I know they're both "overdrive" pedals, but the OCD is more of a stand alone (and much more versatile) pedal and the Tube Screamer is more like a boost pedal. If you're just using a tube screamer to get your gain/distortion/etc, you're going to be a little let down. If you're using a tube screamer on top of other pedals or on top of your amp's gain channel? That is where the thing shines and can be dialed in to really create a unique sound or 'signature'. The OCD is the full package. It is the sliced bread and the toaster. Tube Screamers are the butter.

@The House Of Klaus. Very true, have an OCD (V1.4), great pedal, stand alone into a clean fender amp; great OD/Distortion at comfortable volume. Just bought a Tubescreamer (Mini), not really get much from it. BUT stacked into the OCD the TS EQ curve brings up the mid/highs well. Tried the SRV method of min drive, max level on the TS, but the amp is so clean/headroom, the TS doesn't do much on its own.
@benink56902 жыл бұрын
@@SaxJockey Can't an EQ pedal do that?
@SaxJockey2 жыл бұрын
@@benink5690 Not quite. Seem to recal that Brian Wampler has done a video on that subject. Yes, an EQ pedal can boost/cut selected frequencies, but it does not add that 'little extra' something. In the case of the TS it adds mid boost, gain and grit (i.e. it colours the tone, not just adding volume like an EQ pedal).

IMO this is like comparing oranges to apples: The OCD is an OD-Distortion pedal, great to be used on its own. The TS is a booster-soft OD pedal, usually used to push or colour an already distorted amp. Rarely used on it own. Both are great pedals but very different

Nice Comparison Simon. There is no Right or Wrong Choice. It is all Dependent on: what type of sound you are looking-for, what type of music you play, your Amp, Pickups, Guitar and how each pedal Interacts with your Other Pedals & Effects. I will say that the TS-9 is more Compressed ( and a true overdrive ). The OCD ( is a hybrid OD / Distortion ) and is more open sounding. A More Versatile Pedal ( i.m.o. ) The OCD can dial-in just about any sound, from a Stevie Ray / Blues Crunch to a Zeppelin / Van Halen Sound. Loads of Tonal Options. Great to have both on the board. Note that the OCD has a Hi/Low Pass switch and you've left it on Hi Pass throughout the test. So the OCD always sounds brighter, a little less "round," maybe a little harsher through the whole test. The Ibanez doesn't have an HP/LP filter so it isn't exactly a one-to-one. A fairer comparison might switch between HP/LP on the OCD so you can hear what they both sound like relative to the Ibanez, since that's kinda the benchmark OD pedal since forever.

I run both of these pedals on my board. My full on searing lead sound (which is just my name for max overdrive) for years of gigging is both on at the same time, the TS drive at about 12 o'clock and the mids up a bit and the OCD drive at a little less than 12 and the mids cut slightly. I play through a 4x10 Deville. Though now I'm thinking maybe I should boost the mids on the OCD more and dial them on the TS back a little. Anyways, the sound is creamy and thick.

Thank you sir. Your video is one of the few shootouts I watched in its entirety. Sensible comparison, side by side, and no need to guess which pedal is on (unlike some others who are interested in showing themselves but not the pedal, leaving me guessing). The Tube Screamer is more mellow, and changes the original sound less that the OCD. The OCD seems to be bordering on distortion, but perhaps that's because it was in HP mode. Perhaps LP would sound more equivalent to the TS. All round great video. No bells and whistles, only what is needful for a comparison. May I suggest that you play "Mary had a little lamb" should you do another comparison video :-) Well done.

