Part 32! 1968 VW Radical Kustom 👽 Ian Roussel Door Refinement And Hinge Re Placement 🤓
Ian said it would get weirder .... 👽 👽
There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing KZbin audience.

It is amazing to see how an artist works, first hand. Seeing the creativity flow as we watch. IMHO, the front, bottom gap should follow the fender top (minimize the visual gap). The rear gap should parallel the rear fender to a point much like you have cut it. I think the rear of the rear quarter window should be further forward by 4 or 5 inches, creating a "panel" effect. Use the heart windows as rear glass. Thank you for letting us look over your shoulders on this journey. Thank you, Joanie for the fabulous "over the shoulder" views. Excellent work and always improving.

I felt sad that all the lovely work to frame the doors is going to be deleted! Then I thought the side entry craziness is just what this project needs! Internally I am impatient to see the finished product... BUT then I thought to myself... the JOURNEY IS the DESTINATION! It's really fun to watch the creative process happen, and love how unbridled enthusiasm overcomes the practicalities of metal and saw!

Your comment not weird enough got me thinking. How about attaching the running board to the bottom of the door. Since the door will travel straight out, then up and back, the door (now including the running board) will work as a single unit. I’d like to draw that out but I’m thinking you get my idea. Great work as always. Cheers.

I am sorry. At 77 I still don't understand hate. I thought it was a compliment noting the similar processes two autodidactic mechanical engineers shared. Each has made a lot of money for others, while keeping only what they require for themselves. Each is accomplished in their endeavors. Each is generous and sharing. They are both surrounded by other smart, caring people. But I can not apologize for the love and respect I have for each of them. The World is better while they are among us - we are the lucky ones.
