I recently converted A machine to a hand crank. I solved the light problem by using a magnetic grill light. It works well.

It's just like mine came a couple different ways. Mine came Treddle you can get hand crank if you want it or electric

The "mystery attachment" is part of a Tuck marker like you see being used in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaq6mYmGnZd9gs0 There are a few videos on youtube once you know what to look for. Singer had a few variations on these over the years but they all worked essentially the same way. This part often comes apart from the rest of the attachment and, if you can find the rest of it, they go back together very easily - that is, after you know how it's supposed to look when fully assembled. They were pretty much always in the sets of "standard attachments" and given the popularity of tucks and pintucks in fashion (even today they're pretty common) they are a really handy attachment once you know how to use them.
