Thank you. My daughter would offer to let me stay with her but she's trying to find a new place to live. I like living on my own anyway. She comes over to take me grocery shopping so I don't have to try to get everything on the bus. She also helps me carry everything upstairs. There's been a lady named Janine who watched the interview and recognized my complex. She has brought me 2 weeks worth of cooked meals. All I have to do is put them in the microwave. She's a great cook. A gentleman from New York some how got my address and sent me a package with a toy and some treats for Pumpkin. When I did the interview, I never dreamed it would get the response it got. I feel loved and I don't feel alone. There are so many of us going through the same thing. I'm more fortunate than so many other seniors. My heart really goes out to them. I don't complain because it would just leave me feeling negative. I don't like feeling negative.

$1050 a month for a single room? And it takes almost all of her social security? This is disgraceful. This woman worked her entire life, spent time caring for her ailing sister and now she is essentially trapped. The fact that she says she's fine and doesn't need much doesn't excuse this situation.

This is why people need to work and save during their early years, I am so that by the time I retire my home is pay off and has minimum maintenance… I tell my friends to buy something while they are young but they rather rent…even with all these ridiculous prices… I know if a lady who bough a small home worked really hard in a bakery … did not make crazy money but she saved and the she paid off the home by the time she retired …now she is enjoying her retirement…

My family get angry at me because I take care of my grandmother, instead of just moving out and leaving her alone in a big city, but when I see videos like this, it further instills the desire to take care of her. She took care of me and laid down her personal desires to raise me. There is no way I could turn my back on her so that she doesn’t “ stunt my life”. It would literally feel like a dishonor! 💯

As odd as this may sound, judgement of any kind is fundamentally evil. Judging or determining what another human "deserves" without the totality of understanding their history and the wrong they've likely done to others, presumes that God is "unfair". Empathy is better than "judgement".

I too live in a old hotel changed into a efficiency for 1000 a month. I bring in 930 in ss. I can't afford anything extra at all. I have worked hard all my life. I never thought at 67 I would struggle like this. They do not do hardly any repairs,and want you to be grateful that you pay 1000 dollars for a room that doesn't even have a closet, very small room and bathroom. After the second month my ceiling gave way to neglected pipes upstairs. I had to stay up outside all night because of flooding and my bed was soaked. These are not furnished. I didn't have extra to even get a motel so I slept on a ceramic tile floor. The manager stated I should have had renters insurance. My door barely closes and locks. I cook on rusty stove and refrigerator,both old. The manager said I should be grateful. Mind you, I am grateful that I don't live in the streets, but to me 1000 a month is way too much for this efficiency. Florida is out of control for rental properties. It's not a good life, but you try to do the best you can.❤

Well, they should fix our broken healthcare system first so we can have the medical benefits that they do! Many people end up bankrupt or homeless in this country due to medical debt and illness/disability. I am a retired nurse and I cry when I hear people saying that a nurse should still work when she/he is over 70 ! They have no idea how those retiring nurses worked. I’m the expert after working full time for 45+ years. We were standing/rushing/bending/ lifting 80% of the time and did not have the help of nurse’s aides- more aides were hired in the recent years.( lower wages ) . My hard work and long hours rewarded me with a bad back, bad hips, and feet/leg pains that did not ‘retire’ when I did. Save all your money (or have kids-you can’t do both) 😢

Sadly, many folks dont realize this until they retire and cant afford to live. Instead, pass that money along to needy seniors who have lived and worked here legally!

This kind, humble woman deserves so much more. To put it into perspective, my mother has a fully paid for three bedroom two bathroom 16x80 trailer home on private property with a low mileage car, every appliance you can imagine, whatnots and pictures hanging from wall to wall and on shelves from end to end, high speed internet, smart tv, laptop computer, a refrigerator and freezer overflowing with food, and is online regularly buying things from eBay and Amazon. She has free health care, social security income of over $1,100 a month, thousands in the bank ( and stashed), plus I provide her additional money when money is available from an old rent property we purchased together. Nevertheless, she is constantly complaining of how terrible her life has turned out and how miserable her life has become, and, of course, that it's all my fault somehow. And now I sit and I watch in amazement as this kind lady expresses great appreciation for everything she has, no matter how little it actually is. She is a good, decent, kind person and deserves all of the things other people far less grateful now have.

