This is the second in my series of all the boxes I can break instead of six cards from Upper Deck The Cup. Here is a hobby box of 1999-00 Upper Deck SP Authentic Hockey.

Love that you chase the big names from these older products. I'm more of a singles buyer but love the excitement of opening packs. Opened a lot of the products you showcase when I was more active in the hobby. Your channel is my favorite of all sports card themed channels and has gotten me back into the hobby. Recently went ahead and purchased an Ultimate Gordie howe auto, a grail card for me.

We are lucky to have Fulton in our hockey card community ! Love the Bure ! I also own the card ! I bought it x10 years ago along with the Sergei Fedorov SOTT auto which is actually a rare cards because he hasn’t signed for UD in the last 20 yrs ! I also LOVE the Habs booklet ! What I card! As a Habs collector myself I think this is an amazing card! If this card was from a UD brand product (such as SPA) it would be worth thousands of $$! Leaf makes those cards somewhat more affordable! Great video!

That was great! I opened a ton of this before and never hit a gold auto. And a Bure too that was definitely a great box. Funny how times have changed though. I remember thinking how great it was when they started numbering cards and how 2 thousand was low. Now I see people thinking 500 or even 300 is high. That booklet is absolutely gorgeous. So true. You know, I'm so leery of numbering gimmickry given the amount of products, parallels, and subsets. I'm probably the one guy who doesn't even buy that a 1/1 is necessarily low numbering. Some products have thousands of 1/1. If there are over 1,000 1/1 in a product, how is that low numbering? Some products guarantee a 1/1 in every case, and others in every box. Add all the cards up across all products and parallels and they are certainly more than these #/2,000 cards.

Great pull with the Bure and obviously the gold SOTT is a tough pull. I opened a box somewhere around 2006 for about $30 USD and hit the Stefan SOTT AND an Orr gold SOTT /25! Imagine opening that box at release when even the Stefan was a big card. Still have the Orr, and it won’t leave my collection! Normal SOTT were 1:box, so any of the other autos (gold SOTT, buyback, etc.) were additional hits. #Dryden

I gotta say, even though the stakes of opening the cup is pretty thrilling, watching someone spend 1500$ to get an rpa of someone who won’t spend more than a year with league isn’t exactly the best content. I really appreciate you going out of your way to show boxes that don’t really get opened anymore. Love these cards, they really are remnants of a different age lol. And as a Habs fan that booklet has got to be one of the coolest cards I’ve seen in a while, especially for the price you got it at! Congrats on that amazing card, and Happy Holidays! #dryden

Nice Orr hit and the Bure on the card auto with hand written numbering is nice. I saw that with some breakers they like opening the leaf story but books so I stay away from those ones even though the bide seemed lower #dryden

I've opened so much of these boxes back in 2015/2016 with the hope of scoring Richard or any other big name. No luck. They're obviously short printed. At least we got Yzerman and Bure (Brett Hull is a redemption unfortunately, so are Cujo buybacks apparently). However, oddly enough, our best box contained no Sign of the Times, but it had both Bobby Hull Piece of History and a Jeremy Roenick buyback in it. Useless to say, we were happy pandas that night. Anyway, Bure and a gold auto is a win win situation. Congratulations for your early Christmas present!

Great intel. Incidentally, I think the only redemption in 2003-04 Pacific Exhibit is the Brett Hull/Bobby Hull auto-jersey. The reason I was vaguely hopeful is, when I realized it was gold #/25, that counterfeited the notion of the big boys being short prints. At that point, every gold card on the checklist was born equally. Plus, I didn't know whether every card had a gold, even though it was pretty likely. I did know Gretzky and Richard had one.

@@Fultoncards Absolutely. Whenever you hit a gold it could literally be anybody. Got Lanny McDonald Level 2 in my first 99-00 Retro box. At first glance I was a bit disappointed, but after a few seconds I told myself "no, actually that's a rare bird". Otherwise, it's funny you mention the 03-04 Pacific Exhibit set because the only box we've ever opened contained, guess what? The expired Hull redemption. It's a shame since we wanted this card to frame it and give it to our father as a Christmas gift. Should have done our research.

Believe it or not I hit the gretzky auto in this product way back in the day and still have it !! I was tempted to sell it when covid hit and prices went through the roof but I held my ground so happy I did because it would be really tuff to find another one ! #dryden

Sticker autos are so weird to me. I saw someone pull a Gordie Howe out of a recent set and was like.. man.. this is so weird. The dudes been dead for a while now... dunno what to think about that.

