Having both pedals and done similar tests I had to go back and listen to my tones. I run the OCD at 18v and this prevents the clipping from hitting the ceiling of the OCD when the TS goes before. Whether volume or gain it’s all gain in this position. Therefore running it with low gain and about 3 o’clock is where I like mine. I run my OCD a little hotter than you. If the TS is after the OCD, when I engage that I am immediately presented with the TSs character even “just” as a boost. It pushes the mids and is a great solo sound. Finally. I decided in the end to go OCD and the TS just in front. It dirties up the OCD but tightens it to push thru the mix. However, I’m pretty much always running into other gain options (WA MESSNER - JOYO AMERICAN - MORNING GLORY 4 (w/red switch). So a LOT of permutations. In the signal chain I have a Keeley Compressor after my gain stage before a spark when I want a clean boost after. All that goes thru the Neunaber Iconoclast My interests now are in loop switchers and trying to leave behind one gain pedal has become a painful proposition. Great video and content.

A good rule of thumb is whichever pedal retains more low end goes first in the chain. If Overdrive #1 has more bass than overdrive #2, overdrive 1 goes first to balance out the low end frequencies/boost pedal #2.

rule of thumb is basically the same thing as assuming. you know what they say about assuming. your statement is based on one opinion. some people might want to drive the bass even more depending on genre and what effect they want in that particular genre of music. rule of thumb really is... putting a lighter drive before a heavier drive will make the sound thicker and grittier and can make it mushy... lighter drive after the heavier drive is really more for tone shaping almost like an eq or for a boost. but hey that just more assumptions... now on my part... cheers!

Thanks a lot, man. Great and useful test(very good playing too). I preferred TS before the OCD, in every sotuations. I liked the "fuller" sound. It feels more bassy and gritty. I think Tube Screamer after the OCD depletes all the OCD tipical punch. Even if this solution gives an interesting and original mid-rangy outcome.

Thank you very much Yari. Yes the TS into an OCD is the way to go, for me. I'd be interested to do a similar video with different drives to see whether I always favour a boost before, or if it just because of how much the TS influences the EQ when placed after a drive. Thanks for watching mate! What drives are you using?
@yaripedone217

@@AlexisGuitars thanks for your answer Alexis, I played drums for many years with various bands, but I own a'89 Fender hm strat I use to play for my personal compositions and other production experiments. I play and study a bit of bass too, for 4 years and I'm looking for assembling a multi-purpose pedalboard suitable for both bass and guitar. I know it's a complex work, but I'd like to choose drives suitable (with quite good compromise) for both the instruments. For the bass (an active Ibanez, EDC715) I usually use a youtube modded behringer bdi21, where I can eliminate the mid scoop curve and bypass the bandpass filter to get more mids by two switches. I like to try a TS808 clone and modding it for having (via switch) another fequency cut (around lowB)to alternate a guitar/bass use. Talking about the guitar I recently used to go full digitally, via soundcard and amplitube emulating the drive of Ts808 driving rat-simile or boss ds distortions, then Mesa or Marhall amp simulators, but I miss the 'sound' of capacitors and resistors too much. Sorry for the messy/long reply ^_^
@AlexisGuitars
@AlexisGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Cool! I know what you mean with one pedalboard. I also like a streamlined approach but that must be tricky making that work for bass and guitar together all the time. Might be easier for modulation but drives sometimes sound different with different guitars let alone between instruments haha

@@AlexisGuitars It's basically how Allan Holdsworth gets his midrange tone. The secret is the sweet spot using the guitar volume and tone control first. You have to use your ear. It's just cascaded overdrive with not too much gain. I'm going to stack another Tubescreamer after my Joyo to smooth it even further. The great thing is by cascading them properly you reduce a lot of noise too whilst 'Gaining' sustain.

Best use of a TS is for stacking, placed before your main ODs / preamps, and used more as a boost. It should sound like absolute garbage on its own, but like heaven when combined with a klon(e), BB preamp, Timmy, or (my current favorite) a Hampstead Odyssey. TS placed first, volume up, gain down, and tone down to where, again, it sounds pretty bad on its own. All others coming after, should be set pretty much to their sweet spot on their own, but fill out and punch even better with the TS stacked in. It allows your main ODs to sound great as-is, and have just enough gain for leads, also cleaning up when volume is rolled back, and then once TS is engaged before it, will bring in more punch, lows, and gain by driving both your OD pedal and amp. Never did like any TS circuit on their own or stacked after another, though, but everybody's different.

