@@Gibson1976uk Stay in your lane, old man. Were I more cynical I'd point out your rank racism at celebrating a white woman singing about sex and relationships while railing on a Latina for singing about "people's private parts with no imagination". Lemme guess you're not really racist because Rita Moreno was great as that Puerto Rican spitfire in West Side Story, right? Sometimes you really get on my nerves… as that probably went over your head that song was pretty much the peak of Jane's lyrical profundity.

Been a hard couple of days. . Still get butterflies every single time I hear the intro to this beautiful track - instantly reminds me of the start of the All Saints runway show in New York Fashion Week A/W 1998. That drum beat, the bass, the cello….. . Backstage, at the curtain, the entrance to the catwalk, peeking out checking if anyone had turned up lol 😆 . Final check on every outfit, last second changes, crumpling collars, tucking in jumpers, rolling up trouser hems, smudging make up, tousling hair, trying hard not to panic and timing each model out to the beat of the drums and the baseline. . Instantly reminded me of my youth, how much I wanted to be in a band, sounding like this, looking like this - looking like I didn’t know how cool I looked, or cared if anyone gave a shit! . Terry Hall seemed to have this nonchalant look about him that no one else on the planet had. We learned years later why that was. . That bomber jacket with the diagonal exposed sleeve zip was first out! Classic 80s number that! . I’d woken up that morning with a terrible hangover, panicking, realised I needed some accessories for the show, hair gel and hair pins, jumped in a cab, headed up to Harlem. Had a panic attack in the back of the cab, first and last time ever! Ended up on the floor of the cab thinking I was having a fuckin heart attack! Managed to control my breathing, got up off the floor, stopped the cab, jumped out, grabbed a bottle of water - obviously totally dehydrated, for some reason! Found an Afro Caribbean hairdressing shop that had the hair gel and some kilt pins. Running around, realised I didn’t have a belt on, had forgotten to pack one, trousers were falling down! Headed back downtown, panicking about being late for the show, for some reason stopped off at Gucci and bought an elasticated belt. Must’ve been near Bryant Park or something as I definitely couldn’t afford it but knew I’d run out of time. Tried about 3 other shops, couldn’t find anything, thought at least I could use that on one of the models, last minute worries! Realised I’d been procrastinating, obviously petrified about doing this show - what if it was a complete disaster? . Dressed the models, lined them up, this came on, I was like ….. WOW! . Unbelievable! . Never heard such an incredible opening track on any runway show, everyone used to play disco shit, nobody played indie, ever - it really was something beautiful. . I wish I still had a copy of the video - played it for years after that, on a little TV that had a video cassette slot underneath the screen! “Can you hear them? They talk about us Telling lies Well, that's no surprise Can you see them? See right through them They have no shield No secrets to reveal Doesn't matter what they say In the jealous games people play Hey, hey, hey Our lips are sealed There's a weapon That we must use In our defense Silence When you look at them Look right through them That's when they'll disappear That's when we'll be feared” The words seemed very poignant to me at that time. RIP Terry Hall you were a fine human being XXXXXXX
