I arrive at London Heathrow Airport for my first ever trip to Europe. Watch this video to see how I navigate from the airport to Central London via public transportation. I also go through immigration, customs, claim my luggage, and experience Severe Delays on the Elizabeth Line.

One reason for the long walk in the airport (which is true is a lot of the larger airports) is to give the workers there time to unload your luggage. If the walk was short, you would have had to wait 10-15 minutes at baggage claim until your luggage arrived. They actually researched this, and found out people reported a more positive experience with a longer walk (where they are doing something with some purpose) than when they just waited around for their luggage at baggage claim, doing nothing but getting more frustrated with the wait.

9:56 as someone that worked for Thameslink in London a few years ago, hearing someone talking about the TfL caps and getting a good strategy for using the Elizabeth Line (so the rest of your tubes and buses for that day are effectively free) warmed my heart. Nicely researched. I do recommend that people traveling in from overseas buy a Visitor's Oyster Card preloaded with funds for the week (Transport for London will mail it to you if you do it a few weeks ahead of time) so you can get straight through the barriers and onto that public transportation.

@@RWFAN184 - the Visitor version is only available for people buying it online from out of the country (£5, plus whatever amount you pre-load onto it). It looks different from any other Oyster Card, so it's a collector's item. And there are a load of restaurants and museum gift shops where you get a deal nobody else can get. Discounts off purchases, free drinks with the purchase of a regular a la carte meal when you show the Card. Things like that. My wife and I got way more than £5 worth of freebies each when we last went in 2018, and we still have the Oyster Card for the next time we go to London (where we can get even more discounts and freebies).

NYC subway fare gates work in both directions, hence our host's confusion. Depending on where you are going to in London the Piccadilly line can be about as fast as the Elizabeth line. The Elizabeth line and the Heathrow express use overhead wire power while all the tube trains use third rail power.

This shows how vast London Heathrow is! Never be fooled by the size of our small island in comparison to the USA - Heathrow is one of the busiest in the world! Glad you used public transport instead of UBER or a Taxi; the Airport is miles out of the City! The signs DID TELL YOU what the individual lifts/elevators were for. You can't get much clearer than 'Car Parks' 'Buses' and 'Taxis' with the bigger sign telling you where the lifts for 'Trains/Tube' were situated. Trust me when I tell you that flying into New York from the UK takes a damn sight longer just to clear Customs etc.

I would choose the Elizabeth line over the others. Nice and new and lots of trains. The Heathrow Express is longer than 15 mins and not as fast as the name suggests. I think your journey went pretty good. Busy times are the morning commute and evening. Nice to see it through non UK eyes too. Thanks for sharing.

Heathrow Express is also a privately owned line, thats why its more expensive. It was the first rail connection to the airport with the tube connections and Elizabeth line coming along later. In some ways though what would be fastest and most conveniant depends which terminal your plane arrives at.

The only indication that a service may be delayed is shown at 29:55. Wish they publish the status of the Underground, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth somewhere so that travellers have options. The Transport for London (TfL) website is a good indicator and updates every 30 seconds, but how about those going to the UK temporarily who's phone is not capable of using internet/phone calls outside the country of residence. Clearly out of all the TFL lines (including Overground, DLR and Elizabeth but excluding buses), the Elizabeth is the one which expeirenced the most unplanned delays/cancellations. But most importantly, I love that this shows an indication of how long it would take from entering the airport to London which includes a 10 minute stop but excludes passport control.

Just to point out that what you referred to as "Customs" is known as Immigration/Passport Control in the UK (and much of the rest of the world outside of the US). It's the part of the process that's concerned with who's coming in to the country. Customs is concerned with what you're bringing in to the country, and is the area where you choose between the red (goods to declare) or green (nothing to declare, but you may get singled out for a random search) channels.

Hi AK, if you're interested in a interesting walk along the Southbank you could start at the end of Tooley st in Bermondsey Se1 walk down Shad Thames which will take you under Tower bridge and then follow the Thames path to Battersea Park and finish the walk by the Chinese pakoda. It's a bit of a long walk but I'm sure you will manage it, best done at the weekend during the day, the Southbank Centre would be a great place to stop for lunch.

Long past trip to London, highlights were a boat ride down the Thames to Greenwich for a walk around. Also a day trip to Bath. October and days were a little longer than now. I took the tubes or busses and a couple of night went across London back from a late night in the East End, to Earl's Court area, by night bus. One great sight I loved but did not plan, was going S thu Hyde Park, passing Albert Memorial at twilight, then around the Albert Hall and in Knightsbridge to pass Harrods.

The Elizabeth line is a regular line and the same as all the others in the tube system. Because when it was built it used pre-existing tunnels belonging to a private company, that company charges for its use. This charge gets passed on to passengers as a surcharge - hence the higher than usual fare. Nowhere else in the tube system does this happen.

That's pretty quick really - on the train in 40 minutes. Immigration can take MUCH longer if you arrive at a busy time and it's not uncommon to wait an hour for your bag too. I thought that was a pretty good advert for Heathrow, overall. I think he was just unlucky to arrive at the furthest gate from the baggage claim. The walking distances are long because it's a 70+ year old airport that's been remodelled many times. We don't tend to just demolish everything and start again like in the US although terminal 2 is totally new. The train station serves three different terminals (well only two at the moment) from one station so it's not directly situated in ANY of them. Also as new lines are added they naturally have to be built deeper/further away - it's no coincidence that he came to the Underground first!

