It’s really hard to see anything on your skin. The lighting is very blown out, and the high contrast with the background makes it worse. It makes your skin look lovely and perfect, but it’s not good for seeing what a foundation looks like. The depth of field is also so shallow that you have bokeh on the perimeter of your face, blurring your skin.

Thank you for the feedback. I will see if I can lower the lights or the ISO to give more detail. I have only been filming for a year now and am completely self taught so there are a lot of holes in my knowledge for sure. This time last year I was still just on an iphone and got my first real camera in September so definitely a huge learning curve. The lense I have that is so pretty and bokeh'd is a fixed 50mm so I do struggle a little with getting the focus right. It's tough because the artist in me loves the dreamy flattering bokeh effect but you're right it doesn't lend itself to showing the less flattering details that frankly you do want to see in a foundation review. I have noticed the background makes a difference too so maybe I can play more with those since I have a ton of them. Anyway, thanks for the feedback as I do want to show how the foundation performs ultimately and it sounds like that is not getting across with my current set up.

@@redgirlreviewsno problem. It does look lovely and dreamy, it just also blurs your skin. You can set your depth of field higher (I’m guessing this is a 1.8f lens?). The depth of field (aka f stop) isn’t fixed, just the focal length (aka the mm measurement, in this case 50).

@@vsm6847 thx! I will try that. I had it set to f1.2 so VERY bokeh. I’ll keep moving that up until I find a happy medium. Just filmed another foundation review with a mix of f1.8, lower lights/iso and a gray background for the skin application part so I’ll be curious to see if that comes across better. Feedback appreciated!

I have dry skin, and I absolutely love this foundation. I’m 46 and have been looking for a foundation that does not need setting, for me using this product without powder gives optimal performance. I also want the full coverage without it looking Cakey and textured. I have textured skin, and blemishes that need to be covered, this foundation does it for me, and the longevity of the product is a plus. I use it as it is, and it really does exactly what it says, I absolutely love it!

Totally agree! This one really performs totally differently than most mattifying foundations. I love how thin it is and how it sets!

Please lower the ISO or the light so we see how the foundation truely looks like on your skin (as well as your textured skin).

Thx for the feedback 👍🏻 am still learning as this is my first camera and just got it in September. I spent forever setting up the lighting/camera so my skin looked nice for product shorts and now I need to undo some of that without being underlit 🤔

Also can you see the texture in the iPhone videos up close or am I being too hard on myself calling that textured skin? I’ve had bad acne for so much of my life that now that I’m fixing it I’m still sensitive to anything showing on my face even though it’s so much better now after Accutane.

Oily skin is usually a sign of dehydration. Your skin is overcompensating for the lack of moisture. Its truly important especially in our 40s on to have full 5-6 glasses of water.

That’s some of it but I do moisturize like crazy and keep hydrated. Dr. Dray has a great video about this. It can be made worse by over drying your skin but it’s usually more of an effect of your genetics and hormones which it definitely is in my case unfortunately. When I was on Accutane my skin was extremely dry but never oily as a result. The vitamin A turned off my oil glands (which is what made me dry) and cured my sebaceous hyperplasias which was a result of just turning off genetically overactive oil glands for me. That over activity is also what has caused me to deal with clogged pores and hormonal acne my whole life unfortunately. On the flip side, it has kept my skin looking a bit younger over the years…I think I’d trade that for balanced skin though, I hate the oiliness! Good news is once I’m done with menopause and my hormones lower and level out it should naturally get better as most of this is hormonal based for me and that’s why it’s gotten worse as I get closer to menopause and my hormones are swinging wildly and giving me so much grief right now.

@@redgirlreviews I’m 56 and my skin was oily and I thank god for that. It does keep the wrinkles away. After menopause it turned dryer but not horribly so, but I also started drinking a lot of water at the same time so I think my hormones and water balanced my skin. I actually add oil back now with face oils. We are all so chemically unique. You look amazing and healthy.

You're right, it'd be so much easier if we all reacted to treatments etc. the same but we are all wonderfully different. ;-) After my hysterectomy my ovaries kicked back in and were making things terrible for me with the hormone swings and became cystic so now I'm on a progestin only birth control pill (oh the irony) now to stop the ovulation most months and that is helping my skin some too...really can't wait to be through this roller coaster but have a ways to go yet! I love talking to women on the other end of the meno process to help get me through this hard part by giving me hope! Unfortunately my mom died at 54 of gall bladder/liver cancer related to using premarin after her hysterectomy so I have no reference for what to expect as she never went through a normal menopause having had everything removed at 44 and then being put on premarin from there on out.

hmm I will go swatch it again but I did try it back when it first came out and ended up returning it because I think it ended up looking too greasy on me. Maybe I can get some samples from Sephora to try again ;-)

Welcome! Yes, it is a little bit less common that us over 40's are still oily and it is just such a challenging skin type especially when it starts to coincide with aging skin issues...fun! I think you'll like this one as an oily skin person. Thanks for the feedback on the video being too bright too. I just filmed the ABH stick one and tried bringing back the lights and bokeh a bit so hopefully the next one will be better. ;-)

I prefer using brushes too for foundation I just use the sponge to remove excess foundation. It’s great to know the first shade is too light for you as I thought you are the palest of pales at least on camera 😂

Yep! The lights do make me look a little paler as they are so bright. In natural light I do have to say I'm usually the second to lightest shade if it has a really pale shade range. My daughter is the palest shade though and usually gets my 'too light' shades. 😅 Also, if it is a matte formula, too white is extra ghosty looking versus a skin tint which I can usually pull off the lightest shade.

@@lindsey3707 OK I was wondering about that...I thought for sure I'd heard you talking about needing olive undertone foundations on your channel esp. with the about face foundation but my bad! 😅 They have a great color range on this one so I'm sure you'll find your color easily. I'm tempted to go back and try the F4 Cool undertone (next darkest up in the cool tones but it seems dark...the neutral F2 seemed too orange for me) since my super pale daughter already stole this one from me though 🤣