But, that's the single greatest benefit of sticker autos, beyond ensuring unlicensed companies can compete, and reduce prices across the board. Sticker autos guarantee that legends can still appear in future products, after they pass. I've been predicting this for years. A great example is 2020-21 SP Signature Legends. My favourite card in the entire set is the Gordie Howe All-Time Future Watch Gold Parallel Auto #/25. His base All-Time Future Watch is a non-auto #/199. The gold is a product hit. Deceased legends like Hull, Lafleur, Bossy, Hawerchuk, and Gillies all have autos in the set. If there were no stickers, they would never have Future Watches. Like, this Connor Bedard can appear in a future product as a rare Chicago dual auto with Bobby Hull, or even Bobby Orr after he passes. What's far less rational is 2021-22 UD The Cup is a $1,000 product and Zegras' RPA is a sticker auto. Why buy that $1,000 box with a sticker auto RC when he might hard-sign tribute RCs on new technology for the next 60 years?

@@Fultoncards Yeah I don't really know if my feelings felt positive or negative about it to be honest? I just know that I feel "something" but can't really put my finger on it. But I think it would be really interesting to know just how many sticker autos the companies are holding onto. I guess the only thing that feels "unfair" here would be, for sake of argument, that Upper Deck has 1,000 Gordie Howe autographs in the vaults. And in every set they release #/5 Gordie Howe cards. I would imagine a couple of things: 1) On a personal level I don't care about "artificial scarcity" because it's the whole point of collecting inserts and was and will always will be an integral part of collecting. But I do imagine that knowing the stock would matter. In the instances when a specific card being marked #5, it would be nice to know the full number of stock remaining. #/5 being the run of the individual card then #/1000 of the full run of Howe signatures. 2) Knowing when Howes signature is running dry, I would imagine, affects the overall price of Howe cards. Also, maybe understanding the quality of the signatures. I also would figure that better clearer signatures at the beginning of his signing would be more valuable that his messier signatures nearing the end of the sticker roll. Does Upper Deck take signature quality as a tangible qualifier when deciding what cards get which sticker? 3) Do our feelings about sticker autos change depending on the way the player died? So like natural causes / old age vs tragedy like with Kobe Bryant? I know it's a long post.. LOL. But yeah.. ton's of feelings and questions about it in general.

Trust me, we want UD and Leaf to have over 1,000 Howe sticker autos in the vault and only number cards to #/5 moving forward. Why? Collectors and newer generations will always pay a premium for the latest boxes, and they want to know that legend autos can appear in not only new releases but new product. Hitting now is a huge event, regardless of the value of the auto. We don't want to know how many autos exist. It is immaterial. We don't know how many years McDavid will be alive. He can sign for the next five years or next 60 years. He can sign 100 autos per year across products or 100,000. That is up to UD, McDavid, and fate. Numbering is a gimmick and always has been. If Lafleur signed only five sticker autos for a particular future product, does that mean it is scarce? Lafleur's auto is one of the most common autos in the hobby. It doesn't matter whether 20 more exist or 20,000. Collectors will want an auto if it is in a product they like, or aligns with what they collect. And the newer the better. Baselines are completely perception. I hit the '97 Signatures Auto of Lafleur in 2020-21 SP Signature Legends. It is one of my favorite autos because it is in a Nordiques jersey, a Group A 1:1,122, and in one of my favorite products. It is rare for that product. My favorite part was simply hitting it. I will remember it forever. Do I care that Lafleur already has signed literally hundreds of thousand autos? No. Do all the other autos in existence affect the value of my auto? They do and don't. All those other autos mean there are substitutes. But they aren't really because I only collect 2020-21 SP Signature Legends not all those preexisting hard signed ones. Will the value tank in the future? In the future, future collectors will collect different things than my generation, and chase newer technology. Other Bedards and pandemics, spikes and troughs, will come and go. What drives the market isn't just scarcity, player performance, team market, or the appeal of the cards. It is anticipating what people will want next, and how saturated the market is saturated with money, people, and cards. If someone is buying a card, someone is selling it. So who is right? They both are, given their different tastes, value of a dollar, and timeframe. Card companies can print any numbering on any card. In fact, in UD Stature they printed "1/1" on 1,300 cards, most of which had no auto. In the future, they can print "1/1" on 50,000 cards. Do we know if they will? Of course not. But, we do know if we buy a product in 2030 and there is a Gordie Howe in it, we are partaking in something very special. Box breaks are primarily about the event of the break itself. This is why ppl join group breaks, and often immediately sell the cards they hit. They are dreaming of hitting a Gordie Howe in death. But opening a box is like going to a hockey game. We do not control the outcome. Often our team loses. Was the game worth the ticket, the drive, the dinner. Of course. It is what life is about. Mathematically, we won't hit the Howe. We enjoy the experience. If we do hit the Howe is it all about market value? No at all. It's about having hit the product hit. And, many of us prefer the product hits to be Howe and Lafleur, and not just Kaprizov, Seider, or the player of the moment. There will always be better hard-signed Howe autos on eBay. And whether or not this Howe auto is valued is not because of print runs: past, present, or future. It is simply about my own current tastes and anticipating other people's future tastes. And economics is mass psychology, not some numbering gimmickry across hundreds of products.
