It’s 1949 instead of 1945. This is important.

Everyone imagined him with a deep voice. I always imagine his voice as being squeaky and pudgy to fit what he actually looked like.

This is fascinating footage. One of the most important moments in world history. Mao’s Hunan accent is hard to follow as a Chinese learner only accustomed to the Beijing accent.

Back then knowledge of the Mandarin language in China was not nearly as widespread as it is today. It was a luxury, even for the rich and powerful. If you listen to other prominent Chinese leaders speak back in their time, like Sun Yat-Sen or Chiang Kai-Shek, you'll find that all of them have thick accents from their home provinces when speaking Mandarin. Mao speaks Mandarin with an extremely thick Hunan accent, so thick that even I, as a native Mandarin speaker, understand MAYBE 20% of his speech.

.... guys, this was made in the climate of the Cold War. He saying that they didn't understood anything and just responded to some "key words" is just his way of calling them dumb animals who don't think. He even call them one time *"domestic audience"* ! This is propaganda, simple as that.
