A great video James some great advice and information, love the emotional up and downs of salmon fishing which is all too familiar. I also like the practical honest balance between theory and reality! Some lovely looking water and lovely strong fish. Not easy producing for the camera, well done! Thanks for producing and sharing.

What a fantastic video that was James I really enjoyed that. Some really good explanations on technique and river craft, I might even start using a dropper myself now😊 Great production and narration keeps the attention going the whole way through the video. The large net is definitely a problem with the drag, its ok if someone netting for you but on your own its quite a challenge, the smaller version might be better for summer. Well done on the fish as well 3 fish in day is great going. Although the Tyne is quiet far away for me would love a cast on it one day looks a great river.

I definitely prefer a faster action nymphing rod for this for that hook set. Sage esn and echo shadow 2 have been great. I think a contact 2 3wt would be nice as well but haven’t tried it for this. That echo shadow 2 is really hard to beat for the money, it gets down and dirty. Really nice dry fly rod as well, it can really cast a fly line unlike some of the other euro rods I’ve used.

Hi James, I wonder what is your set up for salmon. I use double handed 13ft #8, scandi fly line floating then leader and tippet. I fish in the welsh Dee, Welsh Clwyd and Welsh Elwy salmon sea trout and standard fly fishing trout/grayling

Stokoe Shrimp works for me on the Tyne - I tie my own with Foxytails synthetic, ginger inner wing with a red outer, red cock hackle. Size 12 and 14s. Ive got bushy ones, and sparse. Fulling Mill Magni doubles of course !. Great stuff James.

Fished this Warden stretch a lot when I was in the TWF club 18+ years, which now share it with day ticket anglers. This beat from the Folly pool down to Chair has been on TV now a few times with Robson Green and Mortimer and Whitehouse fishing it, and on youtube and you never see much caught there. Shame to say it, but the Tyne just isn't the river it used to be. I pulled a 24lb fish from the Upper Casting platform but that was many years ago - it's rare these days. Every year the Kielder salmon hatchery release salmon fry in the hundreds of thousands - the river should be lifting with fish but it isn't. The fish are released into the North Tyne only so the South Tyne above the junction pool sees no benefit, and is a spate river so just doesn't fish at all unless there has been plenty of rain. As for the North Tyne, that too relies on Kielder water releases for a decent water height, and falls right away to very little if there is no water release on. I can't for the life of me see why people are paying hundreds of pounds a day to fish it in the salmon season. These days I head an hour further north up to the tweed and it's tributaries - quieter, easier and safer fishing underfoot, physically more fly fishing friendly and better value. I enjoy watching James Stokoe fish - he's very knowledgeable and knows that river better than anyone - but if he's struggling - then that says something.

That's a great point about the net and trying to control it and the fish and fast water, very difficult sometimes. You need to hit the gym a bit more James to strengthen those arms.😂💪💪
