Blue jays are without a doubt interesting birds. Their complex social systems, complex calls, and their amazing intelligence. Over the last 9 years, I've been observing the same group of jays in the woodlands behind my home very closely and have seen some interesting behaviors. Some of them I'm almost certain no one else has ever seen or at least has never reported or documented. I will share one interesting behavior to do with their courtship feeding in this video. Enjoy!

Gorgeous! I saw two Bluejays for the first time recently and it was incredible. When the male stood tall and seemed to pose for his lady, she would then do that adorable little low half wing-flap thing lol so cool to see 🐦

I love my blue jays!!! My clan is up to about 20!! I am pretty sure that my neighbors think I am nuts! The female I helped after she flew into a full suet cage and stunned herself perfectly imitate my whistle for them. I have Belle and Spike. They are my mated pair who seem to have a clutch of 5 every year. The black collar on Belle is very thick like a choker and the genetics and markings are amazing!

@@jim9930 I am lucky to live in a tiny village Western NY. There is a stand of trees that sits in the middle of two main roads that they just thrive in. I grew up with my parents who fed the birds. Never until I moved here had I seen a redbellied wood pecker. Tufted titmouse and chickadees in abundance. Being disabled by MS leaves me time to enjoy them. My cardinals are thriving as well. I always wait until they close up the feeders before I pick up for the night. Too many skunks and raccoons at night if I don't. Nature for my tiger cub scout helps alot. I can't say enough about my blue Jays to him.

It was nice to see Hermoso again. The rattled call of the female is very interesting! I will listen for that one. Does it travel very far like the squeaky-gate call? I will have to pay attention to make sure I hear the two versions of the squeaky-gate call. At 5:00+, the bird in the middle is making a "call" and bobbing up and down. What is this call, behavior? It almost sounds like crying at one point. ;-) I love your theory on the shivering behavior. When I have had the pleasure to feed parrots (I think they were all Amazons, one was at a man's business) and sit just below their eye level and feed them, they would do the shivering thing. I always thought of it being a happy dance too! They were all birds that seemed to be rather neglected, few or no toys, etc. The one at the business stayed there all the time, alone at night. :-( Oh! I think their happy dance could also be, just as with humans and their teenagers, they are joyous that the children are almost out of the house! LOL Just kidding? As you can see, no migraine since the "comment" is so long. I LOVE your iPhone case! I have a flip phone. Maybe I can get the "Happy" mug. I like the TweeatHearts mug. Oh! This is one of my favorite videos. Thank you so much for all you share...and putting up with my short-story comments. ;-)

I had placed a crow decoy in my feeder before any birds appeared to try to get some crows to my feeder. A family of Jays showed up about 4 days ago, and i noticed that they kept their distance from the decoy and eyed it very suspiciously when they came around. This morning they knocked that decoy right out of the feeder! Silly Jays!

This is another great blue jay video! I have many who come to my yard for peanuts each and every morning. Their individual behaviours are so amazing. One, whom I've named Bravo (because he's so brave), comes throughout the day and perches right outside my office window (I work from home) so I'll see him; when he senses movement, he leaps to the top of the garage so he'll be a safe enough distance away when I open the back door to toss him a peanut. He's the only one who doesn't fly away to the nearby tree when I open the door. I really love this bird! There is also a pair that are inseparable, and they've been this way since about June. I wonder if they're mother and 'baby', because in the summer there was one blue jay mother with three demanding juveniles. Two of these three seem to have gained independence, while the third (I believe) still follows the mother around like a shadow. It's interesting to watch their relationship. The mother always takes her peanut from the tray first, followed by the younger one, who immediately flies in whatever direction she did -- I've never seen it go on its own to cache a peanut. Anyway, blue jays are amazing birds and I really love your videos :)

Lesley you are doing such wonderful work educating people about bluejays. I have learned so much from you! One observance I wanted to share is sometimes Jays will be at my bird feeders and they will give out a call that will scare all the other birds away (like a warning a predator is coming) then they come down and eat! Tricky! ;D When you said "have a birdiful day!" I thought you said "vertical"! I laughed because sometimes when people ask me how I'm doing I'll say, "well, I'm still vertical!" Hope you sell lots of t-shirts! I love the three I got! I hope you come out with more designs!

Hi Lesley. I absolutely love your videos. So relaxing and beautiful. I was just curious as to how you have gotten birds to eat from your hand. I have stood out by my feeders for hours trying to get birds interested in hand feeding, but my white breasted nuthatch and black capped chickadee will only eat from a feeder right next to me; not from my hands. Any tips to get them to eat from my hands? Also, I just filled out the form to be notified when that birds make me happy shirt becomes available again (hopefully soon, I missed all three times that they were out). Keep up the great work. Much love, from Illinois.

I went online this morning to find the meaning or intent behind what you’ve termed tail twitching (if I’m recalling correctly, maybe switching?) I have a small yard in a noisy suburban area, but I have a faithful group of blue jays always ready for peanuts. Several times now I’ve witnessed the twitching, but the jay is perched alone on the shepherd hook holding the feeder of nuts. I would have thought it part of getting the attention of a potential mate, but you’ve seen it with a mated couple so there goes that theory!

