A Spaniard in California here. I do understand that for the sun many people love the South of Spain. I am from Asturias which is the Northern most region of Spain and I think that for many Canadians may also be interesting to check the North. You have the bad 4 months of Winter weather (Nothing compared to Ottawa) but the rest of the year it is like paradise and it is rare than in the Summer time reaches 30 Celsius. Lately I am very surprised how many people from the South are now buying properties in the North (Specially wealthy people). The other issue it is that it is up to maybe 30% (Properties and cost of living) less expensive than your area. Your home is beautiful and it is also a very nice area and of course the Mediterranean has a special allure that it is hard to find somewhere else. My suggestion is for people that doesn't have a big income or a big retirement plan. You guys are a cute couple!.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! 🥰 We've heard so many good things about the north of Spain (food, weather, cost of living) and we can't wait to visit (we plan on doing the Camino De Santiago - so looking forward to that)!! I would love a house in the campo (that is my dream) so you know know where we end up in Spain! 😜

I honestly can tell you that from 50,000 to 70,000 Euros (To fix them up in the way you want it) you can buy a very nice stone wall houses nearby cities with the mountains and the sea within close range (Picos de Europa is the closest mountain range to the sea of all Continental Europe, 28 Km). I want to do the Camino de Santiago with my kids, especially the Camino del Norte that will take us along from Irun in the border with France all the way to the Coast to Ribadeo (Border between Galicia and Asturias) to veer into the interior of Galicia to finish in Santiago de Compostela. I already built my home in Asturias and I bought 2 other properties to fix them (During my retirement) and leave it to my kids. I will never forget how gracious, warm and kind were the Canadian people to me when I visited Vancouver, Victoria BC few years ago.@@livinlavidacosta

That is a beautiful town house and in truth, that is really all any couple needs. As you said, Spaniards do not live inside their homes all day. They mainly use their houses for sleeping after being out all night, or for siesta when the sun is too hot to be outside. Other than that, Spanish people spend nearly all of their time outside their homes either working, gathering socially, traveling, going to the beach, etc. I really loved that about Spain/Portugal and other parts of southern Europe, and find it to be very similar when I spend time in the Philippines and some parts of Asia, although it's slowly changing because of western ex pats. Back home in the US and Canada, people need larger houses because they mostly live their lives inside their homes. I think for being 400 meters from the ocean in Spain, the cost is very reasonable! I assume the total cost of 164k euros included the renovations? Well done!

@rabukan5842 Thank you so much! 🥰 It's so true, we don't need anything bigger as we spend 95% of our time outside! Even when we are hone, we are sitting outside on our front terrace! (P.S. we paid extra for the renos). 😊

Oh my gosh, Ola, Angela & Sante! -My husband, Peter and myself (both 56), originally from NS but living in Alberta until Peter's retirmeent in 4 years...have seriously been thinking of doing a "hyrbrid" Lifestyle approach when he retires. -We long to be near our 4 children for 6 months and so we do wish to spend 6 months in Nova Scotia and then 6 months "elsewhere". I know this seems premature, as we do still have 4 years to wait, but some really amazing news came our way...I am discovering through one of our sons (a History reserarcher to be sure) that I am actually a dual citezen of Germany! -Apparently, my grandfather naturalized to Canada in 1927 but my dad was born in 1919! Proving this through very old documents is very difficult, but somehow, my son is doing it! -The process for an official visa for me will likely take 2 years...but I can't help wondering what this potential could do as far as being allowed to reside in Spain if we wanted to, for that other 6 months, every year! -Even buying a home! -Not sure if we'd have to stay in Germany and prove residency there or if our EU status could allow us to basically pay taxes in Germany but live elsewhere?? -If you know anything of this, please let me know! -In the meantime, please know Angela & Sante, that you are definately inspiring us! -As Albertans currently, we are blessed to have really great healthcare and as you may know, Nova Scotia is in a quandery. I wrote to NS Health and they informed me that it is likely that we may never have a doctor if we move back...yet another serious reason to not move back there on a full time basis. -Certainly, we can keep our Alberta status and just live here from Nov-April every year (b/c we'd want to have the best months by the ocean at home in NS!), but if we can live aborad for 6 months every year and if it can still be Spain although I'd have dual citizenship with Germany...why wouldn't we consider it, right?! If this all comes to fruition, I so hope I can kindly ask you both who excatly your Law firm is/was, just because we really want to do things with exceptional guidance. -It is early. We are 4 years away, until my husband retires from education (principal). We both sincerely appreciate the videos you are making on this topic, because you are soooo right about the state of Canada currently...it is simply becomming "unbreathable"...at every turn, Canadians are stiffled with the atrocious cost of living from every corner. It is truly time to become creative on what can work for families (and our 4 beautiful children are all grown and on their own) and to continue to create our own adventures, options and opportunities! Thank you so very much for what you're doing and maybe one day, we'll sit and have a tea. -Maybe I need to get busy on duo lingo too, right? 😂 My only issue is I'm hoping the German connection can be an asset to live in Spain. (We do really want to explore Germany tho'-no doubt!). We're two snowbirds wanting a very warm nest! haha! God Bless & thank you for reading!❤

That's exactly why we started this channel, to inspire others! 🙌 We've come to realize just how much better life can be in a country like Spain, especially as we approach retirement. We've been directing a lot of people to our tax lawyer who is from Montreal but practices in Barcelona. She was a godsend to us! I can give you her details (email livinlavidacosta@gmail.com). It's actually very unusual to find a washing machine in a Spanish kitchen as they're usually tucked away in or around a bathroom or outside as with your water heater. Great video, by the way.
@livinlavidacosta
@livinlavidacosta 6 ай бұрын
Yes, we've seen that, too! I guess it just depends on the size of the kitchen and whether or not there's enough space for a washing machine in the kitchen. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks so much for watching!! 🥰

@@livinlavidacosta It's actually more of a cultural thing. Our Spanish friends & neighbours explained to us that the traditional belief is that it's slightly odd to wash your dirty clothes in the same space you prep & cook your meals. Which...if you think about it, actually makes some sense.
@livinlavidacosta
@livinlavidacosta 6 ай бұрын
@@davewalkden7248 I get that, 💯!
@ializarg
@ializarg Ай бұрын
I think it's simpler than all that. Apart from an electrical connection, what does a washing machine need? A water inlet and a drain. And where is that in a house? In the kitchen and the bathroom. It's a way to save resources and apply logic. In addition, these spaces are already tiled and have ceramic floors to avoid problems if there are leaks or water losses. Curiously, in the countries of Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, etc.) they have opted to install them in many kitchens while the Nordic countries have opted to place them in the bathrooms. In fact, all washing machine brands offer models that can be paneled or integrated with the same doors as the kitchen cabinets, and you would never notice that there is a washing machine in the kitchen.

I really like the house but to have this for holiday home? There are too many houses side by side If this was in the US or Canada it would be fine that would be different but Spain seems like that everywhere close to the sea... You have masses of apartments just packed in near the beach. I prefer Italy much prettier and you can find really nice apartments right near the water for the same price but usually less. to me Italy just has a more holiday vibe like Scalia, Italy etc but it is a very nice home indeed
