My electrical engineering skills are all gleaned from KZbin instructional vids, so I decided to keep my conversion as simple as possible. I just installed a basic 12v system from the van's 12v battery for lighting and water pumping, and a simple consumer unit 240v with a couple outlets to run an induction hob and any other appliance I bring. I haven't bothered with an inverter or photovoltaics (yet), so I have to use a gas camping stove when I'm off grid. Covid landed in 2019 just as I was finishing my conversion, so I have been limiting myself to Caravan Club sites, where a Y splitter to the granny cable and my concealed commando hook up seems to work a treat for what I need. I absolutely love my electric van, and I was heavily inspired by Glynn and Amy to make the change. I am a complete EV convert now, and as soon as Triumph release their EV roadster I will be done with internal combustion for good 👍

Hello, greetings from Spain, it is incredible the trips you are doing with that electric vehicle with only 70 miles of autonomy, here you can change the batteries to have ones of more than 40wh and have more than 200 miles, but yours is another mindset. If you come to Spain again here you have a socket where you can charge the batteries. greetings handsome.

A fantastic and inspirational video. In one way it reminds me of my late dad who back in the late 1970s brought a VW van and had it converted into a camper van with an extension roof etc.. We as a family of 4 went on many holidays around France mostly, across the Pyrenees to Spain and to Switzerland and also around Scotland and the Lake District. In planning the route we avoided the motorways as much as possible so that we could stop in villages and towns to visit en route. The journey itself was very much the holiday as well as the destination. I wish you and your family every success in your sustainable adventures.

You're really smart with electrical wiring! I'd love to see you put 4x 250W flexible 12V panels on your roof rack, that you can simply fold out over the length of the van. You would be able to charge this van for free with 75 miles from empty to full in only 4 days of sunlight (assuming about 5 sun hours daily). Just need a cheap 48V victron 20A charge controller, wire it to your current 12V battery, then use your inverter to charge the van at up to 1kW. Now that would be truly off-grid with unlimited range, or just a really cool option to have in emergencies.

@@GlynHudson May I ask you a question re charging connectors? I understand from one of your previous vlogs that you have used an adaptor cable to connect to a type 2 tethered cable charger using an adaptor lead. Is that lead as simple as a cable with type 1 plug on one end & type 2 socket on the other? Am asking because if it is, am pondering whether it would be cheaper and simpler in use to replace the type 1 socket on my 24kw Leaf with a type 2.

@@islaws4589 it's possible to charge frrom a tethered type-2 charger using the standard type-1 to type-2 cable that was originally provided with the van, I just needed to cut about 5mm-10mm off the end of the type-2 end of the cable to allow it to mate with a tethered type-2, see this video explination, the cut down cable still works fine in normal type-2 sockets, it just won't lock into place which is an advantage IMO since they often get stuck! : kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3KuqIKamd6kpNU

There was a video out once of a guy with an electric car. It was set up to charge at an electric station or at home with a diffrent connection like you have. The electric station charging was done from an outside port like a gas inlet on a regular car and the home charging port was on the inside of the car. He figured out it you take the electric station hook up and attach the house hoop up to it and plug it to the house port on the inside, the car would SELF charge while driving. At the time of the video, he had gone 3 days WITHOUT having to use either external charging powers. The only issue was, you had the electric cord coming through one of the window's from the outside charging port.

Hi guys really enjoyed the new van tour - I love the concept of small van touring (see Life Is Too Short channel #lifeistooshort ) and also EV camping. I recently did my first camper car adventure in my little 94ah BMW i3, proving that it is possible to get a full sized single mattress in the back and sleep comfortably... my question is regarding powering the van when stationary. I like you, left the van on all night while sleeping allowing me to remain cool with no condensation, but ran into the issue of external lights remaining on, making stealth and visibility an issue. I did fiddle with the lights which have several settings, but couldn't find a way of turning them off altogether.... I would be interested in how l might be able to install a mod like yours with a switch but not sure where to begin? Keep it up guys you're right at the sharp end of this movement and an inspiration to all us EV enthusiasts and adventurers

Firstly - thank you for your videos. I've been binging your content this week, as I'm picking up my very own e-NV200 later this week. I love the mix of van life, family life and EV-specific challenges and perks. I've started planning my electrical system to utilise the large built-in battery and wondered whether you have any updates on how your battery and alternator have held up being put under load as both the starter battery and a leisure battery?
@GlynHudson

Thanks for the kind comment. That's great to hear! Since making this video we've not changed anything about the electrical setup, and we've used the van a lot. We usually spend about 50 days per year living in the van, spread over 2 or 3 long trips. So the cooker has had a lot of use, and it's been holding up fine. The 700W induction hob is not a big load for the 1700W DC-DC converter. This setup works well for us, but if you don't enjoy wiring up electrics a simple solution is to use something like an EcoFlow portable battery, this ha the advantage of being plug and play solution which can also be removed from the van and used elsewhere in-between trips.

