Listening to the Athletic's United podcast "Talk Of The Devils" this morning, they said they'd never been able to find any credible evidence that Southgate is a real candidate for the United job. Yet, you continue to focus on him as the likely successor. Who are your sources? Or, is the spectre of Southgate being used to close down discussion on replacing Ten Hag? It is painfully clear that ETH is hopelessly out of his depth, and replacing him as soon as possible is the only sensible decision.

It’s not going to get much better under ETH. Southgate isn’t much of a manager but we really just need someone to shore up the defence and fix the vibe/identity. Big clubs tend to be vibe/identity based. The players buy into it and the manager gives them the tools to express that identity. He can do that much. United were once “school of excellence” Real Madrid “we win the champions league” Barcelona “we play the best football” We’ll get it right. The club is all that matters. Players need to be reminded though.

Any manager brave enough to take the Utd job after seeing the way Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho, Ole and Ragnick were treated by the players, the board, the fans and the media deserves the time and backing to get it right. I hate that kind of usual excuse. If the Man Utd fanbase is spoiled rotten, then what are the fanbases at Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich look like when sacking managers is part of their DNA? A Bayern Munich manager can now get sacked for just winning the Bundesliga while sucking in Europe. The real answer is that those other fanbases have accepted to get rid of the old notion that the manager is a central figure at any club in 2024. The real central figures are people like Berrada, Ashworth and Wilcox because that is how top football clubs work nowadays. The "manager" is and should be nothing more than a head coach nowadays, easily expendable when that person doesn't deliver the goods with the players who are brought in for him by the people above.

I am quite neutral to the manager decision, but INEOS has to do something, and does something quickly enough. If they decide to find an interim manager, they need to do it now, but in the meantime they need to tell the players that this is also their last chance if they want to have a future at united. We can't sack a manager bring in another one and just let him deal with the same mentality we had seen in the past decade again. The players are not blameless, especially those deadwood players who do not run to create space or close down opposition players. Hold both the manager and the players accountable.

Aston Villa got Monchi in from Sevilla in the summer of 2023, to finalizing their sporting structure. We implemented our sporting structure, finally, after a decade, this summer, with key people not arriving until July, w/ it also being a major tournament summer - meaning its harder to recruit/negotiate for players while also leading to a truncated and disjointed preseason. That said, there has been clear improvement and a visible game model in place - w/ the two pressing centrally - usually the 9 and the 10 - w/ the wingers wide and the 6 and 8 creating a box. Liverpool and Tottenham games are the exception to the season so far. And also totally unacceptable. This, at least to me, can only come down to the players not saddling up, and not showing up. They couldn’t pass, run, or communicate, they were reactionary from the off. As a coach you can put the players in the best positions, you can teach them not to think and you can yell and scream at them until you are blue in the teeth, BUT the one thing a coach can’t do, is make you kick the ball or run. At some point the tether ends. It’s a long term project, three months in from the start. All that money spent before hand is irrelevant.

There's a way to lose and theres a way to lose. If you lose a game by 3 goals but we can see the players working hard, doing there best, and having shots at goal etc, and then we see the manager on the touch line really impacting the way the game is going by making key decisions, and also playing your best team playing together consistently, then supporters can be patient, even in the pain of the process. I am so tired of reading simple minded fans blame the manager with the same arguments about money spent and time in charge. The money spent can just as well work against the manager. It creates pressure on him and we know the recruitment team before Ineos spent money poorly. One of the first things rumoured to be said from Sir Jim to the previous directors in charge for recruitment was: "Why did you spend 70M euros on Casemiro?" The age and transfer fees don't add up. Clearly Ineos have done things differently with younger players, lower wages and has now asked for patience. Why can't fans and the media show some patience? Because they're simple minded or looking for attention. Clicks and views. What generates more? Succesful United or struggling United? We all know the answer. This is ten Hag's first 6 league games with the new structure. There are margins that go against United that could make the picture look abit softer. Like the least impactful offside we've ever seen vs Brighton. Scoring vs Palace wouldn't be too much to ask for. Players could've picked up some better stats by just a little more quality vs Fulham and Liverpool f,ex. so could've easily been 5 more points if Brighton and Palace were won by those small margins that were there. There's been alot of changes to the team as we started the season with alot of new players and some injuries. One thing is certain for me. I do not demand United to challenge for the title this year. Just want to see these new players come in and integrate well to the team. Luke Shaw and Malacia needs to get back so we can have a natural LB that can cross the ball into the box to feed our strikers and let Rashford take up positions closer to the goal instead of staying out wide to create..

