He wasn't "provoked" by anyone. He installed an app on his daughter's iPad so he could listen in on what was happening in his estranged wife's apartment, which is a massive invasion of privacy. Through HIS OWN ACTIONS, he heard a man's voice. He then decided to grab his gun, get in his car, drive to her apartment and kill her and her friend. But he didn’t cry during examination, although his family pictures were in front of him, because a psycho detaches himself from suffering a story and devotes his focus on telling a story as a news reporter with the most convenient and convincing details. That would put him at like 10-12 years in prison - probably 6-8 with good behavior, and he’s already been serving time so that would factor in to the small amount of time he would have actually gotten on a MS charge. I fully believe he and his lawyers convinced themselves that he’d be out in a short couple of years.
