I did it in reverse. In my 30s/40s, I worked in international marketing and traveled to 40 countries. I loved exploring new places, meeting people, and learning different cultures. In my 50s, I left that company, sold everything and traveled full-time, staying up to 3 months in each country. Three years ago, I started my own business and, now age 63, enjoy the convenience and familiarity of having a low-cost home base. There isn’t anywhere else I’d rather be and I’m finally enjoying the comfort of staying in one place!

I went overseas to watch 2 little dogs for free lodging on the outskirts of London. Paid my own airfare$$$. Within 2 days, I had fallen on their kitchen floor (required to take off my shoes and found the floor slippery) and had been biten by a dog with a hx of biting, which had been denied. The dog-sitting was a disaster, although I had done it successfully in the USA. Just a warning to others to not think this is so easy. I moved into a hotel and had more fun and then into an AirBNB, which had its own negatives (3rd floor! and very tiny room and inadequate hot water) but I had a good time in London--my first time there. I did pack lightly per your advice, and the 3rd place finally let me use the washer and dryer--which worked out.

Great video! Definitely can relate to all of these issues. When I first started I planned everything out in advance, including making all the plane and lodging reservations, before I left on the trip. In an effort to be a little more spontaneous (which is difficult because I'm such a planner, lol), I now have a rough plan for the trip and make reservations only for about the first 2 months before I start the trip. The remainder of the trip I do my research on the areas I will visit and make reservations about 2 months out. That gives me a little flexibility to change my plans for the later parts of the trip. Of course, that means having to do the research and reservations while not interfering with enjoying the place you are already visiting. My rule is that I only do the travel planning on weekends. The reason for this is that weekends tend to be busier with more people off from work, meaning sites, museums, public spaces, etc. are going to be more crowded. Those are the kind of days you'd rather just stay in to do the planning and relax. I try to do the sightseeing during the week when it's less busy and less hectic. As for how you travel, I say to each their own. What works for you is what's best for you. Don't compare to others. We all have our various reasons for why we travel this way. You do you! With respect to visas, there can be a problem if you get them too early because they sometimes have a short period of validity once issued. I had that problem when I went to Laos. The validity period of the visa ran out a few days before when I was planning to leave. I could have paid to extend it but ended up just leaving when the visa expired. I'm with you about how long you think you will live this way. I can't see myself not living as a full-time traveler for the foreseeable future. So I plan to do it as long as I enjoy it and as long as I am able! Safe travels in 2024!

John and Beth, your role model and You Tune channel of traveling is a blessing to me. My husband retires January 2024. In the last two years I have traveled to Asia on my own since he is an international pilot working an ever changing schedule. You certainly have to address fears and negativity. I am so excited to create a new lifestyle with world travel, art photography, technology and social media, with my husband of 35 years. My 30 year old daughter is a professional online vocal performer and it’s amazing how many people all over the world she reaches through an interactive Twitch channel and then travels to collaborate. When I create my new social media world in 2024 we can follow each other traveling the world. Here’s to living young at heart in retirement years.

Great video thanks so much for your advice. I retired to part-time in 2019 at 67, and that year spent 2 months in Europe. I caught the last plane out before you-know-what, and all my travel was domestic since then until a short trip to Aruba last year, and trips to Italy and Mexico this year. On my 2-week excursion to Italy I met someone on the train who was traveling full time and got some tips from him, and I've been watching your videos and dreaming about a full-time travel lifestyle for at least a few months if not a few years. In my case I have no grandchildren and nothing really tying me down except my home and stuff. I would likely be traveling solo although friends and family could join for a period of time at their discretion. Like you, I've met some great people on my travels and I don't think I would be lonely although that is a consideration. My immediate plan is to spend 3 months in Europe starting in August of 2024, and take it from there.

Lots of great info. I would love to sell it all and travel, but I am not sure I would want to travel all the time. I have downsized significantly and moved from a bigger home to a smaller one here in SWFL. The cost of living is really high here especially Home insurance and Taxes. And I KNOW that you already know that since you lived in Florida! I had a job last year where I traveled all over the US and enjoyed it except I seemed to get sick pretty frequently from either airborne or food related illnesses. Once was food poisoning.. ugh awful time in a hotel with that!! and another with covid on the tail end of a trip, fortunately I was home for the worst of it. But I had a 'home' to return to. And I am not sure if I didn't have a "home" that I would really feel comfortable bouncing around the world. How was it when you first did it? Did you have an adjustment period? When did that homesickness go away? I would not be able to travel unless I sold it all, so keeping my house really would not be an option. Having someone else in my home while I traveled for work did NOT work out well for me. Do you have a 'budget' video? I am solo and would like to know that I can afford it if I do take the leap. Living in a place a week at a time and eating all the meals 'out' sounds a bit expensive.

