Been on vacation. So i just got a chance to watch this video. We sold books for years. On Amazon and Ebay. Amazon was better..We had 10000. In inventory. My husband is going to be 69 and I just turned 64. The lifting were getting to be way to much. So we sold out inventory and now we just do Ebay part time. It is a lot of work and your inventory can be heavy. Also we went to yard sales ,library sales. They were the best. Then other book sales and thiftstores .

20:20 "Prices [of postage] have gone up 10%" I'd welcome that! Here in the UK Royal Mail inland postages charges jumped by over 20% at the start of October in the size/weight bands I most often use; Second Class (2-3 day delivery) Large Letter 100-250g (equivalent to letter size up to 1" thick and around 3.5 to 8 oz for US comparison) went from £1.85 to £2.30! A bit harsh as that's the shipping rate for CDs, DVDs and video games--few of which are terribly high value to start with.

My Go 2 Tape. Very interesting interview. Puts a new vie on what rate to promote at if one chooses to promote. I certainly will pay more attention to books. I do sell some, but I will start looking closer.

Excellent interview. I’m impressed with your ability to ask interesting questions that most of your viewers must like. (True, I haven’t done a survey, so this is just conjecture. Still, I stand by it.)
@dirkellis8500 Жыл бұрын
Matt is exactly right about promoting at 3%. I promote everything at 3.1%, and like him have about 60% of my sales come from promoted. Sellers are chumps to pay anything over 7% in most categories - that puts your total sales fees at about 20%, in line with Posh & Mercari. I've experimented with high promotion percentages and seen little to no benefit to anyone but Ebay.

Good video. I have been a subscriber to @backfromburnout for quite some time, and I just subscribed to @theaussieflipper. One question that I wish you would have asked Mel is why she doesn't promote or even create a link to her eBay store on her KZbin channel. I'm sure she has a good reason, but I would like to visit her store to see what all of her listings look like after watching her go through all of those books in the warehouse.

Thrifts aren't very thrifty any more, and some charity shops aren't very charitable. You have to look for things that slip through. When I sold I handled very few books, only things too old for bar codes. Too much competition and the margins were awful even then. I was just at a church sale who wanted full-on retail for their silver jewelry, and close on a lot of the rest. I left most of it there exept a few bits they (and a reseller who was first in line) missed. Said other reseller was first in the door and got anything worth getting. "We want to make money for the church" ...which won't happen if prices go so high no one buys anything. I didn't even spend $20 after being 5th in line. That's what American resellers are up against, and it sounds like the problem has gone global.
@OriginalNethead Жыл бұрын
Did they have gold? A few pieces... at TRIPLE what they should have been. Full antique store retail. I was in line with a bunch of resellers, one of whom worked for an auction house. He left them too because he knew he'd resell them for half what she wanted. Not happening.

I use 2-3% promotions. And I primarily sell books too. I have a thrift store like 15 minutes from me here in Ohio that has 3 full bookshelfs of rare and valuable books going for just 10 cents. You could never go wrong with that. VHS tapes, DVD's, and cassettes are also 10 cents. You three need to come to Ohio, bc they have a little bit of everything in that store and the restock every Monday. So I always go Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

I wish that ebay would bring their customer service back in the US. I think there is so many problems on their because of the language barrier and culture barrier. If I have an issue I have to call back 3 or 4 times before I get someone who actually understands and is able to help me. Is that saving ebay any money if they have 3 or 4 reps busy with the same issue? Probably not. The best thing would be if they employed ebay sellers to do the customer service calls.

I've been a long time follower of Mel's videos and am insanely jealous of the prices achieved in Australia (as I've commented far too often--sorry Mel). For the majority of book sales in Australia I couldn't even cover the cost of shipping here in the UK--despite charity stores here commonly selling books at 5 for £1 (about $1.30 US/$1.6 Aus). As a book lover it really irritates me that books form such a small part of my inventory; I have far more in my personal collection (around 2000 books) than in my store (around 40) due to the difficulty of finding nooks that have decent resale value. 11m x 5m=55m² which is about 600 sq feet.

Mat like to buy new hardware branded hat calling Bunning hardware straw hats. He pays $5.50 AUD and sell them for around $40AUD. Bunning is the number one hardware shop. Blow my mind that people wanting a straw hat, instead of driving 5 minutes to buy a hat, there wait a week and pay 8 times for same hat. Both these KZbinr I stop watch a long time ago.

Just gotta keep at it. Look for old books. Old self help books go for a lot, in my experience. Sometimes if the book is old enough, buyers won't even care about the condition of the book. I sold a AA book from 1939 that AA meetings gave out for free at one point for $650
