There is such a melancholic realness to the story of Killmonger. So many young black and brown children have their loved ones taken from them prematurely because of the culture that surrounds them, and the cyclical nature of fatherlessness is perpetuated for generations. I think the portrayal of Killmonger's character and his change of heart is a perfect display of the hearts of many people put in unfortunate situations.

Killmonger was one of the more interesting antagonists of the MCU for sure. The narrative that the movie tried to convey was that his extreme actions were motivated by pain he suffered in his past. They threaded an incredible needle in the writing of this movie. Treating the idea of a technolgical, advanced African culture with humour and respect instead of making it a virtue signal, and dealing openly with African-American racial issues and slavery without lecturing. Not to mention crafting a superhero whose culture is part of them without defining them. There were so many ways it could have gone wrong, but didn't. Phenomenal.

I agree that the screenwriters did an excellent job of adapting things to modern day- making it relevant and compelling. However the basic concept of Black Panther the hero and the nation of Wakanda aren't new... it's how they were introduced back in the 1960s, and the movie just stayed true to that.

@aaronbeatdown
@aaronbeatdown Ай бұрын
You questioned the motivations of W'Kabi, which I get, but he's very similar to Killmonger. His father was murdered and his family was promised vengeance since he was probably a child, and he grows up getting more and more resentful of the fact that nothing is being done. Then his best friend takes the throne, is told directly that justice would be served, and again is let down. I think if Killmonger never shows up, they probably patch things over as someone hurt saying something hurtful. But then here comes this stranger who coincidentally is dragging along one of the things you've wanted most in your life. You might feel indebted to that man. Also, he's part of the Border tribe, so he's probably interacted with the outside world much more than the average Wakandan, so it's possible that also factors into why he suddenly supports Killmonger. Also, the weapons from Homecoming are made using the Chitauri technology left over from the first Avengers.

As little as he was in Civil War, Chadwick had so much charisma he stole the show at times. Speaking of Civil War, Everett Ross, the older white gentleman that helps the Wakandan's in the end has always been good. The only other time we've seen him though was at the end of Civil War. He's interrogating Zemo and in charge of his captivity.

If you didn't remember, since I'm not seeing a full reaction, Klaue (played by Andy Circus) has a fake hand and arm because Ultron cut off his arm in Avengers Age of Ultron. He was the guy selling Ultron Vibranium in Africa, When Wanda made the Hulk go crazy in the city and Iron-Man had to stop him. The Vibranium he sold Ultron, was Vibranium he stole, and thus why they're trying to apprehend him (also he killed Wakabi's father when stealing the Vibranium, thus why Wakabi is so quick to side with Killmonger when he shows up with a dead Klaue's body.) Also, because you didn't remember the end of Civil War, with Bucky being frozen in Wakanda, Agent Ross, the U.S. government agent who was shot, then flew the planes at the end, was also in Civil War. He helped T'challa at the base where they initially captured Bucky, before Zemo said the words and made him go brainwashed assassin. He also talked to Zemo at the end, when he said that Zemo's plan failed, and Zemo replied, "Did it?"

Killmonger is the true hero of this movie. Disney forced him to do bad things, like attacking the elders, being disrespectful to his own people, or killing innocents in cold blood. By only looking at his motivation to be a villain, children might get confused about whether the hero is Black Panther or him.
@Igwecala-xm3dg
@Igwecala-xm3dg Ай бұрын
He's not the hero, but he was the catalyst for the needed change in Wakanda. You don't set up a Wakandan Empire, murder anyone who opposed your rule and their offspring, and basically kill/threaten to kill anyone not on your side. He showed T'Challa the way, though; if Boseman had lived, we'd be in a world where N'Jadaka inspired him to place Wakandan support all over Black Africa, and the African Diaspora even broader than that. The outreach centers would've gone from Oakland to include Detroit, Chicago, Flint, Tuskegee, St Louis, and any other American community with African/Black concentrations, and that would've gone up into some places in Canada, before going to the Afro-Latino hubs across Latin America. RiRi Williams likely gets spotted before she's off to MIT, with a host of other talents across the Diaspora

Wakanda Forever my king, icon, and hero for young African Americans. Also to mention that the 2 black panther movie soundtrack are great. Ludwig Goransson is the best composer for movies and TV. Before you shed too many tears for Killmonger and his "pain", please remember that every bump he had on his skin is for a person he had killed. I don't care how much emotional trauma you've experienced or had to endure. It doesn't give you free reign to kill hundreds of people or make you a sympathetic character. He was the villain in this and a heartless, self-absorbed monster. He didn't care about making things right for anyone else in the world. He wanted to punish Wakanda and his family

