That was very enlightening especially coming from a guy who is still in training I would give you an A++ and the biggest reason why is your the first person who would back me up about putting seals on the valve guide on the Exhaust valve I have never built a Flathead V8 but I am doing a 8N Ford tractor with a flat head . I enjoyed listening to you , your a wise man I can’t even remember where I parked my truck but you can really retain a lot of valuable information and it’s very cool that you share it so guys like me can pretend to be smart too😀

Holy cow that brings me back to my first midget ride was a V8-60 which were raced on menthol and 25% nitro, it would run with the Offy’s of the day, this was 1969 while I was still in high school. You really had to know how to make them run cool and fast.

Excellent show and tell. I’d liked to have seen the shims too just to see one. The offset keepers were neat. Good explanation. I replayed it from 13:20 a couple times to make sure I got it straight.

I hope to start my 1st flathead restoration in the next few months. This video's the most informative on the subject by far. Loads of great tips to help the uninformed 'modern mechanic' learn some unique old school principles. I've saved this vid as I'm sure I'll refer to it many times in the future.

You show the stainless steel valves which clearly provide increased efficiency over standard, but are you aware of any valves available that are sodium filled to further aid heat dispersion through the guide/block?
@MrDanielSoliz
@MrDanielSoliz 3 жыл бұрын
@@chalkster4723 there are sodium valves that could possibly be used but you would have to bore out the guides to 3/8 stem.

Thanks Danny! I haven't pulled any of my flatheads apart yet. Someday I'll get into one. Can't wait to see more flathead content! Later this winter I'm swapping out the tin-side 60 hp out of my '37 for a '48 59AB, but its already a runner so no machining required.

btw, the stereo microphone on your camera works really good Danny! I got a little disorientated when I heard a motorcycle pass my window. There's six inches of snow on the ground outside. Then I realized it was your video, lol.

Very interesting tricks I never new. Back in the day we ran what I thought was a pretty hot flathead. Like 1/4" overbore. Yes, 3 7/16" bore. Using a second gear from the V8-60 trans gave it lots of rpms on a circle track that flatheads were never known for. So I have a question on the SS sbc valves. What size is the intake you are using? We used intake valves from an inline Chrysler 6 engine. I don't remember how much bigger they were, but they were bigger than stock Ford. We did, of course, run solid valve guides, but I don't think we used the seals on either intake or exhaust. But that was so long ago, my memory isn't keeping up. Love the videos.

Stock builds I use 1.5” intake and exhaust and on performance builds I use 1.6” intake and 1.5” exhaust.👍

Nice job Danny! Probably too late now, but would have liked to have seen inside the ports with your machined guide vs the unmodified one. I bet it looks awesome! Will we get to hear it on the run stand someday? Actually, more run stand videos of any of your builds would be great!

So in order to taper the top of the valve guide and knurl the outside surface they must not be hardened material on a guide??? When everyone says a "Chevy valve" what engine is it out of for the correct stem length and diameter?

flathead engines are totally alien to what we're used to nowaday... what bends my brain is that the exhaust AND intake valves are on one side in the valley yet the exhaust manifolds are on the opposite side!! exhaust has to travel through the block, weave around the cylinders and water jackets ( if thats even a thing) and out the side... absolutely whacky lol this is why 1, ford was really the only one to mass produce the flathead v engine in any guise and 2, it only had 3 exhaust "ports".. really the block is the manifolds and the intake and exhausts are just a plenum... the only engine blocks with more functions are 2 stroke lol..

i see your caliper kung fu is pretty on point... lol what are your thoughts on caliper vs mic for engine building? i got lots of good calipers and a couple dial indicators but only one mic i trust (1"-2") and it usually is only good for bearing clearance.. not sure they're really needed for what i do.. mostly single cyl go kart minibike and racing lawn mower stuff a lot of briggs flatheads and always wanted to do a ford flathead but building a decent motor with one piston isn't cheap even if i can do machine work myself...
@MrDanielSoliz
@MrDanielSoliz 3 жыл бұрын
You can check almost everything these day with a good quality caliper but you still need a mike to do all the machining. I have an old Mitutoyo caliper that’s never wrong, I can set up my mikes and the caliper is alway right on.
@ianbuilds7712
@ianbuilds7712 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrDanielSoliz yea... i think the "problem" with the caliper is more of a human error thing.. like it's easier to influence your measurement with calipers compared to mic but if you have the feel for a certain one a good caliper will always put u well within tolerance of most any engine part

I'll start @ 4 deg advance and 22 total as a base line and tune from there. depends on the engine and what temp it's running and fuel.