I live in a rural area of northwestern Washington state. A few years back, I had pair of Stellar Jays that had taken of residence near my home. I'm more of a dog guy than a cat person ( and of the opinion that any dog under 50lbs is a cat 🤣 ). At the time, we had two dogs (a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a black Lab) but also two cats, a long-haired black female and an orange Manx male, both preferring to live outdoors most of the year, only asking to come in when the weather got cold. So one early summer morning, I'm having my coffee on the front deck when Jet (the black female) c0mes running onto the deck while being dive-bombed by both Stellar Jays. I can see she has something in her mouth and I give her tap to the top of her head and out falls a very young Stellar Jay, she had managed to steal from their nest. Squawking and disheveled, but seemingly not broken, I put Jet in the house and gently scooped it up and not knowing really what exactly to do, walked off into the surrounding woods in the general direction of their assumed but unknown nest location, accompanied but the distraught parents.not knowing where their nest was exactly, all could do was place the baby in the wide crotchet Y of a tree, so it wasn't on the forest floor, and hope for the best. I then returned to my coffee, leaving Jet inside and the woods became quiet for the next while. A few hours later, with no sign of the Jays, I had no choice but to let Jet back out and I returned to my work studio next to the house, leaving my door open on such a beautiful day. After a couple more uneventful hours passed, I suddenly heard the Jays squawking again and came outside just at the moment Jet was crunching down on the body of the baby, which she immediately dropped and ran under deck to escape the attacking parents. The babe was just barely alive and broken beyond repair. I thought about ending it's misery but couldn't bring myself to do it, so I shoveled it up and accompanied by the circling (but not swooping to attack me) parents, I went a little deeper into the wood and placed it at the foot of a tree in soft surrounding grass and returned to the house. I could hear the almost wailing cries of the pair off in the woods, as they mourned their dying offspring. The pair remained in the area another season or two (or I believe it must of been the same pair). On several occasions they would light upon the fence around my deck while I had my coffee and "talk" to me in quiet tones and I even found what appeared to be seed and even a trinket offering on my deck table. And even more often I would hear their squawking as they harangued Jet as she dove under the deck to escape their remembered wrath. A couple years later they were gone and my local bird calls returned to the ubiquitous crows and ravens, that seem to know a like me each morning when I make my "commute" across the deck and through the garden to my studio. Additionally we have various distinctly individual barn owl hoots and the cries of the local eagles. And of course, the annoyed caterwauling of the anti-social Great Blue Herons, that like nothing that walks on two legs.

Hi Lesley! I've seen the male and female shivering (similar to babies and fledgings wanting to be fed but different). I think it shows they're happy - could be for various reasons such as they're feeling feisty, they're glad the babies are about ready to leave the nest, they feel good, etc. I saw and heard the rattle call with females - too funny - sounds as if they're burping - :) In fact I was once blamed for it - the person did not see the female Blue Jay doing it. -😁 - Love your mom's "vertical" saying 👍 Stephanie

Idk if it was this video or another one of your videos, you mention how Jay's do not like other encroaching on their space, yet in videos and in my own yard (I have a new jay family that has moved in.)I see them with others almost like a community. Why is that? Are the other birds older offspring? The Jay's in my yard have nested in a juniper that is over grown to the point I can not see the nest but I know it's there because they come and go all day everyday if I didn't know better I would think there is more than o e nest because of the amount of Jay's that I sometimes see in that tree. When a squirrel is around they come together to push it out of the area.

I was reviewing the footage this morning, and found out that as territorial as they are, 6 of them were all sharing the same feeder. And even after watching your video on how to identify males vs females, I still can't tell them apart. But I have a video of all 6 sitting at the bird box, pecking at their feet. Aggressively, at that. Why do blue Jays peck at their feet?

What if maybe late summer/fall was these two's anniversary and for that special reason it's the female that feeds him?

Hi Lesley, I just saw a blue jay doing this tail (and wing) shiver paired with a quiet song/sound in a tree right next to my house. The jay was with it's mate so I thought perhaps it was a courtship behavior. Your video is the only evidence I can find that touches on this behavior. Have you found any info? I would love some more details about this cool occurrence!

I've seen similar courtship behavior in the Western Jay as well. A male offering a berry to a female. To my surprise, the female aggressively chased off the would be suitor. I felt sorry for the poor guy.

I think of the blue jay as the tyrannosaurus rex of songbirds. I noticed a jay flying encumbered by something in its beak. As I approached closer, it dropped its load which I discovered was a robin hatchling. The jay had pecked a hole in the hatchlings head and eaten its brain. It had been carrying the hatchling with its beak embedded in the hatchling’s skull, obviously grasping some of the skull bones. I began tracking the jay’s movements. Within a couple of days, I watched as it plucked another hatchling from the robin nest it had led me to, leaving two hatchlings inside. Within three days, the nest was empty. I’ve never looked at jays quite the same after that.

I enjoy watching blue jays harass and attack intruders in their territories, especially cats, squirrels, hawks, and people. I showed my grandkids and their friends how the jays protected their territory. Unexpectedly, the kids soon increased their entertainment factor by taking turns walking into the jay’s territory and being dive bombed while their friends laughed and recorded the “attacks” on their phones. 🙄 I was surprised one day to hear a hawk call from a tree near me. I soon tracked the call to a jay. Looking around, I saw a hawk located a couple of trees over. Obviously, the jay had been sounding a warning to its fellows.

Hi Lesley! I have a question: would you know why the Jays make a high alarm call just before coming in to pick up a peanut off my deck? It's almost like they are saying, "Peanut! Peanut!" or "Mine! Mine!"
@LesleytheBirdNerd
@LesleytheBirdNerd 4 жыл бұрын
Its more than likely a communication with their mate regarding the peanuts or possibly to scare others away.

Well I know that baby birds shake their feathers when they want to be fed, so maybe the behavior has something to do with that.

I thought that was really funny too because sometimes when people will ask me how I'm doing I will say, "well, I'm still vertical!" But another commenter said Lesley said "birdiful day" so I went back and listened to it and I think that is what she said, haha! Either way is pretty cute, but "vertical" is darn funny! =D
