... It's a really nice display, but I'm not even finished that and I'm already thinking about how I want to recreate what you've done! Haha the internet has no end of enticing projects!

I bought the same screen for my GameBoy Color (though I ordered it directly on Aliexpress personally, cheaper, especially the shipping costs, USA/CA to France is often pretty expensive). Should arrive in a few days, according to the tracking. And I asked a friend with a 3D printer to print the brackets. And I'll kept the original shell (don't like fake ones).

Hey I have an honest question. Is there a huge difference in quality in GBC housing shells from different vendors? I bought a pikachu SP shell, but the quality was trash. Does RetroModding quality compare to OEM? How about ebay/AliExpress vendors, are they the same quality as retromodding for gbc?

Lol. Don't use AliExpress. The cheaper you try to get stuff the cheaper the quality will be. Just buy from Retromodding it's probably your best option. I'm not sponsored by them and they've never sent me anything for free but I always buy from them and handheld legend. 👊👊

@@suicide19915 Depend for what. Screens, come from the same warehouse (they don't produce them themselves). About the shells I don't know but fake ones never feel like the real ones, whatever the quality put in it. I'm not even sure they produce their own shells, but they are probably more regarding about the quality of the ones they sell. About HHL, customer support is not fantastic. I had to yell a lot a few months ago to get a new package sent to my house. They did an error in my shipping adress (error was their fault, it automatically added some useless parts on the shipping adress). The tracking was saying the package could not be delivered and was sent back to USA but still, they first wanted to wait until they get it back to send a new one. After a lot of e-mails and a paypal dispute, they finally sent a new one but it has been pretty hard to get a new one sent quickly. A fantastic customer support would have sent a new package as soon as they saw the tracking was saying it was sent back to USA. Not to mention I didn't even get a compensation for the +15days of delay.

Full size screen sounds great. One thing i ran into problems with is installing a faster crystal with the Freckleshack. It doesmt seem to be compatible. I ordered a IPS screen for the GBA and Ill be installing that with a different crystal to see if it works. The AGS101 screens dont seem to have a problem with these faster crystals and Im ok with those, but one of my 101 screens ghost more than the other and thats really annoying.

Hey, this is a honest question. Why not paint the inside of a clear shell instead of painting the outside? It'd prevent scratching and not give the console a weird texture.

I've done that lots of times and it's definitely nice (although time consuming to mask the edges properly). But if you use good quality plastic primer and finish with a couple coats of varnish, it's actually a pretty durable surface that doesn't scratch easily. But yeah, this could look amazing on the inside of a clear shell.

Is there any loss of rigidity/stability to that battery contact’s solder point when cutting it? Would reflowing after cutting help?

I have an older motherboard model and when i installed that screen i have a noise at the right of the screen but only for the gbc games. If i play gb games is working great. Is not a big problem as it is very hard to notice it when you are playing and is not affecting your game. You used a latest model, i think you said the 06 model? So you may not having that noise.

esotericsean thats the one i bought. I bought a gbc that doesnt turn so that i might try to fix it. Came corroded. I cleaned off the corrosion as much as i could, popped in some batteries and nada. So i bought the ac adapter and nada. Ive bought a switch from an sp that i plan to install on the gbc because after all that i noticed the housing for the switch was dirty and cracked so hopefully that works out. Also need some advice on another if you’ve got any contact info i could dm you at.

i think Level 4 brightness should be enough to play indoors in every scenario right? Pushing max level 5. specially considering that at lv 4 you are consuming 187~ mah vs lv 5 220mah and lv 6 268mah (testing done by Makho on this IPS lcd on GBC).

@@esotericsean on a side note. I was told that Lipo Mah actually has higher capacity/will last longer vs Nimh. For example, 2 AA 2450 would be 4900mah vs 2000mah lipo. People are telling me the 2000mah would still be superior vs AA because of 3.7v vs 2.4. is that true?

What is the kapton tape for? Can I use another kind of tape?

Nihil Kapton is basically like thin electrical tape. But it sticks better, is heat-resistant, and doesn’t leave a residue. Any kind of non-conductive tape should be fine. A lot of these kits include stickers or foam pads which you can use in place of the Kapton.

There are a couple different ones out there. This is the FunnyPlaying IPS v2 which doesn't have the screen tearing issue. RetroModding only carries the v2. But I believe both are available on AliExpress, so be careful.

The "GB Boy Colour" has a backlit color lcd and can be had for $35 shipped. I'm sure this mod is fine, but the screen alone is more expensive than the GB boy.

With the plastic primer, paint, and the matte varnish, it's very durable. I'm sure it could probably rub off eventually, but even my original silver Game Boy Pocket that was painted by Nintendo has paint that's started to rub off.

Tips: Never paint your handheld consoles because the oil and sweat in your hands will corrode the paint. If you can get a clear case for it then go paint it.

@@esotericsean no the display programmed into the driver is full sized the actual display is from a smartphone and is considerably bigger than needs be and requires modification of the shell and motherboard you need to clip off and make flat as possible the through hole pins. We want 100% drop in with no plastic removal no clipping of any kind. Like the retro game shop Chinese mod but 4 mm wider

Dave Oh I see you’re talking about the actual size of the screen, not just the part you see. That’s a bit tricky since no one makes a screen that size. The tooling for it would be more expensive than it would be worth, though we’re making this more and more popular now so maybe it’s still possible to happen in the future.