I made the same promise to my Mom, and kept it. I wouldn't have been able to if I stayed with the person I first attempted a marriage to. But I was able to escape that relationship and was blessed to meet a worthy man. Thanks to my husband I was able to care for Mom for many years in her own apartment and then when that was no longer possible she moved in with us where I was able to care for her for 5 years until her death at 96 yrs. So if you're not married and think it may be in your future, this is an essential matter to factor in your choice of spouse. 'Sunkissed', you will not regret having your mom with you. My mom and I were like oil and water, and boy was hubby nervous. We had our moments, but I knew that I *had* to get along with her because she *needed* us. And I asked her to be patient with me because I wanted to care for her to the best of my ability and I wouldn't be able to do that if we were not able to get along. And I worked hard to be patient with her. And I prayed to God for grace. Boy dud I pray for grace! And it worked out! We created happy memories, we had difficult times, we prayed together. She got more dependent as her dementia increased and she started believing I was her Mom at times. But hubby and I gave it 100%. You've not asked gor advice, I know, so take what you find helpful in my words, and leave the rest behind. Consider creating relationships now who would be open to being your support group when the time comes fir when you may need it. I had two cousins who each came once a month and gave me a few hours to do what I wanted, and sometimes stayed with her overnight. I also had a friend whom she got to know who would come with treats for her now and then. It made a huge difference. I also attended therapy once a week, over the phone, to help me walk the walk. We created her own space for her at our home years before she moved in and she would have overnights with us just to spend time with us. And when she moved in, she already felt like it was her home too, because she had her own space within it. When Mom passed this summer, my manner of grieving took me by surprise. It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I realize now that it is because I walked the end of her life with her 24/7. The last two months I slept on a cot outside her room because she needed 24/7 care. I held her hand, literally and figuratively, walking with her to meet death in a natural, peaceful, manner, at home, with those she loved and who loved her. Hospice care at the end was such a blessing. I only wish we had received it sooner. Most counties and/or states have a senior helpline. Use it. I wish you well for when the time comes when she may need to live with you for any variety of reasons. If you hear 'horror' stories from others who had their parents live with them, take note for precautions but don't let them scare you. Everyone's experiences are different, and yours may be as wonderful, even if difficult, as ours. But I heard your heart in your comment, and with a heart as yours, it will rise above any difficulties you may face. There is so much grace, love and joy that comes with the difficulties of having one's parent(s) live with them. One just needs the openness to receive it. I wish more people were open. Our world would be better off. Whatever the future brings for uou and your mom, I wish you Peace, God's grace, and good fortune.

How many people fo you think will continue yo sacrifice, work hard, choose to save $ and choose to make retirement plans, reserving the govt assistance to those who happened to fall on hard times despite efforts to care for themselves? Now with that stated, blaming this particular woman for her situation is limited thinking, I agree with you. It's a tight rope walk, but one I believe better answered by creating caring communities as opposed to govt dependence. I can go into further detail in future comments if you wish. But govt created assistance creates more of these problems as opposed to resolving the current ones.

Which was 18 years after she passed. But a year or two before she passed, she moved into a senior living apartment building that only charged her 30% of her income and no utilities. She moved out to take care of grandchild that went into foster care. It was the first time in her life that she’d ever lived alone once her grandchild got re-homed (because a child can’t live in senior living). I’m 72 and live in Hawaii, one of the most expensive states in the US. I was fortunate enough and I was married to buy a small house in the country. It’s not the country anymore but the house is worth eight times more than I paid for it. I only get $800 in Social Security because I raised my four children and didn’t work until they were out of high school. Don't let people brush you off by telling you there is no section 8. They've changed the name to "Housing choice voucher" system. You pay 30% of your income towards rent. Better than being homeless for years and waiting for "affordable" housing.

@mschief-central4940
@mschief-central4940 Жыл бұрын
@Lolo our city is opening the lottery for vouchers this month for 10,000. First time it’s been open in about 12 years. 2 to 3 year wait to find out if you’re one of the semi-lucky to get a voucher. Then there’s a very set time limit to find a landlord willing to accept the voucher at all, or longer than a year. Also, ours you have to stay in the area for a year before you can try to transfer it. If you still qualify. Single disabled and seniors are at the very bottom of the voucher list, so there’s a real good chance they’ll never get a voucher. HUD based 62+ low income housing exists, but the waitlists are 4+ years long. And the buildings, most of them, aren’t good. Cosmetically they may look okay, but they’re plagued with plumbing problems, roaches, bedbugs, our building even rats. And this is one of the better buildings. I do what I can to keep vermin out, but not all my neighbors do. Maintenance is a joke, and I’m nowhere near strong enough or have the money to do some proper repairs on my own.