Black Panther has to be in the top 10 greatest marvel movies of all time and one of the greatest superhero movies of all time Not because it's about a black superhero but because the story telling is nearly flawless

People often completely miss the underlying analogy at play with the character of Killmonger. The whole "we left him behind" is a cinematic double entendre. Throughout the early 1900's and really up until the 70's and 80's with the rise of black awareness and black nationalism a narrative existed with African Americans questioning why nations in Africa never attempted to bring them back to Africa. It was a whole abandonment narrative that Black Americans had to reclaim the African roots and heritage in order to be re-embraced by Africa. It was there from Marcus Garvey and the "Back to Africa" movement all through the civil rights era even through the 80's and 90's with Black musicians and artists wearing black medallions and conscious rap. This is what is at play here in analogy with Killmonger embodying that narrative. When T'Challa confronts the Wakandian Kings and Black Panthers of the past with "Why didn't you bring the child home?", this is the question Black Americans for many years posed to Africa and there was a love / hate resentment over this unanswerable question for many years. Even now the disconnect exists. This is what Ryan Coogler was pulling from and why it hit different and many can relate to Killmonger's motivations even though his methods and overall goals were flat out wrong.

Stef, when your are talking about your own struggles, I can suggest two quotes to keep in mind. The first is from the Hippocratic Oath that doctors take: "either help, or do no harm". The other is the Golden Rule: "Do to others as you would have them do to you". If you consider an action by these quotes, rather than just reacting without thinking, you will do the right thing. After a while it will become a habit, and you won't have think before acting. ==== We previously saw Klaue in Age of Ultron. He was the weapons dealer who sold the Vibranium to Ultron for his next body, then got his arm cut off by mentioning Tony Stark. Its been replaced by an artificial laser arm. He had nothing to do with Spiderman Homecoming. The Vulture started out by cleaning up after the Battle of New York in Avengers 2012, and pocketing some the alien tech to sell. Later they were stealing alien tech from the Department of Damage Control who took over cleaning up collateral damage. Andy Serkis (Klaue) also played Gollum and Martin Freeman (CIA agent Ross) played Frodo in The Hobbit. So this was a Fellowship of the Ring reunion of sorts. Since so many actors in this film are black, on the set they called themselves the "Tolkien white boys". 🙂 Except for Klaue, who knew he was a bad person for selling weapons, and kind of crazy too, everyone in this film thought they were doing the right thing. Unfortunately "the right thing" wasn't the same thing for everyone. The other theme in this film is rigidly following tradition and getting violent in defense of tradition, vs sitting down and talking, and maybe admitting that things are changing and tradition has to bend with those changing. Shuri (T'challah's sister) is the embodiment of change. She is young and Tony Stark level smart. The ones who fought with Killmonger put tradition first, even if it meant putting a very bad person on the throne.

Stef, structure is very important. Routines. It's fun to shake them loose, test limits every so often. I can see a structured life turning away from structure. I won't pretend that my accommodations appear organized, but that's because to me, they are organized, no matter how they appear to others. I'm not going to tell anyone how to live their life, I am simply going to say that personally, I liked the structure more.

Hey, Stef. Maybe post some shorts of your paintings. Just to give a quick look at them. And maybe, a comment. Just a thought. Or perhaps, on a live stream. Just an idea. Meanwhile, can we get some older movies on the channel. I've seen recently that many creators enjoyed watching films that concentrate on stories more than special effects. No snark, I grew up loving comic books and am grateful to see my childhood heroes come to life. Some suggestions. SOME LIKE IT HOT or DONT BOTHER TO KNOCK starting Marilyn Monroe. 12 ANGRY MEN with Henry Fonda. TRUE GRIT with John Wayne. And finally, TO SIR, WITH LOVE. I feel like this one will appeal to someone your age. The social and cultural shift in society during the late 196o's plays a big part in the generation gap of the characters in this movie. Plus, it has the great Sidney Poitier as the lead actor. Don't worry about the mess in your room. It has been said the messier a writers desk, the better the writer. Art is bedt when you organize your ideas into something from the chaos. Keep going and enjoy the movies.

Zemo, Killmonger, and Thanos are my favorite MCU villains. Killmonger is the only villain to change the hero’s world view. Because of Erik, T’challa went from isolationism to engaging with the world.

Stef you have to really think about killmonger side of things. He's a black kid living in Oakland California 1 of the most dangerous cities in America in the 90's, he finds out that he's from a country that should've stopped slavery from even starting, saw that black people around the world needed help and they didn't do shit about it

Killmonger was not a redeemable or sympathetic villain. His entire plan was to take the throne then thrust Wakanda into war. Wakanda would either get destroyed physically or have him as its ruler and he would taint it from what it once was. It was only ever about destroying Wakanda, he could care less about black people.