I've got the Keeley Red Dirt (his tubescreamer clone but with tweaks and improvements) and it sounds fantastic in the normal mode, but it has a sort of HP mode just like the OCD does which increases the gain and the bite (I believe it used to be called the power mod when keeley was just nodding tubescreamers). It works perfectly as a classic rock overdrive with humbuckers. But what I love about the sound of the OCD in every KZbin video I've seen is that it can make single coils in the bridge absolutely roar, don't even need a humbucker. So I'm gonna buy the OCD soon I think. Can play with just a strat and have the really bitey and huge sounding power chords with the bridge pickup and the OCD, then flip to the neck pickup and the keeley tubescreamer for SRV lead tone. Perfect combo IMO

DISCLAIMER: I'm a newcomer to this stuff, so I don't know whether that makes my impressions more valuable or less valuable. But anyway . . . I preferred the character of the *sound* out of the OCD. I just liked the way it sounded more. HOWEVER, the creator of the video was (correctly) trying to keep the two pedals at the same output volume, because of the well-known psychological effect that people perceive small differences in volume as differences in quality -- and my eyes were drawn to the fact that even though the two pedals were putting out about the same amplitude sound (in terms of how loud it seemed to me, listening), the OCD was turned much further down in volume than the TS was. In other words, it looks/sounds to me like the OCD is a very loud pedal, and so for most people only a small range of the volume knob is actually useable. True or false?
@kampfkustomer23434 жыл бұрын
'Volume' in this sense is relative. I know the terminology is confusing, but you're talking about Output Gain, or just Output. Typically the 'gain' knob is *input* gain, which effects how distorted the sound becomes, which is why this same control is often just labeled 'distortion'. These pedals, despite being capable of generating their own distortion, are often used as a 'clean boost'. Ie they act as a preamp boosting the signal coming from the instrument. Which can be anything from literally boosting a clean tone, to taking a slightly overdriven Marshall and boosting into molten metal territory. In this case, the OCD would be capable of far more distortion sourced from clean boost. Very common. Metal & Hardcore players with bassy, scooped Rectifier & 5150 style amps love the TS9 to tighten their low end (actually reducing it slightly) and adding a touch more gain. If you were to run a clean boost in the effects loop, though, what you would get rather than higher gain/distortion, is a volume boost, ie the amp became louder, rather than just more distorted. Hope that helped.
@wrencormier5134 жыл бұрын
I recently bought an OCD pedal and I will turn the volume knob all the way up and turn my amp down, same volume but the pedal providing the volume gives it a very different sound
@jeffallan37619 жыл бұрын
Wow.. such a diff. way more highs with OCD, now that makes it sound a bit thinner toned. The TS9 just adds such silk, smooth tone. It has that signature thing. Instant SRV lead tone. Thick. You don't hear that high end fizzy grainy tone much. I don't think one is better than the other at all. If you run into a brighter articulate amp, the TS9 is your best friend.
@petemarinovich16 жыл бұрын
Fantastic video. Thanks. To my ears the OCD is more "out front." With that extra presence it would cut through a mix more effectively. OTOH, The TS is much smoother and creates an environment with more depth, more musical. I would definitely go for the TS in a power trio. In a larger band with keys and horns, etc., I might go with the OCD.

Will depend on your gear and taste; I use a Marshall 1959hw with a Les Paul and Strat and in both cases the TS makes the most out of the amp tone. The ocd lacks mids and interferes too much with the amp natural tone, doesn’t cut through the mix much ether as it gets “spongy.” Just my experience.

I like the TS9, but I've noticed that just having it in the pedal chain affects the guitar's tone, cutting some of the brightness and clarity imo. I've heard the OCD is true bypass, which would appeal to people "OCD" about their tone. I haven't tried the OCD for myself, but have been really thinking of making a switch to OCD or another true bypass pedal. I guess the only way to make a "true" comparison of the tone difference would be to have a bypass loop that switches between them, or by switching cables. etc.

@alexmarenco23993 жыл бұрын
The OCD can give a better sound paired with a RAT since it breaks better in high frequencies and has a better response from you lower frequencies. The TS is basically a midboost. The LP function in the OCD can make the pedal sound like a TubeScreamer. You get more with an OCD honestly. They call it Overdrive/Distortion because it has a Drive range is wider than any other overdrive pedal. This means essentially that the Drive knob is more sensitive and when you crank it it will sound more than your average soft clipping overdrive. Dont let throw you off from pairing it with a heavy distortion pedal like your RAT.

