This is a very elaborate and great setup. I love the Fat Dragon Games terrain, they are very nice to play with. As soon as you showed the Fog Monster I was wondering which method of fogging they used. Fog machines use special liquid which is heated to create a dense fog. This will leave a little residue. I prefer to use those little ultrasonic devices that create cold steam. Good thing is that this 'steam' is cold so it will hardly condensate on your terrain but it will also evaporate quickly so there is less of a fogging effect. What is nice, is that these things are small, cheap and can run on batteries so they are easier to include in your terrain.

This is absolutely amazing! So much work for this! Something I'd thought of to have the map not be revealed is to use blankets, probably several separate ones and not too thin so they leave indents to the rooms. Let them act as "fog of war" and you reveal bits of it by rolling the blankets or removing the sections to the halls and rooms they'd be aware and see. Not perfect, but would certainly keep much later parts of the map concealed until they've "earned" to see it.
@TableFlipFoundry4 жыл бұрын
The way we handle this is by making sure the party finds a map of the area first. It justifies their knowledge of the layout. Then any monsters, props and traps get added in as they progress. Especially on a map this big, its pretty much the only way to do it.
@sebastianioanpop38953 жыл бұрын
@@TableFlipFoundry also blankets can mess up tiny details if the material touches the more loose components of the build, ideally what you'd do in a scenario where the players are not supposed to know the area is create fog of war pillars. The idea behind it is to have a number of adjustable height pillars (print them in pairs so they slot into each other) then you can use them in key areas, and on top of those you can put your cloth, of course those pillars would need to be bottom weighted so as not to tip when the cloth is extracted, any metal will do. The ideal cloth would be silk with tiny metal rings added in 4 corners (with enough material left to overhang 3-5 centimeters) the rings would connect to your FOW pillar caps. This looks like the type of spare-no-expenses channel so if you want to go the extra-extra mile there are more crazy things that can be done (oh the Fog of war option allows you to also pre-populate the dungeon with minis so they are encounter ready)

You spent a great deal of time on this , if you would like to have 'fog' in certain areas you could put a freezer unit ( standard reverse Rankine cycle re-purposed freezer unit would work ) under the table with tubes from the freezer box to the locations on the map you would like to have fog ( you might have to humidity control the room or add misters to parts of the map for this to have the effect you like )

Let me add a few simple suggestions to make this a *LOT* easier on you... I am going to presume you are using *some* kind of keylock system for the tiles (I hope so!) First off, put some kind of masking or duct tape across the bottom of "rooms" to keep them together as a module, a little bit of blu-tac putty here and there can help hold the sides and still be removable for reconfiguration of parts. Next is to place each module onto a piece of stiff cardboard cut to size, again using blu-tac or similar so each room can be handled easily. This also allows for vertical storage on something like a standard wire bakers rack. Next is to invest in a little bit of styrofoam... a typical 2 or 3 inch sheet costs about the same as a spool of filament and can now provide the support for making multiple layers (why bother "3D printing" empty space?) This would let you do those "Deep" areas and can even give you a small amount of "overhang" off the table for those little details that are just a bit too wide. Finally, get a bit of cheap cotton or even old bed sheets and cut out pieces that are of various size squares and triangles. Get yourself a bag of pillow fiberfill and a can of spray on glue. Lay your cut out fabric onto a large cardboard or painter's plastic backing and spray a couple light coats of glue. Next fluff out the fiberfill into a wispy cloud like consistency and place onto the glue covered cloth and let dry. As a last step you can lightly spritz spray can gray paint very lightly to give a hint of gray "fog" appearance... These can now be used to cover "Unkown" areas individually... These are things I have done with miniatures, even before 3D printing was a thing... these are rather simple tricks, but they can save hours of setup, enhance the gameplay with actual "mysterious areas", and add new surprises for the players! It also allows for easier moving around of different "room" elements and can even still be broken down to reconfigure into other "rooms" or area shapes...
@TableFlipFoundry4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the advice! I'll definitely use some of them in the future!

I know this is two years old but I have seen some DMs take Amazon boxes, mark them with a section, and then when the players can see that they open the box that has the section of dungeon pre-assembled and adds it on. If you have a locking mechanism anyway. This is one main problem with magnetic tiles. If you are a 'off the cuff' DM and make things up as you go magnetic is fine but if you are a DM that plays by a map then locking tiles with marked Amazon boxes is the way to go.

Blender is a good free modeling program and has a CAD program built in and you can hook the fbx/obj to the 3d printer. If your not worried about modifications like can substitute this wall to make a new tunnel. Model the full map in the 3d modeling program as you are working with a module map. Seperate the map by rooms/tunnels into their own collections this way when turned on or off show them as one full scene/map or section like fog of war. Then make a plane that is the dementions of your 3d printers ideal print space remove the plane but keep edges and extrude the lines down so you get hollow cubes using an array modifier to tile it and use that as a template to cut the rooms into quadrents or chunks using a boolean modifier. As well as cut floor levels. If you start with the lowest floor of the dungeon at 0 you will be able to measure height of the floor of the model from 0 and can use foam blocks as risers/platforms based on the measurements. Most 3d software has Cm/inch for realworld measurements so cutting the foam to that height is no problem. If you want to make sure the walls "snap" you can always make rails and notches where you made your cuts so walls slide into eachother vertically. Just some ideas.

