Living in the UK, that was an amazing reception for Mark Gatiss that he would never get here in England, i think he was a little taken aback by the audiences appreciation for him. I was unaware that the BBC series Sherlock was even shown in India.

I think it's interesting to mention that the British brought the law to India which criminalised homosexuality in the first place. "Chapter XVI, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code dating back to 1860,[1] introduced during the British rule of India, criminalises sexual activities "against the order of nature", arguably including homosexual acts." Anyway, it's good Gatiss spoke so openly about the fact that being gay is still mostly a taboo in India theses days.

13:36 - "(Johnlock) is never going to happen..." Although Mark tends to troll fans as much as Steven, I believe him. As much as fans want an openly gay couple onscreen, Sherlock was never about advocating a particular agenda. It is about a deep male friendship that is rarely depicted onscreen. The show also avoids the usual stereotypes of onscreen male friendship:'manly' passive aggressive behaviour, discussing sexual conquests/competitiveness, binge drinking etc. Sherlock and John tend to miscommunicate their obvious affection for each other except in life or death/wedding situations. Its a very British thing they do.

Do you think he would come to promote his history-changing show to a country where homosexuality is a crime, saying that Sherlock and John are in fact going to be a romantic couple in the end? India wouldn't buy it if he said so. No biggie, he and Moffat are used to lie all the time anyway to protect their secret. Johnlock is endgame and the plot doesn't make sense without it. These man would never make their loved show 'just a cheap gay joke'. They're tired of that in the media. They've said several times they want to 'fix' the canon, and that's exactly what they've been doing since 2010. Just wait and see. :)

justgoodies But if the show's "fixed" endgame turns out not to be John/Sherlock, will there be riots on tumblr? What if the endgame is exploring Sherlock's past and what made him who he is? Even if he is suppressing feelings for John through drugs, there has to be resolution with the man who is "married to his work". Even if Mary was somehow removed from the equation, who is to say John would not marry another woman as in the original stories? My point is that another series/movie could explore the John/Sherlock angle in their version. I just doubt that Steven and Mark have it as their endgame given their penchant for red herrings.

Those are very interesting points you mentioned. I understand, and believe me, I used to think exactly like you. But when you get to make sense of the plot and join that to the creators' many comments on it over the years since they started this, you realize this is a very long, very well thought out plan of theirs, to be the first adaptation that dares to aknowledge Sherlock and John are romantically involved, and always had been in their eyes. Which does not diminish the importance of finally knowing what made Sherlock who he is and exploring the character's past, in fact, I think that is exactly the point. I think when they hear "I want Johnlock to happen!!" they inmediately think of the tons of Johnlock porn floting around tumblr. That's never gonna happen. It's about them being soulmates, best friends, life partners. The problem is queerness is so sexualized, and good for them to debunk that stereotype on their way as well. We could be talking for hours about the specifics of the show, and how we know Mary is a villain and a romantic false lead, and a lot more, but I recommend you finding the fandom in tumblr and read some of the meta there is, it's eye opening, and so logical. Believe me, as a casual viewer/moderate fan, I used to ship Sherlolly, honestly, I think that says it all... but after /years/ of analyzing this show frame by frame I am convinced this is where they're going.