In many cities you need the political support locally of politicians to access section 8. There is a huge backlog of applicants no matter where you go. Church social organizations(Catholic and Lutheran) use section 8 to help .new immigrants coming over the border in past 2 years. They have priority because they are working for HUD, per the president to find housing for these 10 million new immigrants. Mostly on the border but even Denver is finding their home market drying up.

The cost of moving isn't cost prohibitive. I'm stuck living in an extremely expensive area in Oregon and when I moved here the cost of renting an apartment was very low. Now people can't afford to live here unless they cram multiple unrelated people into living in one dwelling. Just renting a room in a house full of people is around $1200 to $1400 a month. At least she's not living out of her car, like a LOT of senior Arizonans are forced to do, but she's got to give up the expense of owning a car to keep affording her rent! I don't understand why our government can't do more. Is it too much to ask that there be a rent cap on housing for low-income people 60 or over? Thank you, Big Super, for opening our eyes to what's really going on here in Arizona. This is NOT the place to come to retire, that's for sure.

@@eckankar7756 she like many people lived in a mobile home in an excellent situation. On her sisters property. However, other people worked hard and purchased mobile homes in RV parks but have found themselves in dire straits because the Parks are being sold by Mom & Pop owners and bought up by large commercial management companies, who immediately raise the lot fees. Unfortunately, the owners cannot move the Mobile homes/RV's because parks will not take the older models. Many Seniors are caught between a rock and the homeless tent city. 😢

@@evaallen9728 the 55+ park in my neighborhood that I wanted to get into raised it's lot rents from $650 a month to $1050 a month. That plus the price of buying the home on the lot is too expensive for most seniors. And no guarantee that the lot rents won't go up next year a big amount.

This type of living for Seniors shouldn't' take all their money. Seniors should get some kind of governmental assistance of half the rents up to $500. month. Stop sending our money overseas. Veterans should get the same help with rent. Please

you have no idea, apt rents just skyrocketed these past two years. In my area, a mid-sized town of 50K, studio apts are starting at about $1200 and go to about $1500. One bedrooms (as small as 500 sf) start at about $1400 and go to $1800. No utilities included except for garbage and water. That's just the way it is across the country.

I agree... My studio apartment was a hotel,too a real estate developer bought it and switched it into apartment complex, i pay $840 a month( everything is included) i break it down and i actually pay $690 a month for the room the rest ($150) are cable's, internet, water, sewer and garbage.. They seem to have a good deal with cable and with electric company. Because at my old apartment basic cable alone was over $80/ month, i didn't own cable for awhile because of that.

Good luck to the lady in the video, she is safe, has food and lives within her means and is so positive.

Bless her heart. And you were so kind and genuinely compassionate towards her, bless you too. I know her story all too well. I'm 66 and disabled but only get $900 a month on social security. I live in Seattle, (have been here all my life), and it's a 15+ year wait for subsidized housing here for people like me. The addict gets housing much quicker. I've been battling homelessness since 2011. As of now I rent a teeny, tiny room in house from an alcoholic. It has no heat, no hot water and no functioning kitchen. But it's better than living in my car, which I did more than a few times and also the shelters. I just can't afford anything else. Praying this woman and her cute dog can live there in comfort for as long as she needs it.

She seems really pleased with her situation, all things considered. I’m 61 and I’m shocked to see someone only a few years older than me look so much older than me. I have osteoporosis and I noticed the hump on this sweet woman’s back. She has a form of arthritis called kyphosis. She seems to be coping with it well, but she probably doesn’t have a choice. She’s obviously missing teeth, because she doesn’t have the money to correct the loss. But her disposition was so positive and she knows her accommodations could be worse and more expensive, so she’s chosen to be positive about it, which is very commendable. I’m thrilled that she has a dog to be a companion to her, and I loved her a little fireplace that brings her joy. thank you for highlighting the plight of millions of people in the US and don’t have the care they need. I’m glad that our government provides her with Social Security and medical health treatment. I wish it could be more, so she could have better health care. She’s had a lot of loss with her sister and her husband. She mentioned a brother, but didn’t elaborate. I just can’t get over the fact that she’s only 68. God bless her. 🙏
