Did you notice the Dwarf’s door behind him, it was empty. All those decades and he learned nothing. Whereas Ed’s door / portal of truth was full of things.

Seeing Truth happily concede to Ed as they admit to their defeat is one of my favorite moments of the show. It almost made it feel like they’d been secretly rooting for him the whole time. The last scene with Truth and father can be summed up pretty well with this quote by A. Giloni: "Without factual truth you cannot have moral clarity. Without moral clarity you will never have factual truth.” Notice how Truth didn’t respond when father asked “what’s wrong with craving knowledge?”. And that’s because there *isn’t* anything wrong with wanting to pursue truth and perfection. It’s the very drive behind evolution itself, an innate instinct that does not discriminate between the sentient and insentient and a natural desire most living things have. However it’s the way the individual pursues their truth that determines their character and what they actually learn/obtain in the end. Father tried to take the shortcut because of his hubris and was humbled by the truth; dragged back into the portal just as ignorant as he was the first day he came to existence. Ironically he achieves his wish at the price of the one thing he valued the most. The dwarf’s story also reminds me of Icarus and his wings of wax.

That's probably why Edward brought that fable up when he was speaking to Rose. It was a big theme throughout the story. From the Elric's, to Izumi, to the dwarf in the flask.

"what you might call" Truth never actually names itself. It simply uses the references that others have for it. Even "Truth" is just a name someone else applied to it.

Ed figured out the answer but only after Al did. Ed gave up his arm to get Al's soul back, so Al assumed the reverse was possible. It turned out to be true. It's subtle, but Ed looks at his arms after looking at Al and realized this as well. Ed (accidentally) gave up his brother to gain the advanced knowledge of alchemy, so he bet he could return his alchemy for his brother. On a side note, Ed did not have to draw the human transmutation circle but did so because he knew it would be his last transmutation. If you go back to episode 2, look at Truth's reaction to Ed saying "my theory of human transmutation can be done, its just missing something". Truth looks disappointed in Ed's answer in episode 2 but is overjoyed that Ed got the right answer in episode 63. Truth wanted an alchemist to realize they don't have to solve all their problems with alchemy and you can rely on others for help. In contrast, The Dwarf wanted all the knowledge of alchemy without any of the work, hence the Dwarf's doorway being empty. The Dwarf also took away his 7 desires in attempt to obtain "perfection" but all it really did was make him even more flawed. For example, one of my favorite lines is Father talking to Greed "Everything you desire, I can assure you I wanted it first". It applies to all the homonculi with probably Greed and Envy being the most obvious. Father was jealous (envy) of humans and wanted (greed) everything they had but his Pride made him see humans as beneath him. He waited millennia (sloth) doing nothing but preparing for a single day and was angry (wrath) when he lost, asking Truth "who do you think you are?". Not sure where gluttony or lust fit into this but I like this interpretation the most. Congratulations on completing one of the best anime ever made. Well, the prologue is the true ending. Happy watching! :D

Dwarf wanted to consume everything hence him taking God, and he also wanted to be loved as part of a family, hence him creating homunculi and making them call him "father"

Did you notice the dwarfs door to truth was blank while everyone else had symbols representing their achievements in alchemy? He had no truth to share only lies, even to himself.

Actually, this episode was supposed to be the final episode. A problem has occurred. What is the problem? For the sake of readers and viewers, the publisher and anime creators announced a surprise date for the monthly serialization and the TV anime version to be aired on the same day, and the final episode would be announced. It was impossible to match the episode that the original work had as the final episode to the air date of the TV anime version. So the original author made a decision. He decided to create (draw) a new episode that was necessary by the air date of the TV anime version without destroying the world view of the story. That scene is Hohenheim's visit to the grave. It is an episode of such quality that it seems as if it was planned, but it was drawn in a hurry due to schedule adjustments. And on the same day that the final episode was announced for both the TV anime version and the monthly magazine, the anime creators animated the original that the manga artist had just finished, and the final episode of the anime version was aired in the evening. Thus, in Japan at that time, the final episode of the original work was announced in the morning. The final episode of the anime version was aired in the afternoon and evening on the same day. The original author's creativity has reached a frightening level. She became pregnant and gave birth during the serialization of this work. It has never been on hiatus. After watching the final episode, I think you'll be able to appreciate the happiness even more if you check out the Wikipedia pages for Fullmetal Alchemist and the original author. This may be an interesting way to enjoy the series that only those who have patiently watched the entire anime can enjoy.

With the loss of greed, we have come to the full death/defeat of each homunculus. But it's interesting to point out how each of their ends come in an ironic way. Lust: Burned to death by a womanizer who fought save the woman he loved. Gluttony: Devoured by one of his own kind. Sloth: Overexerted himself and burned out his philosopher stone. Envy: Commits suicide after being pitied and having their jealousy of humans exposed. Wrath: Died peacefully and content with his life, killed by a man that conquered his own vengeful anger. Pride: Didn't die, but instead was reduced or "humbled" to the lowest form of a human. Greed: Died seflessly sacrificing himself for another, giving up everything but still being satisfied with his life because of the friends he made.

Homunculus's deepest rooted aversion was being bound, because he was extracted from "everything". His deepest desire was to "experience", something he wasn't able to do when he was part of everything. But he mistakenly viewed his flask as the same kind of binding that bound him before, and he wanted to break free of all binding. In contrast to the seven sins, there exists the concept of seven virtues. The number is less relevant, but one interpretation is that sin and virtue are two sides of the same aspect. Truth refers to them as desires, not as sin or virtue. The ability to experience requires them, otherwise you wouldn't "be". The truth of Truth's assertion that Homunculus wanted the outcome he engineered for himself is ironic. By removing the desires he considered flaws, Homunculus was almost instinctively trying to become "everything" again by lessening his capacity to "experience". He says so himself without understanding the true meaning of what he's saying.