If you ever need to travel to and from London Gatwick Airport and London Victoria Station don't take the Gatwick Express as it is more expensive than other normal 'Southern' trains and the journey is almost just as speedy by them. You can then also change at Clapham Junction for many other stations including London Waterloo so depending on your destination it could be just as quick or even quicker too. You can also get a Thameslink train to London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon, and Kings Cross/Saint Pancras and beyond direct from Gatwick. Again depending on your destination you may find this route more suitable for your needs.

If you ever return and you have a particular interest in London's trains visit the London Transport Museum (closest station Covet Garden on the Picadilly Line.) Visited the UK first time last year, fortunately have a friend who lives there and was able to guide me through all the intricacies of using public transport. There is a lot to take in when you’ve never seen such a broad range of public transport. I will say one of the things that threw me off about using the lifts is the numbering system. It is different than in the U. S. What would be listed as a ground floor or number 1 here is typically numbered zero and anything down below that they use a negative number. I also went to Germany through Brussels and realized that is how Europe works. One of many different things you need to learn when you’re traveling abroad out of United States. I ended up traveling both directions through terminal 5 and it is much easier to get in and out of the airport through the terminal on rail.

I love your trip reports. They are very informative. Did you change to the new Pocket 3 camera ? Thank you for this extremely helpfull video in this extremely complicated terminal. I wonder how elderly passengers can walk to public transport, while need to cover such distances.. Terrible terminal, really.

When I was at Heathrow Airport many years ago I saw Troy Aikman who was the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. I've been to the United Kingdom twice. The first time was in 2000 and again in 2004. What I remember about our visit to a British pub is the cigarette smoke being very thick. There is another airport in London that I have been to which I believe is called Gatwick.

It’s one of two airports that serve the states. Most English travelers use Gatwick Airport as the alternative. Heathrow Airport is more of a big trip and for business while gatwick is more for vacationing tourists. Gatwick also has direct flights to Orlando and Miami.

Planes fly to the states from most UK international airports. The Heathrow to JFK route is very restricted in terms of airlines on account of it being the most profitable air bridge in the world.

In Singapore, Changi Airport, if your arrival gate is at the end of the terminal, it is also a long walk to the passport control. But there are small trolleys usually left around by departing passengers and not retrieved, which you can grab and use it.

I know you're implying we can use the trollies for our luggage, but I like to imagine grabbing one of the trollies, running very fast, and jumping on, letting the momentum carry me all the way to passport control, where I'll promptly be detained for not listening to the security guard who told me to call it off

You got off easy with the walk to Customs and Reclaim. At Paris-CDG, Terminal,2 is subdivided into what feels like several smaller terminals. You may clear Passport Control where you land, but all baggage is brought to Terminal 2a, so you’re herded in that direction and may have to board a people-mover/light rail vehicle.

I enjoyed your video. I actually live in the UK. But you have me confused about getting a refund on your train.....your train wasn't delayed!! Your train actually got in well before it was due, having missed out all those stations in between!! There wasn't any delay. The train that was delayed was the one that actually overtook you at one point. It had to stop at all stations and got in later than your train which didn't stop....so you weren't delayed. If anything.. you were early in getting into Paddington!!

Nice video on showing us how to travel from Heathrow. Your right it's not as straightforward especially if you are from other country. Yeah calling is the English way of saying stopping and the Elizabeth line does share the same tracks as Heathrow Express. Good thing the train itself is branded and the customer service information is good. Airports tend to take long walks and Heathrow is no different. I hope you enjoy your time in London

I took the Picadilly Line straight from right outside Terminal 2 to Covent Garden for just $7.22 = £5.68 today. It took about 50-ish minutes. Soooo much nicer than gross, urine-smelling NYC subways. 😂 Edit: you're right about "things" not being so clear-cut, re finding where you need to go, I had to ask at least 3 people 3 different times, but thank goodness everyone that works there is so helpful and nice!

First time watching one of your vlogs. Good (vicarious) experience for other novices planning a similar trip. There are some harsh comments, (from one in particular), I hope you won't let that discourage you. You did miss some prominent signs though. One suggestion is to edit out periods of time where nothing is happening.

See this is the key difference between Heathrow and JFK..... both similar sizes, however Heathrow has fewer terminals = longer walk from / to gate, JFK has more terminals = shorter walk from / to gate, and is also why I prefer to fly from Gatwick rather than Heathrow. Yes as for transport, Heathrow Express (Same with the Gatwick one too!), is the most expensive option, but is very quick, but best option would be to use Elizabeth line or London Overground services, both part of the TfL fares system (You can also use the Underground, however it's pretty slow), so capped fares. As for the Elizabeth Line trains, these was built at the Bombardier (Now Alstom) site, next to Derby Train Station, which is just down the road from me.

That probably isn't any worse than flying into JFK and trying to get out of the airport on the AirTrain, especially if you're trying to get to Jamacia station to get on the Subway or LIRR. Heathrow Express and Liz Line don't use the same tracks once they're off the Heathrow spur line, once they're on the main line the Liz Line is routed onto the local track and Heathrow Express runs on the express track and gets slotted in between GWR inter-city trains so they don't hold up GWR (those green GWR inter-city trains run at 125mph the Heathrow express only runs at 110mph). They also use different platforms at Paddington, Liz Line has its own platforms with the screen doors, heathrow express shares the main platform area with GWR.

You got confused because it was your first time in London and you didn't know that there are different branches in the Elizabeth Line and Picadilly Line. So next time if you are visiting London, please memorize or familiarize the map so that you will know which direction you are going to and you will not do the same mistake ever again.
