When I see something like this in one of the oil rich countries, I just want to cry. They "get it" and realize that we need to be moving to a sustainable energy system and doing what is right for the ecology. Not like the idiots in office here now who want to drill and burn their way through as much fossil fuel as they can. I'm trying to do my little part. My solar panels are now generating slightly more than I use and my Tesla Powerwall is in the pipeline to be installed in a month or so. When that happens, I will be 98% electricity self-sufficient. I'm not one of privileged rich so I have to stage things as my meager budget allows. In the long run it will be cheaper than continuing to use electricity from our local coal fired plant.

These are great ideas... but you need to adopt vertical growing for your food. It takes 1/4th as much land space and it's very economical. There is no need for soil or pesticides/herbicides if you combine the Kratke/hydroponic/vertical systems together. It also needs very little attention or maintenance from planting to harvest. All I do is add liquid fertilizer twice a year to my automatic watering system. I grow enough food in 2 huge greenhouses using this method to feed my family, friends, neighborhood and sell vegetables and microgreens to high end restaurants. Also the cost-to-production ratio is the best I've ever seen in ANY farming operation.

Brilliant video. Two questions. Most of the solar panels are installed flat, did the mention if this affected their efficiency? Also, what about an interview with the UK government asking them what it is we are doing to construct such living areas? Many thanks
@felixstockstock88927 жыл бұрын
Mark Taber Dubai is really close to the equator that means the sun is usually in a very steep angle towards the solar panels. In europe for example the sun shines from a much lower angle and thats why we tilt the solar panels towards the sun.
@SnakeyUk087 жыл бұрын
Good question Mark and a good answer Felix :)
@fullychargedshow7 жыл бұрын
The reason the solar panels are flat is because Dubai is much nearer the equator than in Northern or Southern hemisphere countries. In mid summer the sun travels directly overhead and the variance between summer and winter is negligible. And yes, an interview with the UK govt on this topic would be great.
@henrytudor85376 жыл бұрын
Mark Taber we dont need it in the UK. It has most of it by default. Not much sun, lush green landscape that dubai cant ever dream to have. Nd best? 4 seasons.

@fullychargedshow3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'm sure you can be more bitter, cynical and dismissive than that, you are barely trying. I'll try and help you. They could have spent the money on a nuclear weapons production facility, or a coal burning power plant. But they had to be a bunch of eco twats and build a city that generates more power than it uses and has a minimal impact in it's day to day running. What hopeless losers. Burn coal! Burn gas! Drive a massive diesel pick up and watch small kids cough in your rear view mirror like a real man. Eco twats making an effort to create slightly better living conditions and systems. What losers Real men burn coal.

@@fullychargedshow It's just sad that the only place willing to build an ultra sustainable community like this would be in the UAE where almost 100% of the local economy and probably a majority of the funding for this project came from oil companies and petroleum production. It's as if the only reason this community is able to exist is because of the oil industry. I do think it is a step in the right direction and obviously an interesting real world application of sustainable technology and design. It's just hard for me to see past the larger geographical/economic context.

Another good one Robert. I'm surprised at the number of negative comments on this video. I think people should keep in the back of their minds we've grown used to squandering incredibly energy dense fuels like oil, coal and gas, using them to power horribly inefficient systems. Any move away from reliance on these sources is bound to involve great effort and sacrifices. The UK has more than our fair share of above-ground car parks and I'm amazed these aren't covered in solar PV. We just don't seem to 'get it'. As for the comments about slave labour, any of us Americans or Europeans would do well to check their history books first since, ironically, the industrial revolution was pretty much built on it, not to mention explaining why that thing you bought online was surprisingly cheap.
@drtoboggan74695 жыл бұрын
Natural gas is actually a wonderful form of energy because of its properties. The amount of energy we get compared to what comes out is better than any other source besides nuclear. Including solar and wind of which accounts for about 4% of our needs total with all we've put in. And renewables cant be throttled or stored. That's why Germany's paying other countries to take and use theirs. It's not as easy as jumping to this because the way we use it.

Would it surprise you that the thing you described resembles only a tiny fraction of what Dubai really is? Of course there are people who splurge large sums on said gold plated cars but these are a few, and they certainly should be able to do that without anyone judging them as it is their money. Apart from that, Dubai is a place where normal professionals live too and it has a variety of communities to fit one's desires.

These community cities will probably be very desirable where everyone's participation will sustain the opperation of the city. However, to be fair there must be a place in the society for those of us who do not wish to live in a city or so close to so many other people in an artificial environment, though, beautiful in an artificial way. At least as long as the natural environment can sustain the people wanting to live in a natural setting, I think we should take advantage of the opportunity to do so with using all the abilities we have to impact the environment as little as possible in a negative way.