Just a tip, even being an Indian I tend to get diarrhea when I go there, so I keep with me some active charcoal or Bentonite clay to drink with water …just saying 😁

Thanks. Very helpful tips. What are your thoughts for staying in each place for longer periods, say 2 weeks to 1 month, so you experience more fully the daily life and culture?
@RetirementTravelers11 ай бұрын
We've done that several times. Medellin and Panama City for a month. We plan on staying in Cape Town for a month this year. We love staying longer periods and plan to do that more in the future, but right now while we are able, we want to see as much of the world as possible. 4:33 I saw you have a 16” MacBook Pro. With 140W AC adapter, that’s a fair bit of weight. That’s what I have and I think I’m going to "side grade" to a 15” Air next year.

We looked at every option available to try to reduce our weight, but with so many large video files and our need to edit multiple projects at once, we needed a computer that could handle many TB at one time. The alternative is to carry backup drives to store the data during editing and they are heavy as well. Bev's computer can process a video quickly and has 8TB storage. One thing we do is carry an Anker 747 charger so we are carrying less plugs. Check out our video here for how we reduce our tech gear. Thanks for the comment! You both are so cute and seems happy. I’ve traveled over 120 cities around the world, on both business trips and backpack trips. But always relied on global hotels and abnb I’m really interested in how you find 3 months homes in your flexpat travel, as I’ve seen your other videos but if you can show example on step by step contacting local relocation instead of hotels and abnb

Thanks so much. We are currently traveling fast so that we can see as much of the world as possible during our younger and healthier years. Our plan is to slow down and spend longer periods in each place as we get older, just not yet. We know some people that go to a town and stay in a hotel for a few days and then contact a local realtor and go see the places they will stay for longer periods. This seems like a petty good strategy to us when the time comes. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

If you didn’t have your KZbin channel and website, how would you find a sense of contributing/giving back? I think that’s really important for a larger sense of meaning; but it seems like volunteering has to be done carefully and mindfully when spending time in another culture.
@RetirementTravelers10 ай бұрын
We think you are right, but as we travel, we see so many opportunities. We've met volunteers, especially young people who are spending some time abroad doing service projects or mission projects for their churches. We admire them so much, and we hope to have some projects that we can get involved with in the future. There is great need everywhere we go. Thanks for the question! Thanks for creating the video. The tip on using a virtual mailbox is helpful, but how do you receive important mail like credit cards? My bank has been sending me new credit cards without asking for them and prior to the expiration. So, I not clear on how you would get physical mail like that. Any ideas on how to solve for that are appreciated. Thanks and happy new year.
@RetirementTravelers10 ай бұрын
We have our mail forwarded by our mail service to our first stop when we are home. While the company has virtual capabilities, you still have physical mail that needs forwarding. They can forward to us abroad or we can forward to our daughter. Our advice is to have someone who can help with urgent matters. You can have one piece pulled and forwarded to someone who can hold it for you. I hope this is what you mean. John & Bev www.retirementtravelers.com

This is such a great, heartwarming and informative video 🏆 Talking about travelling with (grand)children...I want to mention "The Bucketlist Family": they travelled with their (now) 3 children, two of them, since they were born. Your children and grandchildren are very, very fornunate to have (grand) parent like you: what better rolemodel can one be, than showing love and interest in our beautiful World, to live life to the fulliest (without stuff), and to embrace the unknown with an open heart? ❤ I honestly don't see any downside to that. I wish that many more people (including myself) were able to persue their dreams, like you do. Thank you ❤ Bev & John Greetings from Denmark

Just curious if you ever run across women who travel Full Time as solo travelers? Since my husband passed, I have traveled to Europe several times for 2-4 weeks with lady friends but it’s difficult to find someone who is available either time-wise or financially, so am thinking I may go it alone full time for awhile. Just not sure how safe this is… thanks for your advice.
