If you remember way way back when Ed was in Xerxes, it was mentioned that Amestris has a story of a sage coming from the direction of Xerxes (East) who taught them Alchemy, and then it's mentioned that Xing has a similar story of a sage coming from the direction of Xerxes (West) who taught them Alkahestry. So yeah, Father went West to ancient Amestris and Hoenheim went East to ancient Xing.

I never caught that father brought alchemy to Amestris. I just assumed Hoenheim went to Xing then later over to Amestris. That helps explain the difference between Amestris and Xing's style in alchemy.

Just a little fun fact: The author, Hiromu Arakawa, at the time had given birth to her second child, so she wanted to give Ed a sense of the pain a woman goes through during childbirth, with that scene where Henkel removes that piece of iron from Edward's abdomen.

Guys, this isn't a spoiler I just gotta set your thinking straight. The reason Amestris and Xing have the same story of who created alchemy is because Hoenheim went east, and Father went West after Xerxes was destroyed (may be opposite it's not explicitly stated). Hoemheim and Father taught two different styles of alchemy. To put it into more relatable terms, it's like how the sun warriors taught a different way to firebend in AtLA. This is why Father can turn off one kind but not the other.

@monkeyroby
@monkeyroby 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Father can turn it off also because Amestris' alchemy is directly tied to the 'consumption' of Father's philosopher's stone to transmute stuff - i.e. alchemy in the west uses the incredibly high amount of souls within Father to transmute (= the 'thousands of squirming people' May Chang said she can sense right underneath Amestris). Whereas Alkahestry is based on earth's natural flow of energy between living things, thus is totally unrelated to Father's powers and control.

This is my favorite episode of Brotherhood. It's the only time I've seen in these kinds of stories where the hero's "naive" principles actually come back to bite them in the ass and almost end up costing them their life. I love the fact that this show acknowledges that you can totally get screwed for doing what's right. But the thing I love the most is how Ed actually takes this a step further by owning up to his naivete and saying "if this is the price I have to pay for refusing to compromise on my principles, I'll pay it. I'll deal with the consequences of my actions". I love Brotherhood so much.

I don’t like heroes/heroines that don’t kill as much as ones that do kill sparingly. Sometimes it is done well like with Daredevil, or Batman (sometimes). Aang could’ve been done better but they copped out and made a giant turtle give him the power to take people’s bending away. Zack Snyder’s Batman kills too much though. Killing is necessary sometimes especially in cases like the Joker.

Ed knows just how precious and irreplaceable a life is so he isn't so willing to take it. A lot of people would call that naive, but I greatly admire Ed for that. Even more so when he sticks by his beliefs regardless of what happens. In a way, it shows how he isn't just all talk, because he acknowledges that his mercy and not willing to kill got him into this mess, and he basically owns up to it and accepts the consequences (i.e. shortening his own lifespan). With that said, it was fantastic voicework on Vic's part! I could really feel the pain Ed was feeling in that moment, and Vic did a phenomenal job conveying it. Fun fact: Hiromu Arakawa, the mangaka, just had her second child while writing the scene with Ed's impalement. She wanted to portray the pain a mother goes through to give life, and this was how she decided to convey it.

Kimbly is smart to have two stones because he probably doesn't know when the first stone is going to run out of power and dissolve. The impalement is one of my favorite scenes in the show. Seeing someone having to use their magic to get a steel beam out of their stomach is a good break-back to logic when shadows with faces are dismembering soldiers and horses underground. Minus a few cheesy lines, it really grounds that world in some realness by selling the trauma in that moment.

You cut it out, but one of my favorite scenes in fma is Ed's hair twitching and the line "you can't kill me that easily" Aside from the human transmutation, this is the first time Ed has been mortally wounded and had prolonged suffering, really. Not many main characters, especially in a "shounen like" anime such as this went through the same thing honestly. Though not many authors include the pain of their experience of childbirth in their stories.

Kimblee kept the older stone because he figured it could come in useful - indeed, he tried to barter with Ed back at Briggs to get him to follow orders, and this time around his having a second stone caught Ed off guard. He got it from Envy, when he was let out of prison. In theory, what Edward did could be done by any alchemist worth their pocket watch; in practice, it's a VERY dangerous technique and you need to be genuinely skilled. That's without accounting for the willpower needed to survive your injuries (and the chimeras have to take Ed to a doctor). Basically a last resort.

