Fully Charged LIVE UK South 2023 - my highlights and summary incl BYD and Ora first reveals reaction

We wanted to get this out whilst the show was still on but there was so much to see and put together that it has all taken longer so count this as a round-up / summary of some of my personal highlights and reactions from just some of the many things to see at the ever-growing Fully Charged LIVE shows. This was the South event in Farnborough 28, 29 and 30th April but there are more shows in the UK and in other countries worldwide already scheduled in.
Lots to see in the day starting off with the first UK unveiling of the BYD Dolphin. The new cost-effective compact electric car offering from China. BYD stands for Build Your Dreams and is a huge company who have been specialists manufacturing batteries for many years. Their product range is ever expanding and will include other marine creature names but they are one to take very seriously.
next on the agenda was the new Ora model (yet to be named!) from Great Wall Motors GWM. Their Funky Cat is already now on the market but this new version will be coming later in the year or 2024 for Europe. Distinctive styling - what do you think?
I love the Munro MK_1 - a beast of a vehicle reminiscent of Land Rovers of course. A real utility 4x4 offroad truck
Ford F150 lightning was there and its huge!
Rivian of course but i've driven that before - check out this video: • RIVIAN R1T Part 2 - DR...
Lotus Eletre is just a thing of beauty and quite probably the car i was most impressed with. Stunning details in the flesh and a truly luxurious interior. Sports car or off road family SUV it really has it all.
The new Fisker Ocean is apparently due in the UK later this year. A very cool solar roof included. Ive driven the Fisker Karma around Texas previously when it was a plug-in hybrid and that was a great looking thing, if not that amazing to drive.
Fiat 500e Scorpionissima - what ac razy little thing with augmented sound if you like that kind of thing. Still no room for a left foot mind...
And much more besides including some very cool converted classic cars.
Surprise of the show - perhaps the Maxus Mifa 9 with some of the best passenger comfort possibly available. This seats are epic!
Then there was tons to sea indoors including a very cool VW ID Buzz cmaper which i REALLY want and lots of charging solutions to be found. I speak briefly to just one supplier of such solutions for EV owners that don't have off street parking ‪@trojanenergy‬

I'm so glad I went to my first Fully Charged Live this year. Unfortunately, I wasn't there on Friday, so I couldn't say hi. But the show was great, as was this video. Also, to the sceptics, I drove down from Cornwall in my 28kwh Ioniq, and I spent just 15 mins on the way down when I was only charging 😁

It was great to see you there filming on Friday. Its always good to get your take on things. Friday was the busiest day, with the worst weather (and the worst day for private jets taking off!). But lots to see and many interesting talks. I look forward to your review of the Ionic 6. The styling is a bit fussy in parts for me but it looks set to be another competent offering.

Maybe you should have mentioned that the show isn't just about EVs. It's also about renewable energy and home energy management. The collection of converted cars and other vehicles is great and there's a fine array of electric motorbikes. If you have no interest in EVs at all you can still find many things at the show that will make life easier and cheaper. There were some great offers, freebies and giveaways including a year's free hire of a car plus free installation of a home charger. There were loads of panels about all the relevant technical, political and financial issues. There was even an environmentally friendly cooking show. A great event. More than you could hope to fit in even if you visit on all three days as I usually do. Don't listen to naysayers, trolls, trash talkers and the proudly ignorant online. Go and see for yourself at one of these shows.

Saw you guys on the BYD stand. I would have had a chat but you were inundated with others. I sat in the Atto 3 and found it pretty good, but the Dolphin was excellent. I have never shut the doors in a vehicle which felt so tight. My buddy and I went around opening and shutting doors on various cars nearby and none were as solid and tight. And that screen was definitely cute. Was I the only one who saw the toggle on the steering wheel? Because I seemed to amaze people when the screen switched layout after I suggested it do so. 😁Great event [and nice concise video here]. I so want that Xpeng P7 over here in the UK on our roads. I think my mate wants a Rivian now, after sitting in it. I would wait for the R1S. Being over from the Netherlands, he won't have to wait for any length of time like we will. Btw, FC North - it's Harrogate. Not Huddersfield. I'm sure you knew that. 😋

@@RSEV No problem. What was your favourite "sensible" car [including any that might not have made the video]? For me it was the Dolphin, followed by the MG4, as runabouts. Oh, and the Microlino. Cars I could see myself totally falling in love with could have been any Tesla or the Xpeng P7. I so wanted to sit in that but it was locked. I totally overlooked the new Astra. Then again, that's surely just a rebadged Peugeot, which I sort of like anyway. EDIT: One thing about the MG4 that I was really disappointed about and that was the amount of wasted space under the bonnet - and no frunk. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Overall though, a nice small car.

I was at the Bangkok Motor show last month and the Maxus 9 is on sale here from MG with a 90kWh battery. A high luxury e-MPV for reasonable money

Thanks for the video. As I couldn’t make the event it was great to get your coverage. A quick note. I was really excited by the segment on Trojan so popped over to their website. It’s a brilliant looking product. But. It’s £99 month in subs and a 3 year contract. Any savings using home charging rates would be severely dented 😢

Ouch, I went to the No Driveway talk and they were on the panel. That's basically £3600 for the infrastructure costs, there's quite a lot to go under the footpath there. This makes it more useful for public or semi-public spaces; I can imagine a section of footpath without house frontages, or communal parking in private and social flats where the parking spaces are not contiguous with each home. For single homes with parking in front then the cable channel solution is much better - just needs banging heads together in the recalcitrant councils.

I think we missed running into you at the show as it was raining when the unveiling was going on. We were in the warm having an early show coffee at that time! If the back seat in the Maxis is reclined and you get in an accident you will go under the seat belt and jamb your legs into the back of the front seat and break either your knees or your hips. You should never fully recline in a car.
