Just because their relationship isn't sexual doesn't mean its platonic. They are much more than friends. Arakawa herself said the reason R&R aren't married at the end of the series is because of military regs (they could no longer be superior and subordinate if they married)

The whole idea of this scene is Riza basically saying love = staying alive for that one person and protecting them. She knows about this because this is how her and Roy are, they focus on staying alive and protecting each other over all. And the whole "we're just childhood friends and blablabla" doesn't even phase her, because she also knows Roy since they were teenagers (or probably before we can't know exactly) and well she knows that excuse is bullsh*t. But Ed/Win is basically written in parallel to Roy/Riza, its just that Roy and Riza are adults, with a lot of tragedy/war and they know better about love, responsabilities and protecting the person they care about.

They do more to hurt then help which is a problem. That’s what I love about anime, everything isn’t one dimensional. These anime women are feminine but they aren’t scared to voice out their opinions and stand up so there’s a balance to it which makes them even feel more real a little bit. Western media now makes women more masculine and men more feminine. So there’s no balance to it. Don’t write FEMALE characters, write Female CHARACTERS and make them human. There are men out there who could write decent female anime characters. I don’t look at everything just because it’s a women and it’s a man. Instead how about both genders work together and complement that to happen to make society a better place is why I love FMAB I just finished it last week.

I adore this moment on so many levels. Ed and Hawkeye have such a heartfelt bonding moment and then Hawkeye says that line about Ed protecting Winry because he loves her (by this admission you can tell she loves Roy, who she protects). His feelings mirror her own during Ishval and how she gave pause when he said he felt horrible about killing even to protect her… probably was how she felt about killing in Ishval. And her gently speaking to him, she’s being very big sister/maternal here. Like she wants to protect Edward and Winry from the harsh realities they would end up living through. It’s such great stuff. And it’s also all of those things along with being funny with Ed’s over the top reaction to her calling him out on loving Winry.