Every manager this happens. I admit I was optimistic at the start if the season even after a few poor results. Things looked to be improving. But it is just the same old. I don't know what the answer is. But is a new manager the answer now? Who did we get? There's no one out there that I think is better than Ten Hag. Southgate. For me that would be the worse thing we could do. Ruud? That one ok. But even then he is still part of this coaching staff which is, in part responsible for these results. Tuchel? He isn't a long term manager so no for me. Ole? I still feel we played some of the best football under Ole and would loved to see him get a chance with the way Ineos have set up. For me payers like Rashford. Who can be a world beater some games and Sunday league the next game. I do feel is attitude can be off sometimes too. We had a decent transfer window but do you think those 5 players took us ahead of the 8th place we were in last season? I dont. Look at last years league finish and which of those teams are we better than over a season? The only one i can see is possibly newcastle but we will see how they do going forward they have a squad that can show more consistency than we do honestly. Mercedes won everything and now they don't. They are the kiss of death for sport teams. We were fucked the second they won the bidding war.

How the team, squad and style of play can be soooooo poor with all the money spent under ETH blows my mind. That of course is not all down to him but he is a large part of that and sadly as know when things go well its down to the players but when things go bad its mostly the managers fault but I think for once they may be right here.
@GuttsdoyleАй бұрын
If we bring in Southgate, personally I won't watch another Utd game until the day he is sacked. If results go bad against Porto/Villa. Bring Ole back to work along side Ruud. Go back to double pivot with Case and Ugarte. Simplify our whole game back to pure counter attacking football and get to the end of the season with some respectability in-tact. In summer find the best possible manager in world football, employed or unemployed and pay them and/or their current club whatever they want to come to Utd.

I dunno Jay. Southgate is not a club manager. Who would want it? Who can we actually poach from someone else?

For me, if we do sack ETH I don't want Ruud as an interim. Either give him the job or sack him too. If we have him as an interim who's to stop a new guy coming in and not wanting Ruud around?

F the Jan window. Stop spending more money good after bad. Wait till we have a manager in place with a defined, established and repeatable style of play them back him to the hilt. We have good football players, at least good enough one's not to be 12th after 6 games. Clearly half of them can't or won't play this managers system.

again..i love football..as an american who played at a high level a long time ago....the way the premier league dumps managers etc is unbelievable. The fans need to stay strong and back the club...the negativity creeps in so quickly. Who else is gonna build and kick the team in the fookin ass?
@charleseddem7042Ай бұрын
I'm thinking ETH doesn't really understand the aggression of the prem..OGS also said that he wasn't in favour of the aggressive game when he was in charge...that has left us toothless and unfearded..mourinho was an ego problem...VAN GAAL was the only one who took no shit and tried to mould the team in a certain direction..what we need is someone who knows that a certain amount off anger and aggression and never say die attitude is what we need..its the bosses job to get into the players head and wind them up for the game...its clear this doesn't happen

Southgate would firstly make us hard to beat which is a start and back to basics.
@johnbamford2658Ай бұрын
United's main problem at the moment is a lack of athleticism and length, first and foremost in midfield, and secondly in defense. When they lose compactness, they are the easiest team in the league to pass through, run through. Ugarte was meant to be a solution in this regard, but yesterday showed that he is limited in terms of his ability to cover space. Mainoo is a slow midget. De Ligt is good but slow. Why were United able to beat City? Because they remained compact throughout the match. Tottenham are long and athletic and good on the ball, and United were the opposite of compact. This is why Tottenham had their way with them.

My issue is a lack of consistency. We saw it last season and there has been no change. This is all down to the manager. There is still no team identity or style of play. ETH is not an inspiring man. The team don't seem to be playing for him or the badge. I would bring Ole back....
