The 420HC at Buck goes through a specialized hardening process that makes a Buck knife hold a better than traditional 420HC edge.

From watching your video, this is the first time I've ever gotten a knife shaving sharp! It is a Buck 110 , and I am so proud that I just shaved most of the hair off of my left arm and some off my right leg.😊

A sharpening service is a great idea! I know PLENTY of guys around my job and work area that carry a knife daily and have no idea how to sharpen or what sharp really is. Most just simply don't care enough. It's always rewarding to give a knife back to someone like that with a razor edge and listen to them go on and on about it.

Thanks Ryan! Glad we have your support :-) Once you return a knife to someone with a razor edge, you know you'll have their continued business. Once you use an edge like that, you cant go back!

My older brother had one in the 80s, I always loved it I picked one up at the big box store today for$34.99, made in the USA. Just like they used to be. It was a rough grind on the edge but about 20 minutes on the water stones and it was perfect! Yes, absolutely shaving sharp!

They are a classic knife for sure, my father always had one and I wanted one really bad so I had bought one I've carried it with me since then the other day I decided to date it, I got on the buck website I can't believe I've had it since 1993 so I looked at my dad's knife since I have his now because he has passed and his is dated somewhere between 74 and 1980 can't believe he carried it every day since then, hopefully you do the same

Just FYI I have two buck knives with the 420HC stainless steel blade and I use a Spyderco triangle sharpmaker then finish with a strop with green polish and able to get a hair whittling edge. I do agree that there are far superior steels out there but the 420HC is not soft or inferior by any means. That is if it's had the BOS heat treat from Buck the heat treat and tempering is very important and Buck has in down to a science.

Nice video. I have a 2006 110 and I like the weight (but not clip point blades). I usually carry a Gerber 06 Manual, Benchmade Adamas, Ganzo G720 (Lionsteel copy) or a Buck 110. I like heavy folders because they are intended for harder use with the full steel liners and striker pommel. I guess the 110’s bolster could be used as a pommel also. But heavy just means I know it’s there and I prefer the longer blade length on bigger folders. I am looking at Copper and Clad’s Aluminum bolster lightweight drop point 110 with pocket clip, DL Trading’s stainless steel bolster drop point in S35VN or the nickel silver bolster drop point in 20CV. But after owning the ‘super steels’ I don’t see the point anymore. 5160 in fixed blades and bos 420HC is all I need for the mountains. Plus ease of sharpening in the field! Love the fact that you two are exploring that entrepreneurial spirit and starting this business. How is it going?

I believe the wood on the buck 110 is ebony or polymer infused (Dymond Woo) ebony layers. Different woods and materials for the scales can be obtained thru the custom shop or thru special edition knives. Different blade metal s can also be ordered. The 420 HC is not ordinary 420. It goes thru BIS heat treatment hardening that increases hardness and edge hiding properties.

I have used a pro sharpening service to re-profile a factory grind that was too thick behind the edge. I use field sharpeners, so doing a heavy grind job is not something I enjoy doing. It's worth every penny to have somebody with the right tools do the heavy stuff that may take me hours to do on a small stone like a DC4. I love my Buck 110 too :-D

I thinned mine too thick near the edge I use an Arkansas stone for the final edge, shaving sharp with big handle able grip it 2 hands to split a deer chest along the breast one felt like pulling a big zipper as it went thru the cartilage I had temporarily lost my pukko.

The 110 I have is 36 years old and has rosewood scales. When it was newer, the wood looked identical to yours. The long delicate point has long since broken off, losing a 1/4 inch. I simply re-ground the tip. It's a bit stubby looking, but still my favorite knife.

Yeah 420HC is no good in a thin spines 110, in the beefier 119 and 120 fixed blade they have a spine .170” or 11/64” thick, so the tip with the clipped tip and swedge is actually beefier and more practical in terms of longevity and duty. Traytown/Glovertown 🤘🏻

Great question. I've feeling the apex, super lightly as to not cut myself. I want to see 1) if it feels the same the entire length of my edge (consistency along bevel) and 2) I am checking to see how much 'bite' the edge has. It takes awhile to get the feeling, but it's extremely valuable when you do. When you do happen to get a razor sharp edge, take some time and feel it. Get to know how a razor edge feels, so you'll know what to feel for in the future! :-)

If you can sharpen with water do it! I've sharpened with oil and it's very messy, took most of the enjoyment out of it for me.

yeah 420 is not a steel you want to create a burr on. Unless you intend to take it off with a buffing wheel or speed belt! haha

If you don't mind, I'd like to warn you to be careful when cleaning off the blades while sharpening. What you did at 6:57 is a great way to ruin the finish by scratching it with the slurry of steel particles and stone grit that the edge has built up. You could end up wiping it and scratching the blade.

Subbed! From a chef looking for Buck Knife motions on the stone. Good form. I will model mine. I'm guessing you're using a 20 degree angle? 15?

Also don't stroke your blade backwards on the stone. Always go against the edge. Or you will roll the blade and it won't hold the edge as long
