"I spent my whole life at the mercy of men just following orders... Never again" That line gives me chills every time
@amireal2u4 жыл бұрын
I've yet to see anyone comment on the historical relevance of this particular line. Yes it's an EXCELLENT line with an amazing delivery BUT IT ALSO is a line most Jewish people use when referring to the holocaust in general. So to have this survivor of the camps to say it, especially in response to the 'they were just following orders' line is an excellent choice on multiple levels.
@UTU4 жыл бұрын
It's not 'my whole life' but rather 'I have been at' - since he did get out of there alive. But indeed - one of the best lines in the film.

@@amireal2u The entire POINT of the line is its historic significance - I suspect people don't comment on that because it is exceedingly obvious? I don't think anyone thinks it's an excellent line without considering the context of Magneto's time spent as a holocaust survivor.

Magneto is a far cry from a villain. He is the anti-hero. Calling Magneto a villain would be like calling Wolverine a villain. Neither are but their tragic backstories have shaped their views of the world, rightfully so. Professor X has been afforded his black and white moral line, because he has been very privileged. Yeah but it doesn't look like Argentina at all. That sequence, as good as it is, is somewhat famous in Argentina because the city it takes place in, Villa Gesell, has cero mountains in it in real life. It's actually a beach destination. My guess is the people working on the movie thought Gesell sounded kind of German and since Josef Mengele was hiding in Bariloche and Bariloche has mountains, well let's put all of those things together. The one thing I do love about the sequence though is the music. The gave the Magneto theme a twist and musicalized the sequence with a Creole guitar version.

The problem is that Magneto *is* a Nazi, just as the men that he is hunting, except that his ubermenchen are “mutants” instead of Aryans. His only problem with Shaw was that he killed his mother, and shortly his “Mutants Only” attitude would have made her as disposable as Rebecca Romijn’s Raven in Last Stand after being hit with the mutant power-cancelling darts.
@clayxros5764 жыл бұрын
@@Egilhelmson @Egilhelmson Excuse me what? Ok, so let's go over all the problems with the claims you just made. Firstly, Magneto ain't a Nazi. Though he does attack the outside world based on his ideology, he always attacks officials of the government he is targeting. Who his nation is at war with. He attacks enemy mutants the same as humans as well, not taking steps to broad strokes exterminate humans. Second, and this is a big one, mutants ARE basically a different race than humans. And are without question upgraded, ergo superior to anyone paying attention. Him claiming mutants are the evolutionary step forward, in their world, actually bears a fair amount of proof and his world often puts a lot of effort into trying to either enslave or exterminate them. Attacks against those that target your species and nation can easily just be seen as war battles. Third , you remember that he lived in a CONCENTRATION CAMP?! Shaw killing his mom was the last straw, not his entire motivation. Him and his mom had been suffering through that mistreatment, and he suffered through Shaw's grooming after that while watching his friends and fellows die. There is a lot of reasons for Magneto to want to hunt Nazis, and I'd wager he would still be hunting them after he got Shaw if he didn't have a fledgling Mutant nation to deal with. Sincerely I'm not quite sure where your arguments are coming from co sidering all we know about this story, its characters and the universe. It's a seriously bad take.

I've long said Fassbender would make a great Bond. He's such a fine actor an has such catlike grace and restrained brutality, plus he can wear damn near anything without looking ridiculous (a rarer and more significant quality than most realize). Fassbender is a great actor. It's sad to think what his career might have been if his movie choices had panned out better. While I don't think it's tarnished his reputation that he's been in so many stinkers (the later X-men movies, the Alien-series and that awful Assassin's Creed movie), since he's always been seen as the best part of those movies, it can't have done him any favours either. To me, he's the best choice for the next Bond, but due to his career, I don't know if he'll get the chance.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this, I actually feel like Fassbender would kind of be too obvious of a choice. I mean, I've never been a big James Bond aficianado, though I have seen every Daniel Craig entry except Quantum Of Solace (come to think of it I wish I could not have seen Spectre). I feel like my memory is at the time of the last switch over, Craig was far from the first choice on many peoples' minds, but maybe I'm getting that totally wrong. But all in all I think he's done a terrific job, when he had something good to work with. Part of what made him intriguing is he wasn't a totally obvious fit. Then again, I also think that Simon Quarterman (Lee Sizemore on "Westworld") would make a really interesting pick for whenever they go onto a new Doctor on Doctor Who, I've been saying this for months and I've literally not had a single person say they agree with me lol
@senryu934 жыл бұрын

This and Rise of the Planet of the Apes bookended the same summer & I LOVE how both make you sympathize immensely with characters that are usually viewed as "villains". Magneto & Ceaser were the two most complex mainstream cinema characters we've seen in a while. "I've been at the mercy of men 'just following orders'", what a constantly resonant line. #MagnetoWasRight

When you recap what happened in the movie and its significance, I now understand why all the following movies bombed. X-Men First Class's narrative culminated in the establishment of the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. They should have built the following movies upon that, this divide between Professor X and Magneto and the factions they created. Instead, they lost focus and crammed whole story arcs in standalone movies.

You know what I love about First Class and DOFP being two X-Men films released back-to-back? One revealed the moment in history where humans first settled their differences to unite against mutants, and the other showed the melting point between them further in the future, almost at the end of that conflict with one side utterly gaining dominance. Watching them back to back is honest to god one of the best experiences ever, both being good movies is just icing on the cake.

This movie does not get enough love. I love that 60’s vibe the director brought to the movie. The scene with Magneto dealing with ex-Nazis was incredible. If l'm to be honest, I don't want the x-men in the mcu they work better beeing on their own universe, they have enough material to work with to create their own shared universe that could have rivaled the mcu. The inhumans/NUhumans would have been a good replacement for the mutants in the mcu and would fit perfectly in the the mcu at this moment. They have an explanation to why superpowered humans(the NUhumans) suddently start popping across the globe and the explanation is "the terrigene mist". sadly fox fucked up with their continuity.

As seemingly the only person in the world who's favorite X-Men movie is First Class, I'm a BIG fan of the title. My biggest gripe is that Xavier was paralyzed by a ricochet and not from the coin going through Shaw's head while Charles had him frozen
@IshtarNike4 ай бұрын
Is that what's in the canon? Both are fine, but the ricochet makes more sense for continuity and power scaling reasons. It would be a huge weakness if the professor could be permanently injured whenever someone he's connected to is injured.
