Part 2! 1946 CJ-2a Willys Jeep! Ian And Jamie Have Some Major Kustom Ideas 💡 👽
It is well known throughout Jeep Land that overhead valve engine will not fit under the flat fender hood. After much research and help from a viewer on our channel, we have an idea of how to make it fit! Ian also found some super cool jeep tires and rims and we get a first look at the rolling chassis!
Jamie has wished and WISHED for a Willy's Jeep for her Christmas and Birthday present 🎁 . Ian has had a beautiful Willys 1946 CJ-2a Jeep in the back sitting on a Willys M38A1 Chassis for the past few years. Ever since Ian and Jamie were married, Jamie has been eyeing it for a build on Full Custom Garage, sadly the project didn't make it to the show, but now she gets her wish! Jamie is learning about the history of these jeeps and is learning a little wrenching from Ian. The desert is a great place to go "jeepin" and Jamie wants to be part of the club in the warmer months and feel the wind in her hair as she drives to the local market. Jamie is down to get her hands dirty in the garage on this one! We appreciate our amazing support system in the desert with helping us procure the parts needed for this fun build!

The interference on the Hurricane engine in an earlier CJ2 is the carb. The old school solution was to either cut a hole in the hood for the air cleaner to stick through and some would fab a little hood scoop for it. Or, just put just enough body lift on it between the frame and body to allow the air cleaner to clear under the hood. I'd go for the body lift myself.

I've also seen where they move the air filter lower to the side of the motor. They had like an elbow air pipe between filter & carb that was flattened on top of the carb. Maybe just use one of those cone shaped mesh air filters off to the side. 😋

Looks like you have a CJ5 chassis. As you found out the tub bolts the same way but the extra inch is in the front. I just finished up my CJ3B (hi hood) and there's not quite as much clearance behind the front wheels, but it doesn't look out of place. Have a look at some CJ3B pictures and you'll soon figure out where the front was lifted for the F-head engine.

The longer wheel base is going to be a huge advantage in handling and stability. I would retain that and then build around it, you are obviously fully capable of extending the fenders (or ever just repositioning them a little) if need be.

This is a myth. They were a called NDT. Non Directional Tire. They were a Goodyear invention that enabled WW2 vehicles that uses them to get equal "bite" of the terrain whether going forwards or backwards. They were also cheaper and faster to produce than directional tires.

Once you get the motor mocked up in the chassis, look at a 1 barrel Holley from an early 60's Ford 200 6 or maybe even a 50's 223 6 cylinder. It might clear the hood without a hole. It's the carburetor that sits too high and not the valve cover. I'd leave the A1 chassis stock. Any wheelbase you can get just makes it ride better. Want to close an inch of gap, run a bigger tire!

A friend once told me how he used to put needle bearings into a Rudge motorcycle gearbox. He would slather the surface with grease, put the bearings in place, then tie sewing cotton around the completed shaft to hold the bearings in place while inserting the shift into the gearbox. The reason he used the cotton was that the first time the gearbox was used, the cotton would disintegrate without damaging the gearbox. Prior to using this method, he had no end of trouble getting the bearings to stay in place because they would fall off the shaft while he was trying to insert the shaft.

It’s normal for the front wheels to be towards the front of the fenderwells on the flat fender jeeps. It looks a little odd, but it’s typical. The extra inch is no big deal. Yes, the 3B had the taller hood and cowl due to the new overhead valve engine being higher than the old flathead Hurricane engine.

The F head engine will fit under the hood and just barely clear. Usually you have to fold over the metal seam under the center of the hood. The difficult part is getting an air breather to work under the hood. I had one that had a hole in the hood the size of the throat of the carburetor. When you shut the hood you could then place the breather\ air filter on the carburetor.

The M38A-1 has a larger gas tank (17 gals) so it has a well that protrudes downward. Because of that the frame doesn't have a mount under the gas tank on that side. Also, the front mounts don't get used where those triangular parts are at the front of the tub. They just seem to ride there in space. I've never had or worked on a flat fender so wondered if the mounts would be similar between them , so I think that's pretty cool that they line up so well.

Hey Ian since the Jeep is leaf spring get some or make some leaf spring relocation brackets and just move it back till it looks good with the fenders that's what I would do don't cut the frame if not brackets you can always cut the brackets in a leaf springs off the frame and slide it back it'll still look good it'll still have its length and you'll still be able to put that motor in hope this helps you out

I enjoy your channel. The high hood cj3b i think looks out of proportion to the clean lines of the lower hood hurricane engine models. I had a cj3a low hood body and changed the original engine to the overhead engine. I did not raise the hood because the valve cover on the engine fits under the lower hood. The problem is the original carburetor is too tall to fit. Some owners cut a hole in the hood and made a scoop to fit the tall carb. I used the old school fix and got a lower profile carburetor from an early ford. It bolts right on and fits under the hood just fine.

You definitely need the high hood Jeep body. The overhead valve engine sits six or more inches higher than the other engine does, the flathead and so that's why they called it a high hood they didn't make it for very long but it was a really great machine I had one and my friend still has one. Also the front axle is sitting exactly where it's supposed to, they left that space in the front for carrying extra Jerry cans or mounting a winch. most of the winches were gear driven and they also had a PTO on the back end. I don't know which transmission you have and or transfer case but if it's the correct one it will have a side plate on it that is designed to put the front winch drive gear attachment to it and that will also drive the PTO in the rear .

Believe you worked on a CJ2a for a friends grandson ! Front fenders set will behind tires just like yours ! Why not get original Go Devil 134 L Head engine instead of F Head 134 Hurricane that came out of a CJ3b & early CJ5 then you won't need a taller grill , hood , firewall & cowling ! Should be plenty out there since everyone is doing V8 swaps these days ! Don't believe you're suppose to re-use old U Bolts once they've been torqued down because of how they put the threads on ! Also you might want an after market dual master cylinder & bigger brake drums for safety reasons ! My CJ3a you had to put your foot thru the floor to stop it !

Love the old flat fender jeeps. I've had 4 jeeps over the years. A 1946 and 1947 CJ2A. The "47 had an F head swapped in that was from a CJ3B or pickup so it had a hood scoop to accommodate the carb. The valve cover is still below the original 2A hood. Your wheelbase is not too far off. The radiator mounts to that front cross member. Then I had a 1975 CJ5 that my dad and I did a complete fiberglass body tub swap when I was in high school. the last one I had was a mid 90's XJ Cherokee sport. Really want another one but the prices have gone out of site. I'll have to look in my stuff. I may still have some old CJ2A parts in the garage.

Whoever is saying things about you saying stuff to get sponsored, clearly doesn’t understand what a job is, or running or owning a business or organization….. if people are willing to sponsor you because of the awesome work you do, then more power to you, you have to make a living doing this, which is all for our entertainment or enjoyment, so do whatever you need to save and make money because it only gives us a better product, and gives you the ability to continue to make these awesome projects for us.

did you consider moving the front leaf mounts back, that might work if the oil pan has clearance.

Great video!! I use both Army Jeep Supply and Kaiser Willy’s, Jeepsterman has a good selection too. They all seem to throw candy in. I’m interested too see if you can get that motor low enough to clear the hood.

When I read the description of the clip I went WTF, what do you mean your retiring the Jeep project you haven’t even started building it yet, and then I saw Ian roll them in and went oh I get it, a little dad joke. Can’t wait to see the direction this takes I do believe it’ll be a sweet little ride when it’s all finished