This looks great! I always loved 3D terrain but never had the money or the skill to get it for my groups. Now that I have the money, I've moved away from D&D-style dungeon hack & slash rpgs and don't need this terrain any more... One question remains though: As a DM I've always tried to reveal the dungeon layout as the players explored it. In this case, the players can see the whole thing right from the start. Of course the players should be able to differentiate between player knowledge and character knowledge, but still this wouldn't be perfect for me. Building the dungeon as the group advances would be cumbersome as well - dang...

Well done Sir! It's clear that you are a stickler for details and like things exactly as they are designed. In this case, your design changes seem totally appropriate. Your clan is lucky to have you on their team. Dedicated teammates regardless of the endeavor, are hard to find and too few and far between. Regardless of the state of condition, your 3d print space is awesome and has given me so ideas on how to set up my own print space(I currently have 3 FDM and 2 Resin printers) especially, the use of the Ultra Sonic cleaners as a modified print wash station. Quick question about that, Are there any shortcomings to using the ultrasonic cleaners instead of a traditional wash and cure station? I'm asking because I currently have a UV cure system and was considering buying a wash station, but I already own an ultrasonic cleaner? If your setup works well, I go that route instead and save the 100+ dollars. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Again, Great job on such a massive undertaking!! Side note: Have you considered designing a custom more theme-appropriate enclosure for your fog monster? Its a shame to have such a cool piece of equipment not being able to be used.

Thanks so much man! I have seen no downside to using sonic cleaners. Make sure yours is stainless steel if you're using IPA in it. The cheap plastic ones end up disolving. Also be aware that many people will give you safety warnings regarding using a sonic cleaner with ipa. That said, I've been using them for years. I have 3 that are running every day now. Never had issues.

I used a combination of Warlock tiles and home grown styrofoam cliff/cave pieces for my map. I need to get filament for my 3D printer.
@TableFlipFoundry2 жыл бұрын
I want to keep working on some more traditional forms of crafting like foam and such. I rely on my printers a LOT.

this is fantastic. i love everything you did. i will be giving your channel a major look through. how much filament did it take to print. are you willing to sell the stls?
@TableFlipFoundry11 ай бұрын
I did this years ago. I dont recall how much filament I used. I cant sell the STLs, but I outline who made each set in the video so you can find them!

how much did this cost? And I don't mean in materials only. I'm talking about time? I'm assuming that you enjoy the process. I wonder what a similar set up in prepainted dwarven forge would run?
@TableFlipFoundry4 жыл бұрын
I have "rough" estimates. 1500 hours of print time. 100 hours of painting. Maybe another 50 hours of research, repair, modifying, etc etc. Overall cost was 700 I think? Something like that. Its far far cheaper than dwarven forge though. My guess was 300 tiles overall. I never really counted.

Im so impressed man ! I just got my first printer and i would like to have a similar collection of tiles in the future ! Do you mind sharing how durable the openlock tiles are over time ? I noticed the clips are REALLY tight and i fear they might break if i use them a couple of times
@TableFlipFoundry Жыл бұрын
They break all the time. But they also cost like a penny to make. I just keep a collection of them for when they do break

Well done and very impressive, too... Would you mind providing some links to the files used in this dungeon?

an easy solution to not seing the entire map would be to put some black paper or something else opaque and easy to remove. This would allow the players to only see what they are allowed to see
@TableFlipFoundry4 жыл бұрын
So the way we handle this subject at our table is to ensure the party has found a map of the area before they arrive. That way, they already know the layout and there isnt anything spoiled by seeing it. Everything else is dropped in on the fly, like monsters or unknown terrain pieces. Then we dont have to monitor fog of war at all for such a large dungeon

Just a suggestion but I use a fabric printing company and some of my maps I put on fabric in full color, they last forever. I can send you the link if interested.

Amazing setup, but I hope you've got some ventilation in that workshop!

Isn't isopropyl alcohol in ultrasonic cleaner a big no-no? or are those blast proof ultrasonic tanks?

This is really cool. Awesome work all of you. I cringed with the tape holding the map on the wall. Such a nice print could of put it in a $5 frame. Just my opinion.

We have a very very large cork board that hadn't been installed. It serves as our "quest board" the map is on there now.

Yes, I think thats something that could be done for sure. This dungeon is done now but in the future ive got some ideas for that exact idea!

I know this is an older video, but would you suggest the qidi tech 1 to people (or is it only yours that it reliable? and what layer hight do/did you use on terrain.
@TableFlipFoundry4 жыл бұрын
I can't really speak for what other peoples machines do. So, in my experience, my Qidi Tech 1 has been a dream. For this set I printed at a .3 height to save some time. But typically I print at a .2 for terrain.

This is just. Wow! So good! I only have one question. How in the heck do you have so much time for this? What do you do for a living to be able to afford this? :O I mean you mentioned 3 months of printing. Based on the vid you made a lot of changes to the modules, all the slicing and all the painting. In 3 months? :O How in the name of god? I'd expect this to be full time 3 months :D I can barely print a few things a week and maybe paint them 2-3 weeks later :D

I work a full time job like anyone else. It just comes down to schedule. I wake up in the morning, put on coffee and get to work clearing the prints from the night before and setting up new prints. I calculate the print time for 9 hours since thats how long I work. Get all the printers going, and head out to work. When I get home, clear the printers, set up 4 hour prints, before bed. Clear the printers, set up 8 hour prints. repeat as needed.
