I know it's a pain in the rear but thank you for saving that old washer from the washer graveyard. I really miss the appliances of the 70's and 80's that worked well, got the job done, weren't overly computerized, and didn't take over an hour to do it with all the starting and stopping and load sensing.

Yep...... a belt-drive Whirlpool (finally). These things are workhorses I grew up with three of these (all Kenmores), and every last one of them lasted at least 10 years before breaking down (a 1967 Kenmore Single-Speed - 11 Years, a 1978 Kenmore Model 70 - still working before moving out in 1987, and a 1967 Kenmore Model 600 - in my new apartment, that lasted 23 years before dying in 1990). The build and craftsmanship of these were second to none. 👍🏾👍🏾 -Charles-

Used to rebuild transmissions and replace spin bearings in these machines when I first started appliance repair. Still have the tools for pulling and pressing in bearings. May have to spray some acitone on the clutch pad. Definitely a blast from the past , very seldom see one still working

I had a 1978 belted Whirlpool washer-that thing was awesome! It also had the Double Duty winged Super Surgilator-and the waterfall lint filter (bed-of-nails). The woo-woo sound and the grind-click-clunk and the pulsating breathing when the water was all drained out-it did all of that! It was a sad day when Whirlpool stopped making them.

Wow this Washer actually did an excellent job even handling that heavy load of pants that you put in there. I hate to say it but it outshined many of the newer machines that you tested. Never heard you complain about how difficult the repair was so It really had to be bad because you never stress like that. Either way job extremely well done this washer will last God knows how long unless the body gives out. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

These machines were about the price of a Filter Flo at the time but cleaned so much better. I also put the quality up about as high as their contemporary Maytag and Speed Queen competitors but they even performed better than those. True workhorses. My parents had them at home and dad had one in his factory for employee uniforms that sat on a wooden skid at a twenty degree angle towards the timer that lasted over twenty five years and still ran well when we sold the building. All of ours had the filters with the brush which doubled as a detergent dispenser.

Good machines and yes it was trial at times to repair. Full restorations weren’t a thing when they were new to newer of course. Transmission removal was rare but I did happen occasionally under major failure, but when it did happen you had the routine down and on your side. Certainly today it’s a different world when it comes to diagnosis and repair. But transmissions were well in their life spans when I had to deal with them. But in this era repairing was quite fun and frustrating all at the same time. 👍👍

I currently am in the process of putting my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII back together and I can see where you are coming from since they aren't the easiest machines in the world to work on. Good news is they don't have to be repaired as often, but changing a belt can be a little cumbersome since you have to lay the machine on its side to replace the belt or even pump and the only repairs my '63 Whirlpool washer ever had was having the belt and pump replaced and that was done sometime in the late 90's since there is a date code of 2-3-98 on the pump.

Our first Whirlpool was an early 70's model with the waterfall brush lint filter. It was a fantastic machine! Unfortunately, it rusted out prematurely, because of an extremely damp basement. I bought another WP BD machine in the mid 80's It push buttons for the water temp, infinite water level control, double duty surgilator.

Eugene, I am the blind KZbin viewer who got in touch with you about old-time whirlpool washing machines from the 1970s. Granted, this was the 1981 machine: however, it is a lot closer to the kind of washing machines that I preferred in my formative years. As to the sound that it made what it was spinning, I guarantee you that that was metal touching metal: not even the slightest doubt about it. In so far as the spin speed is concerned, according to my very accurate memory of those old machines, on the second spin, that machine was in fact achieving its full spin rate. Not so much on the first spin. Indeed, the first spoon seem to have a good deal of trouble keeping up to almost about 2/3 of its proper maximum rate. It seemed to me that the spray rinse was slowing you down quite a bit. But, on the second spin, much better. I don’t mind admitting, that I wish you could actually find a whirlpool washing machine dating from anywhere from 1965 through 1971 and could show it in working condition. But, that may be a bit much to ask I suppose. Still, this one came quite close. I Donely right, keep up the good work, happy new year, and stay safe.

Awesome! If I had to guess this is 500 rpm which I believe was the maximum for these. I will agree, kinda slow if you think about it. It's ironic when you remember top load machines built decades before this had much faster spin speeds (especially the Unimatics with 1,140 rpm). Nowadays the fastest toploaders you get are LGs that do 950 rpm maximum.

Oh… okay. So one, my 77 Inglis belt drive portable tub moves around just about as much as this does, nice to know that’s normal. Second, glad to know I have a surgilator-style agitator in my Inglis - didn’t realize that’s what it was. And my little Inglis spins at 900RPM! Clothes come out almost dry. Funny enough that’s my same lint filter, albeit mine is slightly smaller.

I know 👌 I may sound nuts, but I have a concern 😟 at 23:03. I heard 👂 ya say ya got oil 🛢 on the clutch of this machine. I heard 👂 the motor labor a littleas it went into the spin cycle. I saw 👀 ya start the machine by hand ✋. The oil will probably never really work it's way out of the clutch, but probably impregnate, and soak it's way into the clutch material instead. The machine had quite a difficult time starting 🌟. I saw 👀 that ya assisted it by hand ✋, but I'd be so afraid 😨 of this causing premature clutch wear, and failure, or motor burnout 🔥, must ya forget. The second spin cycle went better, but I'd still supervise the operations of this machine. Your friend, Jeff.
