Nice grab ! These KitchenAid washers were Whirlpool's top of the line premium machines. That has a lot of Chrome on there for 1989. I remember wanting one of these at that time.

I have a 1980-something Whirlpool direct-drive washer that is still 100% original. The cam dogs on the dual-action agitator need replacing, (which I just need to stop being lazy and do!), but otherwise it is a PERFECT washer. I've been told that, whenever it does give up the ghost, if I spend about $250-$300 for a complete rebuild, (which should take all of about 2-3 hours max. and parts are still readily available), this machine will run for at least another 30+ years. No way I'm ever buying a new piece of crap machine. I love this old Whirlpool direct-drive behemoth! :)

I have the same model. KitchenAids of that vintage have an oversized agitator with a larger base and fins. Mid and upper models like this one with 3-speed motors (high, low, ex-low), the motor runs at low speed (not high speed) for High/Normal agitation. Ex-low motor speed is used for Low agitation. High motor speed is run only during neutral drain and High spin. This model has the stepped-spin feature which begins spin at a lower speed for a couple minutes then switches to faster speed. The final spin on Permanent Press runs two mins at each of the three motor speeds. Regular/Heavy final spin is two mins at low, 4 mins at high.

I was lucky, found a Speed Queen manual control top loader for sale in a rural area close to the suburb I live in. Turns out the family selling the washer uses well water exclusively and this older style washer used too much water during drought conditions that occur every so often out there. They bought a new high efficiency machine and decided to sell this one which only had a couple years of use on it. That was seven years ago and it's still working perfectly.
@benhall8946 Жыл бұрын
100% truth I scrap a lot and I had a bunch of washing machines that was newer I jumped those but the older ones I kept and people ask me why did I keep them and the reason that I kept them is because the well-built well-made stuff that was made back in the day should not be scrapped if you take that old stuff and you destroy it and it melted down and turned into new junk that they have today then no good stuff will be left like for example a washing machine like that might last you between 30 and 50 years a new washing machine last about three years so I just think it's important to keep old things around

Damn, an old school washer that, you know, FILLS THE DRUM WITH WATER to WASH YOUR CLOTHES! The old school washers were pure mechanical tanks; the new HE washers - without the counter weights to stabilize them - will shake themselves apart during the spin cycle!

I completely agree those Whirlpool made vintage machines are wonderful, but the 8 minute wash time you are seeing on the lid is just the time the machine agitates the clothing (the wash portion of the cycle), the fill drain spin and rinse times aren't listed. The entire Normal cycle is about 30 minutes.

The good things about new machines are, they take on larger loads like king comforter. They spin items to super dry so the dryer finish it’s work with less energy. I still don’t like the new machines, they wash items in minimum dirty water. How can laundry comes out clean?
@wyzemann6 ай бұрын
When using the proper amount of HE detergent, it will trap the dirt and oils from the dirty laundry. Excess water usage is no longer necessary with modern detergents and HE washers. Also, DO NOT pack your washer with clothes, no matter how large the capacity. Filling any washer to the brim will eventually lead to premature death or malfunction.

First of all you are comparing about of 10 minutes time, but is only for the washing cycle, whereas the 50 minutes is for the complete cycle that includes spin and rinse. In addition, the efficiency is that the vintage washing machine consumes about 600 W in the spin while the Maytag consumes 80 W. and even the spin is better, it leaves clothes drier in less time, the new washing machines do not have a transmission, only 2 cheap plastic gears very easy and quick to remove, whereas the vintage ones have complex and expensive transmissions that were full of oil and the most important parts of that transmission are plastic where it wears out fast and it is very complex and expensive to replace you have to remove the transmission (Big Deal) open it (it usually comes sealed cover with rivets that you have to destroy them using a drill ) take out the oil and change it get the affected parts including bearings and seals $$$$ install them close and reseal the transmission cover to perfection to avoid oil leakage, instead the new washing machines without, bearings, covers, gears, gaskets, oil and more ..... I agree that old washing machines last longer but also when they fail it costs a lot of money to fix.
