The Ford Barra engine is currently one of the most popular engines when it comes to build projects, they are cheap and love that turbo boost. Leigh Walker of Pro Street Development shows us is current project and how he has come up with a solution in fitting it to a mid mounted Ultima GTR chassis. With 1500hp worth of engine in a sub 1000kg vehicle the power to weight will be outrageous.

Damn I wish we could say that about Canada it’s the one motor in the world I would trade my Windsor for I’m not sure how well it would fit in a fox body as far as length but where there’s a will there’s a way and where there’s a blower there’s boost and I’ve got both but sadly I haven’t got a Barra

We will have a few new videos of the rotary valve coming up soon . Full boost will have the full story and our engine we have that we built . Have a few new ones done . Even have a rotary valve cylinder head for the Barra in the works soon

Getting the approval first for the Vin/ID plate is a huge step, and doing it first makes it quicker overall.

A lot of the cars built in the UK were fitted with small block Chevs there was a model designation 720 R which was 720 hp . Later cars seemed to largely favour the Chev LS series .

I just marvel at these talented guys that seem to be wired differently to almost all others where they seem to be able to turn their mind to overcome all challenges .The skills and knowledge required across a wide range of mechanical engineering disciplines to build what he's doing is just mind blowing..Thanks FB for showcasing such an incredible man and his machine..

Most Caterhams are live-axle, and nobody's ever said they don't handle.

Caterhams are light, which helps compensate for the live axle setup.

@@sepg5084 Hmm yes, there's magic fairy dust which magically makes "solid axles handle fine if the the car is light enough". Or, with the right engineering, a solid axle can be made to perform damn near as good as IRS with the right tech and tuning.

@Kris Nicholson Aussie V8 Supercars used live axle rear suspension right up until 2015, iirc. Some of the fastest tin-tops on Earth. NASCARs switched to IRS for the first time this year, didn't they? Live axles CAN be made to handle very well, with a properly setup multi-link suspension and springs and dampers.

I found having a good engineer on board at the beginning makes things easier, I’m currently doing a full VT running gear including cradles into a suzuki vitara and my engineer has gone above an beyond to help me out an show me some things I may have never thought about… love the build so unique 👌

@@sexyfacenation cradle/ subframe so used the front complete the rear I ended up using the VT arms and diff but made my own diff carrier and lower arm mounts that tie into the original suzuki chassis rails… kinda had to, where the body sits the arms just tuck under the body perfectly but sadly that swing action is a pain…

Awesome project! I could totally hang with him!, I designed a very similar gear drive systems to relocate the axle output shaft outputs more forward in a awd mk1 vw golf project using a Audi aan 5cy,l in order to keep factory body dimensions and look of the mk1 when using the long Audi aan 5cyl mounted longitudinal within the stock body. The sound of this will be epic. Best of luck! So looking fwd to seeing it completed.👍

Now all we need is a GT40 with a 600+ HP machine and it would be the first Barra converted GT40, maybe should call and talk to the team at roaring40's to see if you can do a upload about their special machines? Still very low to the ground GTR, even a LPI Barra engine with good mods should make that beast do low 9's for sure. :But with 1,500hp just imaging the gear set how strong they would need to be, it would all be titanium and specialised alloys to make strong gear set and bearings and shafts for this beast, keep up the great work cant wait to see it do its first run down the 1/4 mile, i would say at least low 7's to start with and maybe even 6's based on traction control and torque vectoring via the ECU. :))

There's going to be some serious chunter on those primary gears! The module of the teeth look to be quite fine too. It's amazing how much heat bearings reject under high loads like you're going to have. Benefit is the car is light so there is only so long you'll be on the power for! Beam axles can be setup to work but they are a massive compromise for general use. Track use is probably the best scenario.

Exactly honestly this guy is re engineering it to be worse off. You don't re engineer the wheel because it works so well as is. These chassis came fully independent out of the box. All he needs to do is source a Porsche transaxle and an adapter housing to bolt it to the Barra and bam. Seriously this is the most incompetent attempt to needlessly re engineer a vehicle.

Great advice towards the tail end of this video. It seems that it maybe a "urban myth that you can not get things engineered anymore." It makes more sense that it's becoming more difficult and cars are abandoned afterwards because of the failure to follow the strict procedures to qualify to get your cars engineered after the building has completely finished.

That's one amazing build! With the straight cut gears, the Toyota? split gear tensioner cam drive system is something I'm considering for use in a gearbox. It uses a wound spring to apply force opposite the load side of the gears on a sliver of the gear. The tensioned part is maybe 10% of the working gear width. It takes any slop or chatter out of the straight cut gear drive. Gears can't spring back and forth when you unload for shifts, decel, etc.

joining two helical cut gears back to back is called 'herringboning' (pretty obvious visuals)- advantage of helical cut without the axial loads.

I love the build and I spent a lot of time wrenching on low buck road race cars in my 20s and I saw a lot of guys make solid axle cars handle remarkably well I think that thing is going to handle just great and like he said he’s not building it to run a road course at the fastest possible speed and it’s his car so fuck off people that’s going to be a mind blowing ride and the guy is building it by hand for himself I think it’s great he’s doing it absolutely his way and I cannot wait to see more of this car I live in Canada so we do not get to play with the Barra up here and it’s the one motor I would trade my Windsor for if we could get them and the parts here as easily as Australia they sound amazing