Could you use the induction hob from the inverter through the cigarette adapter rather than permanent wiring?
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson 3 жыл бұрын
No, the cigarette lighter has a maximum limit of 120W, the induction hob requires about 800W. The inverter must be wired directly to the 12V battery with thick cables. I've got a video I posted a while back about the inverter and induction hob setup. The choice of induction hob is important

Thank you so much for this video. Very inspiring and so very well put together by both of you. If I followed your example I think I would always be concerned I think about the life of the traction battery. Is Nissan helpful in either repair or replacement of a spent battery? Or if the battery failed totally would replacement be terribly expensive?

The van comes with a 100,000 miles 8yr bettery warranty. There are several Nissan Leafs which have the same battery which have now done over 200,000 miles on the original battery. When the time comes, replacing the battery is straightforward, there are several third party companies in the UK which offer battery replacements.

Hello ! I just discovered your channel, being in the process of moving from my ducato diesel van to an electric one. Possibly a NV200 or a Citroën traveller. I love the idea of "everything electric" but I am surprised that you can run an 800W induction cooking table from your 60Ah AGM. AGM can normally not deliver more than 30% of their capacity, and 800W is 67A (not counting for conversion losses)... I would have guessed that the AGM would have then a very short cycle life. Does it really works with this small AGM battery ?

Hi Glyn, thanks for the great video! I have a question - when the induction hob is on and connected to the 12V battery, which is also connected to the DC-DC charger, is the charge pulled directly from the DC-DC charger? Or is the charge pulled from the battery, which is instantly replaced by the DC-DC converter? I'm asking because I'm considering an induction hob with a 1500W rating, which would draw around 125A from the battery. I've heard that high currents like this can cause sulfation and degrade the battery. So I need to know whether or not the battery will experience that high current draw or now. What do you think?

Absolutely love what you guys have done with this van! I've been thinking about my own conversion for a while and I'm determined not to settle for an ICE vehicle but I've got a couple of questions re: the 12V system that I'd really appreciate some info on if that's ok? 1. Is the 1.7kW rating of the DC to DC converter limited by the converter itself or the cable sizing going to/coming from it? 2. Could the DC to DC converter be upgraded to say 3kW without too much hassle? (haven't been able to find a 3kW, 400V - 12V, DC to DC converter anywhere online yet so I may have answered my own question there) Keep up the sustainable travel!
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. It's great to hear your considering an EV. The 1.7kW rating is the maximum output of the DC-DC converter. I would not recommend tapping into the 400V HV wiring to add a more powerful converter. 400V DC is very dangerous. If you need more power, I think you would be best to fit a separate leisure battery setup. You could get away with drawing more than 1.7kW for short periods, the extra power will be supplied by the 12V lead acid, but this is not recommended. What do you need more than 1.7kW for? A 800W induction hob is plenty powerful enough for cooking.
@EdChadwick1992
@EdChadwick1992 3 жыл бұрын
@@GlynHudson Thanks for the reply! Yeah I definitely don't plan on messing around with 400V DC. I'm sure there would be all sorts of issues around insurance and warranties etc. if I were to swap out the factory fitted DC to DC converter out myself anyway. 1.7kW probably is plenty, I just like my gadgets and creature comforts. Seems a bit silly to shell out for a separate leisure battery system when you're already sitting on top of more than 40kWh of energy... I suppose I should really learn to be more frugal since that's kind of the whole point of getting an EV in the first place and will no doubt be an essential part of van living. That said, I've emailed Peugeot and Citroen to see what the DC-DC converters / 12V systems on the e-Expert / e-Dispatch are rated at, probably much the same but we'll see. Thanks again for the reply :)
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson 3 жыл бұрын
You can run a lot from 1.7kW, I can't think of any gadgets which would need more than this! I would be interested to hear what Citroën / Vauxhall have to say. There is a major issue with these new vans for campervan use, apparently the DC-DC converter and heater / climate control shut down after 10min of the vehicle is in park which is obvious not ideal for a campervan m.facebook.com/groups/953334812082317/permalink/960714111344387/

@@GlynHudson maybe not one single gadget but if you're running multiple gadgets at once and cooking it can start to add up quite quickly. I'd like to at least have the option of cooking on a double induction hob but the smallest one I've managed to find so far is 2 x 800W, pretty sure it's the double version of the Vango induction hob you guys have. If either of them get back to me with a response I'll let you know :) I can't follow the link without joining the group but that definitely does not sound ideal haha! I suppose it would make sense, the battery packs are designed and built primarily for powering the traction motors and the manufacturers want to keep it that way for whatever reason... More research required!

