A couple of clarifications: Mustang mentioned the fuhrer's irony when Ed received his title because apparently the Japanese words for "fullmetal" and "stubborn" sound similar; by giving him that title Bradley was making an untranslatable pun regarding Ed's personality; also, Bradley's not a king, just the fuhrer... King is actually his name.

There is actually a pretty big reason why the first two episodes are so packed with information and the pace is so quick and that's because this is technically the second adaptation. The first one, just called Fullmetal Alchemist '03 was the first adaptation that started airing in 2003. But because the manga was nowhere near finished, (or even halfway, I think) they had to come up with their own story after a certain point resulting in a completely different story than that of Brotherhood, which first aired in 2009 and is the adaptation that follows the manga's (then pretty much finished) story. So the '03 anime actually has a much slower start and if you compare animes '03 and '09, you can actually very clearly see where the story took a different turn in the first adaptation. (Just an interesting FYI, I don't know if you know yet)

Just a heads up as you guys go forward with this series. FMA: Brotherhood is the second attempt to adapt this series into an anime (having started airing in 2009) with the first having aired in 2003 and simply titled "Fullmetal Alchemist". The 2003 version ran when the Manga was still being written and overtook it about 25 episodes in. Because the two adaptations were created and aired that the far apart from each other, the early episodes of this anime (about the first 10 or so) are more or less abridged versions of the first few arcs of the 2003 anime until the point of divergence, as they expected most viewers of this to have watched the 2003 version. As such for these first 10 or so episodes, if it feels as though the Brotherhood's pace is moving very quickly, that is the reason. After they reach the point of divergence, things improve.

The pacing for this show is amazing and seamless. When you have an opportunity to to compare I would watch the original version of fma to see how this episode compares. there are subtle differences that align well but give it new flavor. I personally still prefer the original first 12 fma episodes as I feel the brotherhood version is abbreviated. I think its because the fma:brotherhood people knew they were retreading the same ground because of how the original was so well received and faithful. so more emphasis was given to the diverging content.

They don't really get into much of the actual mechanics of alchemy compared to the manga or original anime. Alchemy is kind of like "chemistry" in that you typically need to be able to draw circles with special language, proper inputs and outputs, and when activating the circle you need to have a clear metal picture of what you're trying to do. What causes rebounds is when you have an "incomplete" process, like failing to account for some sort of input or not having the actual knowledge to do a transmutation. A rebound will take something from you in order to complete the transmutation. Human transmutation is particularly taboo because the rebounds are so catastrophic and will almost always kill the person attempting them, either immediately or shortly after. You need a lot of actual scientific knowledge to do almost any alchemy and most commonly certified (state) alchemists are only an expert in a specific field or element. This is why alchemy isn't done by most people, even simple alchemy like the bird the boys created is quite hard and potentially dangerous. The state pretty closely tracks the actions of unsanctioned alchemists, because there are some things which aren't taboo but are illegal like creating currency and other forms of fraud. Roy (a state alchemist) and Riza (his aide) were following up on a lead about an unsanctioned alchemist, whether or not they were doing anything illegal, and Roy was acting in a manner so as to give his professional opinion as an alchemist on whether or not the unsanctioned alchemist was dangerous, or a potential asset. He immediately recommended both Edward and Alphonse to try the state alchemist exam, they were *both* that good. The state alchemist exam has two different passing criteria and either one can get you in: demonstrating excellence in a particular field that would be useful to the military, or practical application that would make an excellent soldier. Ed went for the latter and is more of an alchemical generalist. The military is now primarily sending Ed out to investigate reports of alchemy as his generalist nature and "useful skills for a soldier" allow for quiet investigations and he doesn't require a large entourage. Ed took the state certification himself as he wanted to protect Al from military obligations, Al essentially is in Ed's direct employ and receives sanction from him, but isn't military himself. The other anime kind of skipped past this when there were actually about 5-ish episodes dedicated to it.

So I don't think this counts as a spoiler but, its been considered for years now that the toll they paid was "Edwards leg because he was arrogant in 'standing on his own' (Ignoring help from anyone basically and yet failing)" and Alphonse's body simply because he wanted to hug his mother/eat her food again (So now he can't feel anything anymore). Edwards arm paying the tool for the soul binding is because he 'reached' back to bring his brother back. In the future you'll see others peoples 'tolls' and its mostly irony (One case the toll is literally taking a person's eyesight to pay the toll for their 'visions' (this person has a very strong vision of their goal so truth took that from them as the toll)). The reason human transmutation is so forbidden, is not just human made laws (though they def do count), but because you are entering 'God's Domain', and it will kick your ass for it. At a certain level of transmutation the equivalent exchange becomes too risky and you can die if not careful (Usually in the cases of rebounds; When someone does transmutation without the equal amount of 'energy' or materials in place)

So I don't know if anybody's mentioned it, but the pacing of the beginning of Brotherhood is a bit fast. The first series in 2003 got ahead of the manga, so they had to make up their own storylines, but Brotherhood follows the finished manga so the second half of the story is different. Because the first half is pretty much the same, though, Brotherhood assumes that most people have watched the 2003 version so they just make sure to hit the main story beats until they get to the new material. You'll still get all the information you need to know from just watching Brotherhood, but it will come on a little fast at first. Don't worry though, the pacing will slow down a bit before too long, and it's *absolutely* worth it. One of the best shows out there with an amazing cast of characters and a compelling story.