For me I run a TS in the middle of my chain. It cuts the lows and highs, given it’s EQ characteristics. I find that is needed sometimes! So usually all low gain first like Blues Breaker and Klon…Then a TS to cut the lows and highs to focus on mids. If I want a boost I can use the Blues Breaker into it. However I like my TS in front of any high gain drives to goose it and for leads! I see a lot of people run a TS first before low gain drives, and I find it a bit weird. Because they say they do it to retain the lows and highs. And use the TS as a boost to the mids. At that point might as well as do the BB>Klon combo. Because by not liking the EQ of the TS and avoiding it…do you really need a TS? Why not get a full band EQ boost and set the mids higher as a first pedal then? I go morning glory(Klon after is optional) then TS and my heavier gain pedals like Rat or DLS to push for solo or more gain. I like the TS to cut out my low gain lows and Highs for Rhythm cut, as well as a cool old school flavor. The Strokes use a Jekyl and Hyde with a boost or Klon in front. Or a boost on each side of the pedal. It’s a thinner mid sound..but it sounds cool. They made that the main sound of the band! Maybe because no one else was using a TS EQ sound as a main pedal. I usually see many Indie Rock players with a light gain Transparent OD like a Blues Breaker as a pint of break up. Tubescreamer then heavy drives last. Optionally if you really one a high mid range solo boost…use a Treble Booster as a first pedal! But I find TS after low gain combos like BB and Klon. Then TS before heavy like RAT, DLS or Crunch Box. That way you get the best of both worlds, and can use the low gains to focus a TS pedal! I don’t get why people put the TS first to avoid the EQ cut on low gain…just get a spark boost with EQ and boost the mids then. If the OCD is cranked, then yeah put the TS behind it as a MIAB pedal. TS slay in front of high gain pedals. But in front of low gain, it loses its EQ stack and seems pointless to me. Because then you can only run the mix cut sound of the TS by itself! Unless you want to add a boost to the front of it. But if low gain already up front..that is your boost!
@AlexisGuitars
@AlexisGuitars Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that! Since making this video I only really stack a TS into a higher gain drive. I normally just keep my lower gain pedals set to where I like them so they each do different things. Still a whole world of tone/gain stacking for me to discover
@mattg082
@mattg082 Жыл бұрын
@@AlexisGuitars yeah there’s no wrong way. But I see so many buy a TS, hate the thin sound and then place it first in chain before low gain. As we know your last stack pedal will be the EQ. I find having a morning glory first at point of break is great for a base sound. Maybe put a boost first then the MG and set the EQ, to do whatever. The TS after low gain I find it works well, to push out in the band. And you can use that light breakup gain to make it more focused whether a BB style or a boost. But a TS into heavy drive is great for juicing thing up, and soloing. I dunno I find mid focus goosed up a bit to be really cool for Rhythm parts in a band. Also you can explore new sounds with this. And your not losing anything because you can use the TS to boost the next gainstage after. That works for me well! But yeah I find a cheap Spark with EQ would do better in front of a Low gain pedal if you want that…because then you can control his much highs, mids and lows you want…along with more gain push. So to me it just makes since! But if it’s your only two pedals, I could see having the TS first depending on style and genre. But if someone want a mid boost for solos…dude a treble boost will do it! Like a Beano or something. Seriously the TB is my favorite underrated pedal for that kind of stuff. It works on every pedal…and some songs I just keep it on the entire time!

Sometime use also the classic boss ds1(before always) and ts9 after. when run the solos i play IN 2 MOD: 1)OCD into TS9 or DS1 into TS9. I ASSURE YOU THAT I TESTED THOUSANDS OF DISTORSOR / OVERDRIVES BUT IN THE END I WENT BACK TO THESE THREE(DS1-OCD-TS9)
@AlexisGuitars

haha well the classics are classics for a reason! I also keep things simple with overdrives, for years I only used an OCD and a clean boost for solos, then switched to a TS when I got an amp with a better dirt channel

That sounds like a really versatile gain-rig. Nice! I really like the idea of a TS before and after. I've toyed with that idea in the past. What fuzz are you using?

That's the simple rule, but you also need to consider eq changes. The TS after OcD doesn't just boost volume it completely changed the tone.

That would be awesome! I haven't tried a pedal that is based on these two together, but maybe have a look at the Jam Double dreamer. It's basically a TS and a higher gain pedal all in one with lots of options. I haven't tried one, but I think it's my dream pedal haha. Thanks for watching mate! Edit: the TS comes after in that pedal, so maybe not quite what you're looking for!