Big Time FMAB Episode now, they're all getting to that stage. Shit has been thrown down, set on fire and slapped around your face WHERE IS NAVI!? Adults can watch Sunday Morning Cartoons I bet my father's calves could beat up your father's calves No more Lost References? It'll take a lot of effort to get off that island Per Se as in they are not related and that Hohenheim's Blood is simply the Homunculus' anchor to the world and the means of his ability to use Alchemy To what end indeed, would you believe me if I told you that technically they've already said it, repeatability and foreshadowing are staples of FMAB Father is immortal yes, but the country is called Amestris, which is actually the name of King Xerxes I's (like legit person, not the guy in the show) wife Eat him? That's kinda brutal Marketa... Well you certainly have more balls than Navi Classes start at $20 a lesson right AJ? To quote Drax the Destroyer 'I too am increasingly humble' How do you fight shadows? 'The lights, you need to put out the lights' That's all the answers you're gonna get with Father's Origins, they don't say it flat out but it's implied that Father resided inside that Door within the portal of truth, thus the black hands 'Take Kimblee's Bending Away' - well...he tried that at least AJ I don't think they get it, The Western and Eastern Sage being Hohenheim and Father, wiggle your brows some more! Yes, Amestris has the legend of how Alchemy was brought from Xerxes by the Eastern Sage, that was Father. Xing also had a similar legend, where Alchemy was _incorporated_ with Xingese practices to create Alkahestry by the Western Sage, Hohenheim. 'Hold on Brother' always gets a laugh from me, it's perfect Pride cannot read thoughts, he's a shadow monster Solf, like Dolph but with an S Miles, not Niles Slight Visual Change though, Ammonia is actually colorless He got the round stone from Envy when he was released from prison, he only has the one now Miles was told to keep back, that was the last piece of dialogue he got from Ed Well ain't that a stab through the gut It's more a theory, but people assume that since Ed was near death, their entwined souls became closer to passing on, thus leading to Al encountering his body again It's the benefits of mercy, Ed never killed and so the people around him feel indebted to him, not only out of admiration for his strive and ideals but as a means of making up for him sparing theirs He's using his own soul like the souls within a philosopher's stone It is painful to watch, but it is an incredible scene. Not only was it inspired by Arakawa's experience in childbirth but Vic sells the pain in his voice perfectly Yeah they don't know how to use the stone, and Ed is kinda KO'd right now, but Ed would know how to use the Stone, it's just that he doesn't want to use someone else's life to help himself. Lion, not wolf. Their names are Darius (Gorilla) and Heinkel (Lion) Ed is feeding Al's body nutrients in order for Al to survive, but it's like bare minimum given how skinny Al's body is Hohenheim didn't 'fix' Izumi, her organs are still missing, but Hohenheim rearranged her entrails to ease her blood flow. Ed used his own soul to reattach his damaged organs to stop the bleeding, it was not a perfect fix Guys you gotta binge it, there's room on that sofa for one more too, drag Navi back if you have to Father introduced Alchemy to Amestris, though he made Amestris merely to create another, bigger circle. The alchemy Father has is the core Alchemy taught in Xerxes, which he taught Hohenheim. However, Alkahestry was different to Alchemy because Hohenheim learned Xingese practices to alter the Alchemy to learn Ishval is on the edge of the desert that is between Amestris and Xing, Xerxes is in the middle. You may be confused since Ishvalans slummed in the Xerxes ruins after the war People say that, but the death of Lust is very significant since they needed to show the mortality of the enemy, they couldn't take so many Ls and not get a win somewhere If you miss Lust just squint when you look at Asami Well RIP my headphone ears Bring AJ in for the home stretch, let him soak up your tears

17:36 We just _saw_ what the purpose of having two stones was... in case he lost one (or it ran out of charge), he had another. Good surprise element, too... no one would expect he'd have _two_ philosopher's stones (heck, most people wouldn't expect him to have _one_ at all).

Wonder why Ed didn't thin the bar out with alchemy before they removed it - still would have had to patch himself up, but wouldn't have had to drag his insides along shrapnel.

It took until my second rewatch of a reaction video to notice the shape of the eye they made with that distant shot after Ed healed himself. That's some clever symbolism there.