Both are great. I put the 535q crybaby, then these two guys, then my other pedals through the fx loop and I'm pretty happy on most rigs..Both have more than enough drive...Id say the fulltone can scoop out some mids where the ts808 I use for some rythymn mid range crunch but also is great for leads..Not that it can't go heavy they both can.... Both are fine pedals. Set up play around till you get what you want for what your doing. I may check out a maxxon because I want to also maybe set a third one for very light OD. If I'm using my Fender Twin (doesn't have an fx loop) I still use both. Funny thing, the orange rocktron I have has better Overdrive than both on the other channel so sometimes I just use a boost and just swith channels. Depends what I'm playing through and what for. Both a good and grab what works for you. peace.

I have an ocd V2 and whether I flip the switch to HP or even LP the led stays blue as opposed to a red led for hp ive seen more frequently
@Demetrius-Silva7 жыл бұрын
Why TS9's led has to be without any brightness? Only con of this pedal.

OCD in lp setting gets you a ballpark bluesbreaker tone.

I personally prefer the OCD. Great video!

I think TS for low gain and OCD for high gain. I like to have two drive pedals in my chain. That's what I'm going for.

I've seen a few of your videos on pedals and I wanted to get your advice on effects pedals, one I read about earlier is a Boss ME 80, do you think effects pedals are worth the money?
@SimonSmithGuitar9 жыл бұрын
J Wilder Hiya. I think SOME are yes. What are you looking to get? An ME 80?
@JTPMcC9 жыл бұрын
Simon Smith yep. But I know a guy who has a Boss G10 second hand. I read reviews for the ME 80 and got good reviews.

+J Wilder - multi effects units are typically very good value for money compared with stompboxes. multi effects are especially affordable second hand, it seems. it depends what route you want to take: multi or stompbox. If you get a smaller sized multi effects then you could still combine it on a board with stompboxes, if you then decide to get into stompboxes. I think multi effects are much better at delay and reverb type effects than they are at dirty sounds. Keep an eye out for an affordable second-hand Line 6 M9 unit; it's modest;y sized, has loads of stuff on it; and has a looper too.

J Wilder I'm probably late to your decision but as someone who owns a ME80, it is a great pedal, and I use it for modulation, the looper/expression pedal, delays, boost, comp and everything else except dirty sounds and just for the life of me I could could never get a good natural sounding dirt tone. I've used it through my Blues JR tube amp, my orange solid state, and vox modeling amp, it always sounds gritty fizzy and digital no matter how I play with it. So I just use dirt boxes of my choice before it to get my ds/od sound, and I use the various extra effects on the ME to dial on specifics

The TS9 is a classical overdrive hence it’s made to use in a crunchy amp, not in a clean amp, that’s why it sounds so bad in this video. But OCD is a modern overdrive,, ir sounds good in cleaning amps, TS9 is best for vintage music style and OCD for modern music.

Should have had the OCD in LP since HP has too much headroom.

Two completely different animals. Tube Screamer is best used as a clean boost to an already overdriven amp (volume up, gain down). OCD is best used as your source of dirt in front of a clean amp. Both great pedals, just very different.

To me the OCD can sound like the TS but with more versatility. Just leave it on HP and turn down the Tone knob. I had both, but kept the OCD!
@necurrence17764 жыл бұрын
I tried both but I'm only keeping the OCD. I can make the OCD sound like a Tube screamer(kinda) but I could not make a Tube Screamer sound like an OCD. I only got vintage pickups and a boutique clean amp, I need to go from clean to full blown metal. And the Tube Screamer just doesn't perform like that, even with Compressor and another Distortion pedal, which was horrible btw.

Crank that boutique clean amp and slam it with the TS9.

TS all the way, a real overdrive. The OCD is a kind of semi-distortion for me. And sounds great also.
@andremellao48827 жыл бұрын
The tone is different from the pedals. You should have set it before ( less on the OCD )
@LOoUsAmulTnbled4 жыл бұрын
With high gain the OCD ruins the TS the sweet mids and highs are just choked out