@@EdChadwick1992 I think you would be fine using a double hob Vango Sizzle, I measured the peak power draw of each hob to be 730W, therefore both together would be 1.46kW. Interesting stuff indeed, you mentioned the 12 volt AGM battery, do you mean that is a nice powerful leisure battery in place of the tiny standard EV 12 volt battery….?
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson 2 жыл бұрын
The AGM battery has slightly more capacity and is more tolerant of deeper discharge, however the van doest need a large leisure battery since it has so much capacity stored in the main battery. Whenever I need to do something that requires a lot of power e.g Induction cooktop I turn the van on which charges the 12V from the main 400V battery. I have a low voltage cut-off to auto disconnect my loads if the 12V does run too low.
@thamesmud
@thamesmud Жыл бұрын
It must be painfully slow going any distance in 50 mile chunks. Not sure you can use the power from the traction battery without some serious mods. Power taken from the 12v system will leave you just as stranded as in an ice van.
@GlynHudson
@GlynHudson Жыл бұрын
We've not upgraded the battery to 40kWh to get over 100 miles of range. See our later videos. The 12V battey is charged via the main battery so running the induction hob is no problem when the van is switched on

Some advice on the lagun table mounting please. I see you've mounted it to or near the 'cup holder island thingy'; no idea what they're called. Apart from the chunk of wood and the lagun-supplied plastic wedge on the outside, did you mount it to the main face of the back of the island, or have you (bit tricky to see) added a plank of wood along from the island to the underneath of the driver's seat, and used part of that for mounting? I've prodded the rear face of my island and it seems pretty flimsy on the face of it (literally!) but maybe it's got a stable base behind the plastic? Also, there are no obvious clues as to how to get the island off to see what's underneath. I checked your blog for photos but didn't spot anything. Any advice would be great, thanks a bunch!

Hi! Awesome work with the camper, inspiring stuff. I'm considering buying an e-NV200 and making it a year-round second home / camper (live in Finland). I have a couple of ideas but not sure if they are worth pursuing. I didn't find answers on the forums, so super grateful if you could help 🙏🏻 1. Was thinking about fitting about 500W of solar panels on the roof, then fitting a total of 200 Ah of LFP batteries (maybe 100 Ah x2 connected in parallel) under the hood and use the solar to charge those. I saw you wrote on a forum that LFP batteries tend to overheat as the car's own DC-DC converter uses 100A to charge them. However, fitting 200 Ah of LFP would, according to the datasheets, tolerate continuous 100A and short time up to 150 A charging current, as the current per one cell is decreased significantly (compared to lower Ah batteries). What do you think? 2. I would like to use the solar to somehow charge the HV battery, as 500W is otherwise too much for only the leisure systems. Capturing all possible solar energy in the HV battery would also give me more freedom to travel in wilderness where grid is not available. Would it be stupid to use a 2-3 kW inverter (installed under the hood) connected to the 12V LFP battery to charge the HV battery using a regular 6A (1,4 kW) mobile connector? There would be some losses (maybe 20 % total ??) and the charging would be intermittent as the 2-3 kWh LFP battery would drain every 2-3 hours and reach the low voltage cut off. Then after it getting charged for some time from the solar and reaching higher voltage, the inverter would power on again and HV charging would continue. My idea here is, that I would like to capture all the possible solar energy to the HV battery, then use that for either driving or heating later on. Do you see any drawbacks or straight no-no's here? Thanks a lot in advance if you happen to have time to answer.

Found these videos very inspiring - thank you! As you are probably aware, the E-NV200 is due to be discontinued by the end of this year, replaced by a new van called the Townstar. There are also a whole raft of other small vans coming on. We have been weighing up the Toyota Proace City, which comes also in a long wheelbase version, for use as a camper. I read your comment below saying that in some of them, the converter and aircon automatically switch off after 10 mins… Do you know where I can find more info on this, or any possible solutions out there? It would be a major drawback for camper use! (Not really an FB’er, so can’t follow the link).

I don't have any hands-on experience with the newer vans, unfortunately things like being able to run the heating / A/C overnight and the rating of the DC-DC converter is not something which is mentioned on a spec sheet! I think the only way is to get a van on a long weekend test drive / hire / short term lease, to be able to fully experience it. Let me know how you get on

EV's solve one environmental problem (kinda, depends on how the electricity is generated) by creating another one. 'sustainable' is absolutely the *wrong* word to use when trying to sell the benefits of EV.
